Dear Mr. Caihe, We shall be staging two Ballroom Dancing Championships early next year and they will be as follows Scottish Professional Dancing Championship, Tuesday February 21st, Scottish Amateur Dancing Championship, Tuesday, March 20th, We shall be very glad to hear whether you would be interested in filming either or both of these events for showing in Scotland. Both these events rank with the top three Ballroom Dancing events held in Great Britain. Leading amateur and professional couples travel from all over Great Britain to take part and on previous occasions we have had an audience of 3,000 people present. Yours sincerely, (sgd) J. Executive Producer/Editor - Paths Mawm. 27th December, I enclose herewith copy of a letter received by Mr. Caine, our Area Publicist, which refers to two Ballroom Dancing Championships to be held in St. Andrew's Hall, Glasgow, in the new year. As you probably know, these events are a big draw in this part of the country and I would suggest that,if time permits, we could cover the Amateur Championship on March 20th. The DAM BUSTERS tire

In reply to your Memo, of Deoenber 27th, and copy of letter received from Mr. Caine, these stories make fair possibles, but we oould only cover one item. Perhaps you oould find out for us which is the best for a Pictorial and Newsreel angle. I note that you suggest that we should film the Amateur Dancing Championship on the 20th March. Perhaps you oould also find out if they would agree to install the necessary lighting as it would be too costly if we had to light the story.

I have been in touch with Mr. Hardy of the Scottish "Daily Record" and "Evening News" and he assures me that satisfactory lighting can be laid on. We are both of the opinion that whilst the Professional Championship would be the most spectacular, from our point of view the Amateur Championship on March 20th would have mor* commercial value. Dear Mr. Cummins, I was very pleased to learn from Mr. MacPhail of your Scottish Office that it may be possible for you to cover one of the Scottish Dance Championships. I think it would be advisable if I bring you completely into the picture with both events so that you can decide which offers the best possibilities. The Scottish Open Professional Championship takes place at St* Andrew's Sails, Glasgow, on Tuesday, February 20th (7»30.p.m. until 1.0.a.m.) This event ranks amongst the top Championships in Great Britain and attracts all the leading professionals throughout England as well as Scotland. Unfortunately, there are not a great number of Scottish professional dancers, possibly we shall have only ten entries from Scotland and the remainder, about thirty from England, chiefly the London area. Whilst this event is an outstanding spectacle, it has a strong English flavour. On the other hand the Scottish Open Amateur Championship, at the same hall on Tuesday, March 20th (7.30.p.m. to 1.0.a.m.) will be predominately Scottish in character. We anticipate about one hundred entries, with only ten English couples taking part. Entries will be from all over Scotland including the Orkneys and down to the Borders. Both/ "

6 -2- Both events have been in existance since 1928, and I believe they are the second oldest championships of their kind being exceeded by one year by the London 'STAR' event. Both amateurs ani professionals have been proud to boast "Scottish Open Champion... on their letter paper for many years. We appreciate that it may not be possible to cover both events but whichever one is decided upon you can be assured of our maximum co-operation. We would print a bold panel in the official programme to say that the event was being filmed by Pathe and would be shown at cinemas all over Scotland. In addition, we would give a similar announcement in the "Daily Record" and then publish the list of cinemas at which the film could be seen. In addition double crown bills could be printed and forwarded to the cinemas, also to our local offices and newsagents in the immediate vicinity. We would supply additional photoflood lighting to help your cameraman, these have been used in the past to good advantage and comprise four 500 watt photoflood lights which could be fitted where required.
