The meetings will go back to the third Wednesday of the month. Please mark your calendars for this change of location. I m excited about our new location and thank Evergreen Bank for their support. Just got back from my annual trip to Gold Beach fishing with 5 Star Charters for two days of Lingcod and Rock cod. I host this annual event every spring with up to 11 friends and charter both 6 packs for my annual Ling Fling. This was our 7 th event and the winner this year was Rick Peterson with a 26 Lb. beauty. Rick not only won the pot, but will receive a $50.00 gift certificate, a 5 Star Charter hoodie, and a free Lingcod trip. Congratulations Rick. I found a new vacation house for our future trips. Eagle Bay is a 2 story home overlooking the Rogue Bay and mouth of the river. Nice place to stay while in town. It is owned by Chris Young who is a river guide. Have a safe 4 th of July. Time to get out and catch some fish and BBQ in the back yard. Cheers Cole Tidwell
VOLUME 27: ISSUE 7 PAGE 2 Lakers Fishing On June 15th, we had 6 boats with 17 people go to Hyatt lake for fishing. Bill Payne caught a beautiful 12 trout, while Rick Smith and John Blackledge each caught a 14 1/2 trout. The largest trout was 17 7/8 caught by Carl Cole while bank fishing with Mel Balcom near the dam. Brian Erb caught and released about 6 bass. The Jackpot for the largest trout was $ The weather was cool all day, never getting above 44 degrees. We did have a few light rain showers, and even a little snow while we did the BBQ. All in all, the fishing was slow, but everyone still seemed to have a good time. Our next trip will be at Klamath Lake on June 29th. On July 20th we will be going to Lake of the Woods, and on July 30th we will be going to Fish Lake. ODFW will have stocked over 18,000 trout in Fish Lake this year prior to July 30th. If you would like to go on one of our lake trips, please sign up at the general meeting or give me a call at See you at the lake! 3 VOLUME 27: ISSUE 7 PAGE 3 July 2016 Bottom Fishing in Southwest Oregon As you can tell from the images in this months Newsletter, bottom fishing on the Oregon coast has been very good. Ling cod to 28 lbs have been reported out of both Gold Beach and Brookings and limits of bottom, ground or rock fish have been the rule. Oregon Marine limits for 2016 are 2 Ling Cod (24 +) and 5 ground fish of which no more than 3 may be blues. These fish are some times generically referred to as rockcod, snapper, sea bass or rock fish. However Oregon anglers can actually catch 25 different varieties of ground fish off the Oregon coast. These include the popular Ling Cod, Blacks, Blues and lesser known Greenling (sea 10 +), Canary, Vermilion, and Tigers The retention of Yellow Eye, China, Copper and Quillback is prohibited at all times with Cabezon (16 +) available to anglers only July through December. You do NOT need any special tags to fish for bottom fish, however if you plan on catching halibut or salmon you will need the appropriate tag. In addition to ground fish mentioned above the all depth halibut fishing can be very good with fish up to 70 lbs being reported. The problems with halibut fishing are: trips are difficult to book, expensive and subject to the whims of the weather. Salmon fishing can be very good as well. IF the Albacore tuna (limit 25 fish) are within 20 miles they can provide some of the best fishing along the Oregon coast. In 2008 the Japanese current came within 15 miles and my daughter and I fished with 5 Star Charters and our boat caught 48 Albacore. Two recommendation for bottom fishing charters are: 5 Star Charters in Gold Beach with Mark Lottis ( ) and Andy Martin's Brooking Fishing in Brookings, OR ( ) Both charter companies also drop crab traps when Dungeness Crabs are available so you can often get a nice bonus of a couple of tasty crabs! Both run great operations and limit the number of angler to only 6 people. Definitely not cattle boats. Chuck Closterman
VOLUME 27: ISSUE 7 PAGE 4 It was Friday the 13th and just after 5AM as Steve Wiley and Peter Finch set off with Harold Hansen from a ramp upstream from Shady Cove. Three springers were brought into the boat. They were all wild fish and quickly returned to the river unharmed. Each fish was around 17 pounds. Members of the Middle Rogue Steelheaders wish to thank all the Guides listed on these pages for their generous participation in our club. Each guide offers us a guided trip for half price, which is then placed in our raffle at our general meetings. Guides listed on these 2 pages register annually with the state of Oregon to certify that they carry the minimum liability insurance required by law, they have current First Aid and CPR training and if required have a US Coast Guard (USCG) Operator License and/or Surety Bond.
VOLUME 27: ISSUE 7 PAGE 5 Please see our calendar at: For additional information on any of our events.
VOLUME 27: ISSUE 7 PAGE 6 Results of the 2016 Spring River Clean-Up On June 4 th 23 club members and one guest volunteer, cleaned up accumulated trash at many of the river access points along the Rogue River from Pierce Riffle to Hog Creek. Most of the areas were surprisingly clean, but a modest sized truck load of trash was collected and transported to the SOS transfer station in Grants Pass. A very nice BBQ lunch at Griffin Park followed the morning s work. My sincere thanks go to each of you who supplied your labor or equipment to make the day a success. Good job, everyone! We left the river a little better than we found it. As good looking a group as you can find anywhere! Kirk von Tagen & Cole Tidwell man the gril Why change the policy: AMENDMENT TO NEW MEMBER FISHING POLICY For a very long time the club has had a policy of offering every new member a club sponsored river or lake trip with seating prioritized ahead of any other club member. The club membership has grown to the point that this policy is slowing or blocking trips for existing members who have been working for the benefit of the club's goals and who have also been promised a trip. The new policy: As of June 1 st, 2016 the Middle Rogue Steelheaders will offer every new member who has taken part in an acceptable club activity a prioritized seat in a club sponsored river or lake fishing trip. Acceptable activities are those that already reward existing members such as Angler-Ed, C & R, and many others. Benefits: A more timely, prioritized reward for new members who are helping the club with its goals Improved timing of rewards for existing members who are helping the club with its goals A stronger emphasis on the concept of reward for work Board of Directors MRS

VOLUME 27: ISSUE 7 PAGE 9 Briggs Guide Service Free Fishing Weekend a Success! This year s ODF&W Free Fishing Weekend at Lake Selmac was family friendly and crowned a success by those attending. There were over 150 participants from grandmas to toddlers during the six-hour event. The activities this year included a Fishing Contest, 50/50 Raffle, Free Worms, Free Lunch, and Certificates for those catching their First Fish. As an added bonus this year, we were able to give out 53 used Angler Education rods to participants who did not have any fishing gear. Each participant who received a free pole to keep was so appreciative and said they would definitely be back to use them again. Congratulations to Cody Conlee for catching the longest bass at 16-3/4 inches and taking 1 st Place in the bass category. Steven Lee took 1 st Place for the longest trout at 12 inches and Caleb Fly (11 years old) took 1 st Place for the heaviest trout caught at 9 ounces. All winners were presented tackle boxes with various fishing gear included. An event such as this would not be possible without volunteers and community involvement, so please join us in thanking: ODF&W for designating the first weekend in June every year Free Fishing Weekend and the supplies they make available.
