3 Wildlife Commission Opens Two New Boating Access Areas on Glenville lake CULLOWHEE, N.C. (April 11, 2014) The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission has opened two new boating access areas on Glenville Lake, also known as Thorpe Lake, in Jackson County. The Powerhouse Boating Access Area and the Pine Creek Boating Access Area both provide access to Glenville Lake, which is popular for its bass fishing. The Powerhouse Boating Access area, which is located 1371 Pine Creek Road, has a 15-foot boat ramp, a 100-foot floating boat dock and two handicapped-accessible parking spaces shared with the adjacent public fishing area. An additional eight graveled parking spaces are available for the general public. The Pine Creek Boating Access Area is located at 2799 Pine Creek Road, about 1 mile west of the Powerhouse BAA. It features two 15-foot boat ramps on either end of the access area. The southern end of Pine Creek BAA features a new 80-foot floating boat dock next to a new boat ramp. The northern end of the boating access area features a new 100-foot boat dock aligned with an existing boat ramp. Handicapped-accessible parking is available next to both boat ramps, and the area between the two ramps has been graveled to provide an open parking area for the general public. Duke Power will install vault toilets at both boating access areas this summer. Most Glenville anglers fish for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass, said Powell Wheeler, the Wildlife Commission s area fisheries biologist. Historically, there were walleye in the lake, but this population has dwindled in recent years. We are experimentally stocking fingerling walleye in Glenville to restore the walleye fishery, but it will likely be several years before we know if this effort is successful. Top photo of the Powerhouse Boating Access Area on Glenville Lake, located 1371 Pine Creek Road. Bottom photo of the Pine Creek Boating Access Area on Glenville Lake, located at 2799 Pine Creek Road. NCWRC Photos The Wildlife Commission paid for the construction of the access area through funding from motorboat registration receipts and from Sport Fish Restoration Program funds. For more information on boating in North Carolina, including the locations of more than 200 free, publicly accessible boating access areas, visit the Commission s online locater map. For more information on fishing in North Carolina, including where to fish, visit the fishing page on May 2014!!!!!!!!!!! Page 3

6 Editor s Cast For the April meeting we had as our speaker Mike LaVoie, Director of the Fisheries program for the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians. Mike informed the chapter of the efforts of his program on behalf of the anglers visiting Cherokee who are wanting a firstclass experience on the local waters. The program for the May meeting will be provided by Ben Davis, a biology teacher at Robbinsville High School. Ben approached the Tuck chapter last Fall asking for our help with the Trout in the Classroom project his class has been participating in for the past several years. Ben needed some trout eggs for the current year and asked if Tuck chapter could assist him with their procurement. Then chapter president Dick Sellers was able to obtain the needed eggs from the state hatchery and Ben met him in Sylva to pick them up. Forward Cast Tuck chapter will have for our June meeting will be our annual picnic at East Laport Park. members will bring a covered dish and the chapter will furnish burgers, dogs and beverages Photo credit: Fish Cherokee website Regular stocking of the streams is the responsibility of Cherokee Fisheries and Wildlife Management, which each year adds nearly 250,000 trout to an existing population of fish swimming in the crystal-clear mountain waters. That s the highest density of fish in stocked waters in the East. These supplemental stockings include rainbow, brook, and brown trout of various sizes ranging up to trophy size. Ben explained that we were the closest TU chapter to his school and as a result it would be more convenient to have us sponsor his class rather than out-of-state chapters he had used in the past. He had wanted brown trout eggs but Dick said only rainbows were available. At last month s meeting, Mike LaVoie indicated that the Cherokee Hatchery might be able to assist us next year with obtaining some brown trout eggs.l Above: Trout eggs the day of delivery.
