From the Editor s Desk Newsletter of the Canberra Anglers Association April 2015 The CAA newsletter has evolved over the past decade or so in an attempt to be continually improving. We ve had constructive critique over these years and attempted to determine how much and how to change. Recent discussions over a red wine next to a camp fire prompts me to think it is time for further commentary from the broader club. Please newsletter@canberra-anglers.asn.au. JQ and I seek your comments on how we are doing. What changes would you like to see in the newsletter. For instance: do you like the two distinct styles adopted by the two co-editors ( variety is the spice of life versus why can t it look the same each month? ), do you want us to continue with the suppressing surnames, what other columns would you want added (it was suggested a Tip of the Month might be appreciated? Coming Events Next Meeting 8 Apr usual time of 7:30pm at Raiders Weston Club. Speaker to be confirmed. Next Events: 26 Mar March fly tying has been cancelled due to the number of instructors/attendees being unavailable. Normal service should be restored in April. (Many thanks to Peter K for spotting my error in months on the web and in the originally published newsletter.) Previous material remains on our fly tying page Apr Exploration Outing. The intentions for this trip have been in somewhat of a flux. Plans have now been confirmed. It will be undertaken by Lyall (Secretary) and comprise camping on the upper Murray River at Tom Groggin chasing trout mainly. 22 Apr Fly Tying. To be advised. Outing Reports Lyall s Report on Tuross Coastal Outing Feb The weather for the Coastal/Estuary outing to Tuross could not have been better. Warm days and cool night with light winds. The weekend was punctuated by excellent culinary creations by Chef Jason such as flat bread pizza for lunch and cordon bleu pancakes for breakfast! On the fishy side, we caught black bream, flat head and tailor. We could see whiting chasing our lures across the sand flats but they remained elusive over the weekend. As it happened, there was another fishing competition being run by a Canberra Greek cultural association which explained why Tuross Lakeside Tourist Park was booked out this year and 1

Newsletter of the Canberra Anglers Association April 2015 Greg W s Report on Goodradigbee Outing Feb Report is a very fancy production and is here. Greg is clearly in training to become an additional newsletter co-editor. The report starts: Five CAA members enjoyed a glorious weekend chasing the Mountain Trout on the Goodradigbee River in the Brindabella Valley over the weekend of 6-9 Mar 15 Bill B displaying his skills with the Rod with a nice Rainbow on the hook! (Editor: I should add that this photo was chosen by Greg to put in the newsletter taster not me! Also, I almost had another trout take the second fly while playing the first fish.) Special Places Tasmania Jason M has recently visited Tasmania and has compiled a report (and a talk to March monthly meeting). It starts The 150 year anniversary of brown trout seemed like a good reason to visit Tasmania, along with Christmas with the family. After years of the wife bringing home Tasmanian lures and fishing magazines, I relented, tied some flies, and ventured out.. It covers his journey from the NorthWest, to the Central Plateau and the Derwent River. Full report is in our Special Places 4
section. Newsletter of the Canberra Anglers Association April 2015 We welcome any contributions from members. Our current collection comprises: Jason M's report on Stoford, on the River Wylye in the UK Lyall's report on chasing mahseer on fly in Thailand Bill's report on his time on Lord Howe Island Some info and pointers from Randy about his trips to Argentina Scottish Highlands Salmon Great Gillies and Good Luck. Lyall having good luck near Inverness River Wharfe - Yorkshire Dales Bill's trip Western Ireland from Lyall South Pacific paradise of Kiritimati (aka the other Christmas Island) from the jet setting Lyall Tasmania A family trip by Jason M around the apple isle including dropping in to the Salmon Ponds and Museum of Trout Fishing Mudeye Madness Jason Q wasn t available to get to the Goodradigbee (re-wiring his van sounds a likely story) but has provided a few photos of his activities during workbreaks. Yep, they re pretty thick at the moment 5

Newsletter of the Canberra Anglers Association April 2015 CAA Fly and Lure Workshop and Barra Success Jason M ran lure building workshop s before our CAA meetings for three months in late This photo is proof that Jason s handmade Magnum bibbed lures really work on this albino Barramundi in Far North Queensland. Nathan s Spectacular Cod Fly, tied flame thrower style, also hooked up on a huge barra which headed for Lord Howe Island and broke off before I could get the photo. Fantastic fun with CAA lures and flies: Lyall 7
CRFA News Newsletter of the Canberra Anglers Association April 2015 Still working on resolution on ACT Government policy on stocking in local waters. Watch this space. NSW CFA News Full issue for March is here and additional update covering the quarterly meeting here. Hot topics are: ACORF to be replaced by 'Recreational Fishing NSW' NSW Minister for Primary Industries, Katrina Hodgkinson, has announced from Ballina today that a new advisory body, Recreational Fishing NSW, will be set up to replace the current Advisory Council on Recreational Fishing (ACORF). Snowy Hydro water smart phone app coming soon Snowy Hydro is currently developing a free smart phone app that will provide another way of communicating information about lake levels and water releases to the general public The mobile app will be free and available on both ios and Android devices... They hope to launch the app in both Google Play and the App Store early in Ecologist heads to pub for mounted Murray cod Charles Sturt University lecturer, Dr Paul Humphries, is looking for up to 300 stuffed cod in country pubs as part of a study into how the Murray Darling Basin has changed. Dr Humphries says stuffed cod were like a time capsule of the Murray-Darling Basin's history. Some of the fish go back to the 1800s. Cod can be nominated through Dr Humphries' Facebook page, Stuffed Murray Cod In Pubs. Carp fishing research survey A research project aims to find out about why people volunteer to fish for carp. The researchers are interested in how many people take part in this activity, how and where people fish, their motivations for doing so and what they do with their catch. Answering the survey will help researchers build a picture of carp fishing in NSW. This will enable better understanding of the role that volunteers play in carp management. You can complete the survey online at Have your say on lifejacket standards review The Maritime Management Centre in NSW is calling on members of the boating public to have their say on a draft paper reviewing lifejacket safety standards in Australia. Members of the public can provide their feedback on the draft paper until Friday 3 April and can access it online at this link. 8
Newsletter of the Canberra Anglers Association April 2015 Crown Road Closures and Access The meeting was attended by Alistair McBurnie of NSW DPI. Alistair made a presentation to the meeting regarding his ongoing work with angler access. Two key points the NSW Government is pushing ahead with sales of crown land (potentially removing fishing access); a comprehensive listing of anglers access is being developed but no date yet on it being available to the public on the web. (Editor s note: CAA executive will keep its eye on this and advise membership) A Snippet from our President From: Geoffrey Sent: Thursday, 12 March :48 AM Subject: Look what I caught yesterday Just kidding, wish it was me. Just have to keep fishing. Maybe a reference in the newsletter? Geoff One whale of a brown trout Kansas man lands third largest brown trout in Arkansas history "I was just walking the bank. I knew there was a little rock outcropping fish could hide behind to get out of the current." Johnston was using a spin-casting rig with a rainbow trout minnow imitation behind a spoon when lightning struck. Earlier, his fishing buddies with more trout experience told Johnston not to set the hook the way bass fisherman should. Rather, they told him simply to lift the line. "I threw the bait there once or twice, and all of a sudden she just hit the bait. I thought, 'Oh my 9
Newsletter of the Canberra Anglers Association April 2015 gosh, this is a good bite,' " Johnston said. "So, I don't set the hook, which is a very hard habit to break. I just lift the rod, and pull straight up, and she just takes off. She pretty much pulled the whole reel off. She pulled almost all the backing off the reel. Calvin Johnston was using a spin-casting rig with a rainbow trout minnow imitation behind a spoon when lightning struck. (Photo: Submitted photo) "I was worried, because I couldn't remember what kind of knot I'd tied at the base of the reel. I get the drag set and I start reeling in some, and then I see her come up and swirl and hit the water. " It was at this point Johnston said he decided he needed some help. "I thought holy cow this is a monster, I need some help. So I started calling for my brother," he said. "Later, I found out he heard me, but he said, 'I'm not going down there, it's cold, he ain't got no fish.' What a brother, right? He blew me off typical brother." Johnston continued to struggle with the monstrous fish. A fellow angler at the resort saw him and ambled over not terribly excited. "I asked him to go find a net because I had a monster on. He didn't really believe me," Johnston said. "But, he went and found a net. Then, she hit the surface again and he realized what I had. He was shocked." Johnston fought the fish for about 20 minutes, unsuccessfully attempting to land it twice. Finally, the third time was a charm. Cooking Corner Chef Jason s Tuross Flatbread Pizza: Some sundried tomato and oregano flatbread, with tomato paste concentrate and maybe some garlic (unless I forgot) and some EVOO drizzled, topped with rocket and baby spinach, Bodalla farmhouse cheddar, kalamata olives, and I can't recall if I added some meat - sliced steak, ham, bacon or what I had lying around cooked in the fridge. I may have added some capsicum or red onion on it as well - I think I had half a red onion in the fridge for my wraps over the weekend. Season with some cracked pepper and salt. Recommend pre-heating the pan before putting the flatbread on, and the bread/pan doesn't need oiling beforehand, so it crisps up better. (Editor s note for those who don t follow the many TV cooking shows: EVOO = Extra Virgin Olive Oil <grin>). Our Cooking Page is available for new recipes what with the recipe above and after his superlative performance on the Goodradigbee outing in March, we are waiting for Jason M to record more of his efforts. More recipes from other members welcome please. Equipment Review These can be found in our Gear Review page on the web. Contributions from members on other items they ve been using are welcome please. 10
