2 continued from page -1- Trout Unlimited has received a $94,919 grant to continue its commitment to protecting and enhancing regional waterways and the environment. The grant is part of the Water Resources Fund, a $10 million commitment from Duke Energy. TU is one of 14 organizations across North and South Carolina to collectively receive more than $1 million in the fifth grant announcement. The Water Resources Fund is a multi-year commitment that will leave a legacy of improved water quality, quantity and conservation in the Carolinas and neighboring regions. "We are grateful to Duke Energy for this generous support, which is invaluable to Trout Unlimited s sustained coldwater conservation efforts in the mountains of western North Carolina, said Andy Brown, Southern Appalachian stream restoration manager for Trout Unlimited. In 2017 we will undertake several major projects to improve coldwater habitat. TU will remove or replace ill-suited or poorly functioning culverts across three headwater streams, re-connecting 9 miles of aquatic habitat for eastern brook trout and other aquatic species and, in the process, eliminating a significant sediment source to these otherwise high quality waters. Additionally, Duke Energy's support will help TU leverage $338,000 from other partners to expand coldwater conservation to other sites in the region, not only this field season but into the future. Partners include the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, U.S. Forest Service, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation. Duke Energy is committed to protecting and restoring the rivers and waterways that are valuable resources for our communities and regional economy, said Cari Boyce, president of the Duke Energy Foundation. We look forward to our partnership with Trout Unlimited and the impact this grant will have in North Carolina. Investment decisions are carefully reviewed by the Water Resources Fund committee, an independent body that includes five environmental experts and two Duke Energy employees. Selected projects are chosen on several criteria, including whether the project is science-based and research-supported. Duke Energy anticipates two grant announcements per year over the course of the Water Resources Fund. Visit nccommunityfoundation.org for more information on how to apply and register for the session. The Duke Energy Foundation provides philanthropic support to address the needs of the communities where its customers live and work. 3 Click here for link to video. Want to honor Teddy Roosevelt s legacy? Here s how: Theodore Roosevelt was many things, but perhaps most of all he was a public lands champion. He used his authority as President to establish 150 national forests, 51 federal bird reserves, four national game preserves, five national parks and 18 national monuments on over 230 million acres of public land. Yeah, he liked public lands...and our country is greater for it. [SIGN THE PETITION TO PROTECT PUBLIC LANDS] We ve often found ourselves wondering what Theodore Roosevelt might think of today s conservation landscape and controversies over the management of America s public lands. No doubt things have changed since he occupied the oval office but many threats have stayed the same when it comes to public lands. The greed of a few to take the right of many, for example. l June
4 Please visit ncwildlife.org/fishing/trout for more information about trout regulations, stockings, and angling opportunities. Cherokee Graham Clay Swain Macon Haywood Jackson Brook, brown and rainbow trout require cold, clean water and are therefore generally restricted to mountain streams and lakes. Those mountain waters that support trout and are open to public fishing are designated as Public Mountain Trout Waters by the Wildlife Resources Commission and are man aged for public trout fishing. A significant amount of trout fishing oppor tunities in western North Carolina are located on private property. These landowners have generously allowed for public access for fish ing. Please respect their prop - erty. Your cooperation is needed to protect fishing opportunities for future generations. The Com mis sion conspicuously marks Public Mountain Trout Waters with regulation signs that indicate locations for public access. When anglers encounter posted against trespass signs along these designated sections on pri - vate lands, they should respect the property owner s rights and choose another location along that stream to fish. 7 The first Hook, Line, and Drinker Festival was a great success! The weather couldn t have been better and the attendance was very encouraging. Tuckaseigee Chapter took part with a booth of our own. Members were onhand to tell the public about the TU Mission and we even sold a few TU hats. (Green hats were most popular!) All of the members present expressed their enthusiasm for participating in the festival again next year with plans to make our presentation even better. For more information about the festival, please visit or call June
8 Our Three-Day Retreat Weekends offer a full schedule of activities that includes basic fly fishing instruction, medical education and groups that provide opportunities for support and connection with other women surviving cancer. October 13-17, 2017 for women with all types of cancer, Lake Logan Center, Canton, NC. Retreats begin on Friday afternoon and conclude on Sunday after lunch. The schedule includes group activities and fly fishing instruction. Most women who attend have never held a fly rod and many have never fished. Fly fishing instruction is simple and fun!! Fly fishing instructors and river guides are always present to teach and assist. All meals are included and volunteer staff are onsite for the entire weekend. While the retreat schedule has a variety of activities, we encourage women to participate at their own level. There is plenty of free time built into the schedule. All participants and volunteers will receive a detailed retreat schedule prior to the weekend. l Click here for more info. Click here for link to video. 11 Editor s Cast! he May meeting was the chapter s annual " T family picnic at East Laport Park. We had a great turn-out and the food was delicious. Kudos to director Lee Ewart for the hot dogs and burgers. They were great Lee and cooked to perfection! On Saturday, May 20, the chapter took part in the first Hook, Line, and Drinker Festival held at the Bridge Park in Sylva. The event, sponsored by the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, will become an annual affair. This year s weather couldn t have been better. Carolina Blue skies, temperatures in the high 80 s and nothing but a few white puffy clouds floating above the venue. Tuckaseigee Chapter had several large posters on easels inviting folks to join our chapter, describing our efforts with Trout In the Classroom, and promoting our support of Rivercourse Summer Youth camp at Lake Logan. We had brochures on-hand that explained our chapter s mission and included an application for membership featuring the special 1/2 price for new members. Additionally we had brochures for Trout In the Classroom. Forward Cast Tuck Chapter will next meet 6:30 PM June 6 th at the Fly Fishing Museum of the Southern Appalachians in Bryson City. Our program will involve a tour of the museum. The board will serve a hot dog supper at a cost of $5.00. TUCKASEIGEE CHAPTER A big thank-you goes out to Julie Spiro and the folks at the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce for putting on a great first event to capitalize on Jackson County as the NC Trout Capital. Tuck Chapter will look forward to participating in next year s festival in an even greater fashion. We have some ideas being formulated to help make this event a big fundraiser for the chapter. Our next big project will be the festival over in Bryson City. This will occur in October. We participated last year and plan to have an even better presence this year. We will be selling raffle tickets and continuing to put our mission in front of the public. Make plans to attend the June chapter meeting in Bryson City at the Fly Fishing Museum of the Southern Appalachians on June 6! l June
12 Tuckaseigee Chapter received a letter of appreciation from Friends of Panthertown for our donation to their fund drive to acquire a 16-acre tract of land near the Salt Rock entrance. We have been informed that an anonymous donor doubled our contribution amount. Construction has now begun on an expanded parking area at the Salt Rock entrance. There will be a celebration on June 3 at the Salt Rock trailhead. l June
13 A Casting Carolinas Report My New Years Resolution was to experience new adventures and come out of my comfort zone of sedentary sewing activities to engage in outdoor fun. Then came along an invitation to join a Casting Carolinas Retreat, a three-day adventure in the beautiful setting of Lake Logan. This program is designed to help guide women participants to successfully navigate the complicated terrain of cancer survivorship. A wonderful well-trained staff assisted the group in every step of the journey and treated us like queens. We learned all aspects of fly-fishing including the equipment needed, setting up our lines, and fly-tying. There were also sessions on nutrition, exercise, meditation and mindfulness, music and dance. The final day was to put into practice all that we had learned, and go out and catch fish. We each had a personal guide to assist. After missing several chances and worrying the fish to death, I believe one just surrendered by jumping up into the net. It was exciting to catch a beautiful 10-inch Rainbow Trout. The experience was one I ll never forget. I met some amazing women and made many new friends. I M TURNING IN MY KNITTING NEEDLES FOR A FLY-ROD. Thanks to the Tuckaseigee Chapter of TU for introducing me to this program.
