2 2 THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL RECORD ALAN KIPPAX SPORTS STORE 26 MARTIN PLACE Phone: BW8284 SHERRIN, FAULKNER, CARNIVAL BALLS SPECIAL SHORTS, BOOTS, HOSE LAST WEEK'S STAR PLAYERS It is a matter for regret that all clubs have not supplied information for this column. Players, considered by their clubs to have turned in sterling performances, irrespective of grade, are entitled to have their names placed before the general public. It must be obvious that one cannot witness all five games In each premiership round, and that followers of the game are interested in all teams and all games' results. Publicity officers of clubs will do a service to clubs and individual players by publicising their efforts in the League's official journal. It is not a difficult task, and the requirements needed to fulfil this important chore each week are fully known to all clubs. Apologies are tendered the responsible officers of Balmain, Newtown, St. George, Western Suburbs, Eastern Suburbs and Liverpool for our inability to use fully the material they did supply. For. the Senior teams the following were [considered best afield: Balmain Peter Malouf (best on ground), Ray Moore, A. Gallagher, Gerald Hickey and the Longley brothers. Newtown-: Billy Free, Laurie McNulty, Alec' Dickson, Barney Barker, Greg Schroeder, Billy Cottis. St. George: Keith Schow, Ray McFarland, Rod Wales and Peter Symonds. 1 ' Western ' Suburbs: Jack Chester, Nev. McLeod, Bob Hall, Phil Miles, Alan Kelly. Eastern Suburbs: Alf Penno, Jack Dean, Roy Hayes, Kevin Little, Billy Ayton, Don Wilson. Liverpool: Don Creek, Harold Parker, Gary Leighton, Jim Sutherland, Ron Nolan, Jim Slade. Reserve Graders who stood out in the first game of the season were: Balmain: L. Dawson, D. Longley, J. Bugg and R. Lee. Newtown: J. Collett, L. Coughtrey, J. Franklin, "Buckets" Terlick, and P. Hammond. St. George: Harold Lloyd and Bernie Colquohoun. Western Suburbs: Pat Hayes, Frank McKenzie and Jack Kuschert. Eastern Suburbs: Des Saunders, John Grahame, Adrian Cannon, Bobby Jones, and John McCartney. Liverpool: A. Longworthy, G. Nolan, R. Wells, D. Bryce, G. Way, and D. Hunt. Reserve Grade Scores (Round 1) Newtown 5-8 (37) d. N. Shore 3-8 (26). St. Geo. 9-5 (59) d. S. Sydney 4-7 (31). E. Subs (83) d. S.-Naval 2-5 (17). W. Subs (85) d. B'town 2-1 (13). Liverpool 6-7 (43) d. Balmain 1-2 (8). REPORT Central Umpire Fuller reported both St. George and South Sydney Reserve Grade teams on opening day. Both, teams were late on the field, and both' were short of players, the Tigers fielding 14 and the Rabbit-ohs 17. This matter is still, at time of going to press, sub judice. Therefore no comment is permissible. /'.
3 THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL RECORI 3 THE CRYSTAL BALL (Clearing a Little) As: a result of last week's opening round, a little,, extra knowledge has been gained as to the capabilities of this year's Pennant contenders. We can therefore proceed to an analysis of teams' chances., in the Second Round. Balmain and Newtown meet at Erskineville, the only game listed for Saturday. This should prove a good match, as both teams appear fairly evenly balanced. Both losers in their first engagement, they nevertheless showed that they will not be easy for any opponent this season. The Magpies ran out of gas last week against the Rangers, but gave indications that with more solid conditioning'they will be able to go four quarters at top pace. Newtown's 7-16 against the Robins' 9-6 tells the tale of their 2 points defeat. A little more steadiness in front of goal and they'd have had a win to their credit. You may take your pick here. The League "Babies" face up to'the Sailors at Trumper, and in spite of their being run over by the more experienced Picket Pirates, Bankstown have the material to develop into a good combination. They were handicapped by lack of a training ground to enable them to run as a team and get to know each other really well in action. That deficiency should be partly remedied now and patrons of Trumper should see a good display from the "new boys." The Navy, looking winners at threequarters time with a 17 points lead, could not match the Bulldogs' brilliant last quarter. Here again is another Sailors' team with the equipment to be well in at the finish of the season. It looks like the Navy to "tie up" first. Last start winners St. George and Liverpool meet at Rosedale in what should prove an excellent tussle. The chief advantage' here, it would seem, is the home ground'one, but the Rangers would be no odds-on pop to win. The Tigers have a good' blend of experience and youth, able to counter speed and variation of play as shown by their win over the fast Southerners. With the home team the same, is the case, as they were able to match the Magpies' early speed and then win very comfortably. Another match in which chances appear even. No selection. Souths go to the Pirates' den at Picken Oval. Wests, not yet at full strength, had an overwhelming win against Bankstown. Souths went down to St. George, and this match looks like the good little men being beaten by the good big men. Although Souths' pace may worry the Pirates for a while, the Rabbit-obs lack height and weight. Wests' ruck power and distance devouring kicking to their "tall-timber" will probably prove-&o big a hurdle for the "mosquito fleet." The-'Pirates are the pick. At North Sydney,' Robins' versus Bulldogs. Both won last week and both came from behind to snatch victory.. On paper, Easts' was the better performance, as. they deieated a stronger team than did Norths. The Tricolors finished exceptionally well, while the Redbreasts had to hold off a very determined challenge and only just got there. Norths' kicking was far more accurate than Easts, but again a lot will hinge on the ruck duels. Both sides have excellent rucks and will give their rovers every chance to move to the attack. A game to give a line on two teams highly fancied to figure in the Final Four,,' Easts should win, but it won't be easy...
4 4 THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL RECORD N.S.W. STATE TEAM To represent at the Centenary Championship this year, the N.S.W. team will be composed of players from Broken Hill, Newcastle and Sydney. It was the earnest wish of the N.S.W. League that Council would confirm the permission granted by the V.F.L., and V. Country Football League to N.S.W. to include for the Centenary players from the whole of the State. The confirmation was refused. The N.S.W. League then lodged a strong appeal with the Council, pointing out that for the 1947 and 1950 championships it had granted N.S.W. permission to include players from the Rlverina and the Ovens and Murray League. This appeal was refused. The N.S.W. team will be announced by the State Selection Committee on 9th June. ARCH OVER THE ARCH In 1946 Arch Pilling was considered by many to be the best junior in Sydney. He played for Newtown, but, because the Red and Whites were so strong then, he was not certain of a berth in the Senior side. Arch, Bill Cottis, and several other Juniors, unwilling to miss out on valuable experience, applied for clearances to North Shore. The clearances were refused, and the only losers were North Shore. Arch went from strength to strength, achieving State representation in 1948, and a few years later being honoured with the State captaincy. This year he has taken over the job as captain-coach of the Shoremen 12 years after his first attempt to transfer. And to round off the story, he last week led the Robins to a 2-point win over his old club, Newtown! KING'S CROSS FOOTBALL CLUB A meeting is to be held at 15 Tusculum Street, Potts Point, at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, 16th April. This meeting has been convened by Messrs. Paul Muller, Peter Bazley, Jack Casey, Bob Cork and Jack Allen, all past players of the University Club. If sufficient members can be signed the club will enter a team in the Sydney Districts' Association competition, in which there are three known teams (Uni. Golds, Uni. Blues and Campbelltown) and others to affiliate. The convenors will meet intending members at 7.30 p.m. at the Macleay Street end of the front bar, Rex Hotel, to conduct them to Tusculum Street. THE SWAN CHANGE COLOUR The Australian National Football Council has approved of an amendment of the uniform worn by W.A. State players. The change is made in the jersey only. The previous W.A. jersey was gold, black trimmings, black swan. The new jersey will be black, gold yoke and cuffs, black swan on gold background, gold numbers. 5 THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL RECORD 5 Compliments of... Messrs. AMBROSOLI & THOMPSON PTY. LTD. Manufacturers of Blazers and "Warm-Up" Jackets 342 ELIZABETH STREET, CITY MA 3508 HOW WOULD YOU RULE? Last year the V.F.L. asked the Football Council to give an interpretation as to how the Laws of the Game should be applied by an umpire in the following case: "Player No. 1 of team 'A' has mark or free kick in the centre of the ground. The umpire, glancing down the field towards the goal to which player No. 1 is kicking, sees the fullforward of team 'A' infringe against the full-back of the opposing side by pulling him round the neck. This incident occurs right on the goal-line." "As it would be penalising the fullback's team to bring the ball from the centre of the ground right into the goal base and award the full-back a free kick, what action should the umpire take? "Would he just ignore the infringement again the full-back and let player No. 1 of team 'A' have his kick, or would he take the ball from player No. 1 and bounce it at that spot, thus penalising the infringement committed by the full-forward of team 'A'"? Well, fans? Give it some thought before you read the Council's verdict below. The Council ruled (1) The Field Umpire would signal "time on," stop play, and proceed to the spot where the infringement took place. He would warn the offending player that the infringement had been noticed, and a repetition would result in him being reported for unseemly conduct. (2) As a penalty against the offending player's team, "ball up" where the mark or free kick was to be taken. Right? 25 YEARS AGO At the Carnival held in Sydney in 1933, N.S.W. won the Minor States' title, defeating Queensland, Canberra and Tasmania. The Light Blues lost to Victoria by 53 points ( ) but were able on the final day to hold West Australia to 10 points, W.A , N.S.W Gordon Coventry, one of the greatest full-forwards the game has known, was leading goal-kicker in the series with a tally of 30. Next on the list was Stan. Powditch with 27. As a St. George player, Stan established the all time record for N.S.W. with 113 in a season. Only two other players at the carnival bettered 15 goals L. Pye (Tas.) 19, and V. Troughton (N.S.W.) 16. 9 THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL RECORE 9 A LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear Sir, It surely was a great disappointment for those followers of the National game who journeyed to Trumper Park last Sunday. Expecting some worthwhile improvements, instead they found the same old drab and depressing surroundings. The outer fence half finished, no arena fence, the score board moved to a very awkward site and grass near the grandstand uncut for months and now two to three feet high. What some of our interstate visitors must think of the headquarters in Sydney may be left to the imagination, but it surely could be hardly complimentary. Once again that hardy annual, the so-called programme with the players' names and numbers is again in evidence and again, as in the past, sadly in need of comprehensive revision. It is almost impossible to follow the names and numbers of the players as presented in the programme. And yet the remedy is so simple. Every player should have a registered number for the whole of the season, and these could be printed in the "Record" each week. Should any club change the player's number they should be fined or else forfeit the game. If our officials could hear the criticism by the followers of Australian football when week after week they are called on to pay for information which is so grossly misleading, maybe something could be done to rectify this sad state o affairs. If the same thing occurred in Melbourne the uproar would be heard in Sydney, but apparently over her anything goes. Yours, G. F. LONG. 36 Fletcher Street, Campsie, N.S.W. Comment. The N.S.W. League does not own Trumper Park. The City Council has begun improvements to the ground, and at the conclusion of this season Trumper will be closed for extensive renovations and the building of a new grandstand. In the opinion of many to whom I have spoken (mainly spectators) there has been an improvement generally for spectators, though the absence of a large section of the arena fence is deplored. I must point out that players and umpires are worse off (in the appointments in their rooms) than any spectator. That "hardy annual" is not "a socalled programme." It is the Australian National Football Record. The failure of some clubs to adhere to the numbered guernseys allotted players is a cause of dissatisfaction. Again, 1 agree that most people buy the "Record" for the purpose of keeping tabs on players, and the team's numbers should be accurate. Our officials cannot escape hearing criticism; I, least of all; but none of us has at any time or in any way, to my knowledge, tried to "grossly mislead" anybody. Action will, I am sure, be taken to rectify the fault you mention. I think also that the "Record" is still good value for sixpence in spite of some mistakes that occur. As to uproar in Melbourne, my own experience is that the Melbourne follower is very much as his Sydney counterpart. On a visit to Fitzroy Ground, for Footseray and Fitzroy in'1951. Quite' a number of spectators (including myself) were sold copies of the Y.F.L. "Record" which were 12 months..old. The reaction? The spectators (including myself) threw away the ''dud," exclaimed in wonder at the business acumen of the urchin wtio made suckers of us, and got the information we needed from those who knew. THE HON. EDITOR.

Sara (W.S.) 2 HAVE YOU GOT A NAME? No offence intended by the question but the purpose in asking it is explained below. At the November meeting of the Australian National Football Council, Mr. C. B. Andrew, Council Secretary, expressed his objection to the use of the word "Rules" when referring to Australian Football. He drew attention to the recent adoption, by a section of the Melbourne press, of the word "Footy." He claimed it was necessary that a JIM MITCHELL short word be used in newspaper headings, and "Footy" could be the word we are searching for. Mr. Gillon, V.F.A. delegate, agreed that "Australian Football" is too cumbersome for everyday use. The Council resolved, on the motion of Messrs. Gillon and A. J. Snow (N.S.W.A.N.F.L.) to refer this ques tion (of a short name for our game) to all affiliated bodies for urgent attention. Now, have YOU got a name? If you have one you consider suitable, let us know. Write to the League Secretary, 10 Hunter Street, Sydney, or pass your suggestion to your club. Come on, fans, give it a name! ROBIN RONEO North Shore have jumped right into their publicity work this season. They have made arrangements with their local newspapers to feature items concerning their club and its playing members. This is a step in the right direction, but they've improved on it, and are now producing their own club magazine with the appropriately pithy title "Stab Kick." May their venture be a great success. Perhaps their broadsheet could be distributed at North Sydney to "outsiders." JIM MITCHELL FOR ALL SPORTING GEAR ST. GEORGE CLUB BUILDING 7 CROFTS AVENUE, HURSTVILLE Phone: LU 2046
