1 Tuck Tales! New Survey for All Members - Drive Diversity Forward A little more than five years ago, Trout Unlimited conducted a survey of female members seeking guidance on how we were serving them as members, engaging them as leaders and providing them opportunities to be active participants in our community at all levels of the organization. Since that time, and with significant effort from hundreds of volunteers across the country, TU's Women's Initiative has grown and so have the number of female members and female leaders. Now, we are launching a new survey for all members with three distinct goals: Highlight the history and success of the Women's Initiative, determine how broadly it is known and gauge if members feel that attitudes have changed for the better since it first started. Compare and analyze responses from the original survey to determine perceived and real changes in TU over the past five years. Continued on page -2- New Life Membership Join today as a Trout Unlimited Life Member and we'll send you your choice of two incredible Winston Boron III rods and a TU Life Member hat. You'll receive other great benefits too, like a lifetime subscription to Trout magazine, the TU calendar and the pleasure of knowing you've made a most meaningful commitment in support of the TU mission and vision, ensuring the future of the fisheries and the sport you love. Each of these rods is proudly inscribed with the words Trout Unlimited Life Member," and are available at the new life member price of $1,200. Installment options available. 5 Wildlife Commission Opens Hatchery- Supported Trout Waters April 2 RALEIGH, N.C. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will open approximately 1,000 miles of Hatchery- Supported Trout Waters in 25 western counties at 7 a.m. on April 2. The season will run through Feb. 28, While fishing on Hatchery-Supported Trout Waters, anglers can harvest a maximum of seven trout per day, with no minimum size limits or bait restrictions. To give trout anglers better opportunities to plan fishing trips in advance, the Commission posts stocking dates and locations for the entire stocking season by week, and posts daily updates at noon for all waters stocked that day. Information can be searched by county, by month, or both. Hatchery-Supported Trout Waters, marked by green-and-white signs, are stocked from March until August every year, depending on the individual stream. Many of these waters are stocked monthly, although some heavily fished waters are stocked more frequently. Commission personnel will stock nearly 916,000 trout in percent of which average 10 inches in length, with the other 4 percent exceeding 14 inches in length. Stocked trout are produced primarily at two mountain region fish hatcheries operated by the Commission and are distributed along hatchery-supported streams where public access for fishing is available. While Hatchery- Supported Trout Waters are open to public fishing, many of those miles are privately owned. Opportunities to fish on many of these hatchery-supported trout streams are only available through the support and generosity of landowners, said David Deaton, the Commission s Fish Production Supervisor. It s important for anglers to respect the property that they re fishing on and remember that landowners can take away access if they feel their property is being misused. Anglers can help prevent the loss of public access to fishing by: Respecting private property and landowners at all times; Removing all trash and litter from fishing and parking areas; Parking only in designated areas and leaving driveways open for traffic; Closing and/or locking gates after use; and, Reporting wildlife violations by calling For a complete list of all Hatchery-Supported Trout Waters, as well as trout maps and weekly stocking summaries on Hatchery-Supported Trout Waters, visit the Commission s trout fishing page. Weekly stocking information appears online for seven days, and updates are posted on Fridays after fish are stocked. For more information on fishing in public, inland waters, visit the Commission s website, or call the Division of Inland Fisheries, NCWRC Photo April

13 Pisgah Chapter to Again Offer Fly Fishing School April 23, 2016 The Pisgah Chapter of Trout Unlimited's Fly Fishing School encompasses all the basic functions of fly fishing and is designed to put the new angler on the stream with basic self-sufficiency. We draw on the experience and talents of over 100 chapter members to provide the very best instruction on a personal basis not possible in a commercial enterprise. Participants also receive a 60-page "Introduction to Fly Fishing" on CD. Casting The techniques for basic casts are taught, including the overhead cast, the side arm cast, and the roll cast. Additionally, such functions as mending line, proper retrieve, and avoiding tangles are taught. Line Management This segment covers all of the essential knots used in the assembly of the line system. You will learn how to modify your leader to maximize your effectiveness in casting and outsmarting that wiley trout. Equipment and Safety Whether you have already acquired your equipment, or are starting from scratch, this segment will provide useful tips on necessary equipment and optional items to make the experience more enjoyable. Also covered is wading safety. Stream Tactics, Entomology, and Fly Selection So you have the equipment and know how to cast and assemble your line; now how to select a fly and where to cast it? This segment emphasizes the correct fly for the time of the year and the type of stream on which you are fishing. It will show you the natural insects which are imitated with various flies, how to match your artificials to these and how to determine if the trout are dining on them. Code of Ethics We believe in a code of ethics and stream etiquette and will discuss these important aspects of fly fishing. Half Day on the Stream It is one thing to learn it, but quite another to actually use it. This half day on the stream with our experienced mentor anglers, arranged to fit your schedule, provides an opportunity to use the lessons taught and to acquire additional assistance where needed.
