2 I 8 THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL RECORD THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL RECORD 5 DOWN SOUTH For those with a Southern accent in their football thoughts we publish below the full list of V.F.L. captains and coaches. Under the new line up, only Foots~ cray have a player doing both chores, Ted Whitten. Ron (Old Smokey) Clegg, South Melbourne's captain/coach last year, has kept only the captaincy this year. Bill Faul is the Bloods' coach. At Glenferrie, carnival star Graham Arthur is captain, and former outstanding ruck man John Kennedy has taken over the Hawthorn coaching from Jack Hale. The Smith Bros., Len and Norm, are again coaching Fitzroy, and premier side Melbourne, respectively. Alan Gale has another season as the GoriIIa skipper, while the Demons have chosen Ron (The Powerhouse) Barassi as their captain. To guide Geelong, Bob Davis has taken on the coaching popsition. The very briiiiant Ron Hovey is the Cats' number one on the field. Ken Hands retains the coaching job at Carlton where Bruce (The Rock) Comben has been elected captain. Veteran Wally Carter is North Melbourne's mentor with Albert (Iron Man) Mantell0 doing the No. 1 field job. The Tigers have entrusted their hopefuls to the guidance of Alan McDonald, and have appointed the clever rover, Ron Branton, as "field" director. Phonse Kyne, one of the best ever in football, is coaching Collingwood, with reliable Murray Weideman as skipper. St. Kilda has again given its side into--the care of Jim Francis, Brownlow winner, and champion centre halfback, Neil Roberts, will be captain. Finally out to Windy Hill, where "King" Dick Reynolds wiii once again coach Esseridon. The Bombers' games leader is carnival centreman Jack Clarke. INJURED PLAYERS The list of injured last week must be an all time record - fortunately. Only one injury of a serious nature was reported. Geoff Shone, Easts ruckman, was injured in an accidental clash with big team mate Peter Clark. It was thought Geoff could have sustained a couple of cracked ribs. Injured some weeks ago, Newtown skipper Jack Armstrong is still out of action. Jack is suffering from a flmystery ailment" affecting his back, hip and thigh. Despite physiotherapy and ray treatment the injury is not responding too well. Armstrong will probably rest until he gets the O.K. from his club's doctor. CAN HE? If a player, lying on, or over, the ball, is held by an opponent, can the umpire penalise the player held? Yes! Law 13 (b) covers the case. It says: "A player who lies on or 'over the ball is deemed to be in possession." GUESS THE WEIGHT There is no guessing allowed as to the weight of the footballs used in our games. The weight of the footballs is governed by Law 2 (a) which.says: "Footballs SHALL be 16 ounces or ] 7 ounces in weight." Manufacturers of Blazers and Club Jackets 342 ELIZABETH STREET, CITY - MA 350B THE RECORD SECTION (By G. F. LONG) Fitzroy's total of 1-0 against Foots. cray in 1953 is the lowest score by a V.F.L. club in recent years. It is by no means the lowest ever. That unhappy record is held by St. Kilda with its 0-1 against Geelong, way back in Geelong scored On the other hand the highest scores have been registered by Richmond with 31 goals against N. Mel. bourne and a similar amount against Melbourne. Against North, Doug Strang had 16 shots and scored 14 goals. Two players, Harold Robertson of 'South Melbourne and Fred Fanning, Melbourne, share the League record for the greatest number of goals kicked in one match. Both scored 18 goals, Robertson in and Fanning in 1947, and on both occasions St. Rilda were the victims. Dick Reynolds, Essendon's "King Richards," has the longest record of any player in the history of Melbourne League football. Reynolds played 320 League games, nine more than the total of that most controversial player, Richmond's Jack (Captain Blood) Dyer. Reynolds has also been coach at Essendon for the past 21 years. In the marking section one of the greatest feats ever was by a member of the famous Strang family. Playing [or Richmond against South Melbourne he took 28 marks for the match, an average of 7 per quarter. The player was Gordon Strang. Collingwood's deeds stand supreme in the Melbourne League. In 63 seasons they have been out of the four only 14 times. Five of these, were during the Second World War, when they had to, battle to field a t~am. For the first fifteen years they were in the League CoIIing\v-oodwere never out of the four. This is a seq\lence THE GAME IS BETTER TO WATCH As a spectacle, our game has improved out of all recognition over the past 40 years. The improvement has been gradual From a relatively slow moving game it has reached the stage now where the whole emphasis is on SPEED OF PLAY. The old style-mark-stop-walk back - kick - has given way to the "play on" game packed with excitement that we enjoy to-day. The whole spirit of the game now is "keep moving." To illustrate the point. In 1925 in a semi-final between Melbourne and Geelong, Umpire McMurray awarded exactly 104 free kicks! It must have been murder to watch. 100 minutes of football with 104 free kicks! And it is reasonable to assume that in that game there were a goodly number of marks taken. We could not imagine any present day collection of paying guests putting up with a slow motion contest of that kind. Fans to-day want fast football and they get it. Maybe umpires make mistakes, but so long as they keep the game moving, ignore minor breaches and allow the fans 100 per cent. entertainment there will be very few causes for real complaint. that has never looked like being equalled by any other team. And for the "Record" a few words of advice from Alan Nash, V.F.L. Senior umpire for 12. years. "You can't go wrong if you' always go for the ball." All the champions who have been Brownlow Medal winners have always been ball players. (For Brownlow: one might with equal justice sub. stitute Phelan).
3 4 THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL RECORD THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL RECORD 9 JIM MITCHELL JIM MITCHELL FOR ALL SPORTING GEAR UMPIRES' NOTES ST. GEORGE CLUB BUILDING 7 CROFTS AVENUE, HURSTVILLE NORMAN Phone: LU 2046 (By RUBY CRAIG) Two new boundary boys in the Association are the McMullen brothers. These boys are converts from Rugby Union and had not seen our game played prior to this season. Warwick, the elder brother, went to school at Randwick High where his football activities were playing Rugby Union. Younger brother, Russell, is still a scholar at Marist Brothers' High School, Darlinghurst. From raw material these two lads are improving more and more each game. As you all know experience is everything. They are only too willing to learn. Keep up the good work, lads. Pat Kelly, our ever alert secretary, is a product of De La Salle College, Melbourne. Pat umpired for several seasons in the Federal League in Vi":> toria. Pat's father will be a visitor to this State at the week-end where he hopes to see his boy in action. Strange to say, Dad has never seen his boy umpire as yet, so Pat! best foot forward at the week-end. It is pleasing to see ex-board member Mr. Bill Birks up and around atter his recent illness. Many thanks from this Association to the good people who put their cars at his disposal so that he can go to the games and enjoy them. LEADING FIRST GRADE L. McNulty (N.) 21 C. Quilkey (Ha,I.) 16 E. Gthers to turn in good games for the 'Town were Harry :F'ree, Graham :_aml)rook and Greg Schroeder. i..anksto","'n centre man 'l'ony Whish- Wilson was best on the ground. He ga ~'e terrific drive rrom the pi vat, and played a really brilliant last quarter. Jack Dewhurst, on a half-back flank, played stoutly au day, -while Alan Dalton did a power of. vork in defence. Don Munro again turned in aver)', solid effort. Outstanding for St. George was the tireless and very effective young Graham Green. Len Onions in the forwards, along with Denis Anspatch. showed out 'veil. At the centre, Terry Heenan was a winner. Ellis Noack dam ina.ted the rueks, and was good overhead. Col Harris ably led a very strong defence. Wal Wallace played a very good game. Ii~or the Sailors Ray Stivey was \'ery good, doing a ton of work both in attack and deience. Col Mason and George ljetton "vere a capable pail' of defenders. At the spearhead, I-at McCarthy notched 4 goals and had to battle hard for the lot. Best of the rest were Jack Harding and "Chips" McCartney. Balmain's best was the very determined Peter Hare. Peter was tops whether placed or on the ball. Greg Hickey did another top quality job at full.back, while Noel Workman had a really good day. Kev Duncan and i{on ]~atterson battled well in the rucks, and Bruce Chandler did "vell at centre. Souths had a winner in Bob Davies,,vho seems on the improve. Leon O'Donnell had some very good patches. Kev Batchelor roved well. Tvm ethers to sho 'N out were Eric Camp- LeU and Johnny Atkins (second half). (This offence frequently takes place where a team, holding to a slender lead, is desperately trying to keep their opponents at bay. By forcing the ball out of bounds they make their opponents' task more difficult, because the throw in keeps play near the boun. dary, wastes time,.prevents the opposition opening up the play and can be used to keep forcing the ball out of bounds not once, but several times. It is difficult for an umpire to decide whether the ball has been wilfully forced out, but free kicks can be and are given where flagrant breaches of this rule occur.) comer Ron Gibbs who got 4 goals. Eilly Ayton was well in the play. At centre half-forward Adrian Cannon was frequently under notice, and until injured Geoff Shone went extra well in the ruck. Li.erl;ool was best served by Tassie Korquay, vho had plenty to do in defence and did it well. Vic Obvay gave the H.angers another good game. Only others to show any form were Bill Davies and Ken Tymms. Terry Ingersoll (7 goals) had one of his best days for Wests, and seems to be getting back to his best. Ron.i ~d:~lsagain handled the pivot job very capably. Alan Kelly and ROll Burgess \":ere best of the defenders. l;ill Ha,vldns played a grand game at centre half-forward. Once again Skipper Ray Chad, vick, this tin.ce at centre, was best afield for!\jolth Shore. Tas Woodard was partl ~ularly good in defence. Stuart Whitelaw and Ralph Raynbam were the only other Sharemen to come under notice.
4 10 THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL RECORD THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL RECORD DECISION Last Wednesday evening a special meeting of the full League of N.S.W. was called at the Sports Club. Hunter Street, Sydney. The agenda item for discussion was whether the League would continue to play 16 a-side games or whether it would revert to the 18 a-side games played for so many years. Last week-end was the concluding series of the experimental four week period agreed upon by the League in 1959, as a test of the suitability of 16 a-side football for the Sydney competition. All clubs (Sydney-Naval excepted) were represented at the meeting. Every person in attendance was given the opportunity of presenting his point of view. After a very lengthy discussion the motion "That this League continue to play its competition with 16 a-side teams" (moved by Mr. Whitty, Balmain Secretary) was put. It was defeated by 13 votes to 10. This motion (as a recommendation to the Board of Management) was then submitted to the Board for ratification. After further discussion the Board by a 6 to 3 majority ratified the League decision. This now means that we iiumediately revert to the former playing system of 18 a'.side teams. 'I'o-day, then, you will see opposing teams lined up as they have done for so many years. AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL CLUB Persons holding application forms are kindly requested to complete same and return to Mr. A. J. Snow, c/o Sports Club, 10 Hunter Street, Sydney. NOTE WELL! At the meeting held last Wednesday evening, the Board of Management of the N.S.W.A.N.F.L. decided on two matters that were raised in discussion. The decisions were:- (1) The playing times in each quarter of Senior games will be reduced to twenty-two (22) minutes. This alteration is to begin this weekend (for Round 5) and is to continue until further notice. (2) The draw scheduled for Round 6, i.e., on the week-end of 7th/8th May is to be varied by altering the dates and grounds for two matches. The draw now reads:- Saturday, 7th May: Eastern Suburbs v. South Sydney, at Erskineville Oval. Sunday, 8th May: Balmain v. Newtown, at Trumper Oval. YOUR VERDICT, SIR? Have a look at this little umpiring problem, and consider how you would have ruled. Here it is. A player is kicking for goal from a mark (or free kick). The man on the mark goes over the mark, but the kicker has booted the ball through the goal posts. What's your verdict, sir? Would you give "all clear" and count the goal? Would you give the kicker another kick? Bring the man on the mark back 15 yards and then allow another kick for goal? There's only ONE right answer and it's laid down in Law 10 (i) which states: "0) In the event of an op. ponent going over the mark when. a player is kicking for goal from a mark or a free kick and a goal has been scored, the field umpire shall give the 'all clear' and the goal shall be counted. If a goal has not been scored the player shall be given the optio~ of another kick." All clear? selves to the change in line up. If they do improve, they could worry Balmain. Souths just got up to defeat Liverpool, and in that game the Rangers showed they had the nucleus of a good side. We hope they "kiclt on," but we just cannot see them plucking the Magpies. Finally to North Sydney where the locals oppose Easts. With 18 a-side we choose Easts to win, but issue the warning. If Norths click as a team they will be mighty hard to beat. On form, and on paper, Easts are the same old Easts, practically, as last year. They are capable of much better football than they have shown, and with two wins after two losses, should be able to go on to more wins. And Norths? Potentially one of the best sides in the competition, with players the equal of any, but up to now unable to settle into combined efforts. We hope they can function efficiently as team. It seems they are very unsettled, with players'trying to do too many specialist jobs. At the moment. we think they will be further unsettled by the line up changes, and,,>'illneed a stro:q.ghand to "pull them into gear." That's all for DOW. See you next \veek. SCORING Highest score to date this season is Newtown's (170 points) against North Shore. Lowest score to date is Liverpool's 0-6 (6 points) against Easts last week. St. George have scored 3 centuries- 119, 158, loo-in 4 games. Wests and Balmain have beaten the century once each. Banksto\yn missed a century by a point in the opening round. Highest losing score is North Shore's ]2-18 (90 points) v. Newtown, Newtown. at the moment, has recorded the lowest winning score 7-]4 (56 points) v. Bankstown. IT'S A GIFT. A Season Ticket for 35/-. 5 2 THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL RECORD ALAN KIPPAX SPORTS STORE 26 MARTIN PLACE-- Phone: BW 8284 THE CRYSTAL BALL SHERRIN, FAULKNER, CARNIVAL BAllS SPECIAL SHORTS, BOOTS, HOSE The Crystal seems to be improving with age. Four out of five last week throws Mandelbaum's shadow just a little further away. The Bulldogs upset the "perfect score" but we still live in hopes of "picking the programme" one day. One really delightful aspect of crystal gazing (apart from the healthy glow induced by a very red face) is that being wrong gives a lot of people the pleasure of being able to tell you how stupid you are. And that takes us along to this week's fearless fore. cast. Sydney-Naval, which plays Bankstown at headquarters on Saturday, should notch another win, but it will not be easy. If Bankstown can capitalise on the drive it gets' 'from its successful ceilntre,it could prove very troublesome. A tremendous amouti't will hinge on the centre battle and the ruck duels. Naval have strong rucks, but their rovers are lacking a little. Bankstown's rucks do not appear a' match for the Tars, but their rovers are very capable.. Ove~al1, the Sailors look stronger. with very solid defence lines, and a better equipped forward division. Albeit, we select t~e Sailors.. At Erskineville, Newtown Ilnes up against Souths, who, if they. decide' to concentrate on football, could go close to beating Newtown. Souths have youth" p~,ce,and great potential. They will nee,d.all those attributes in opposition to the experienced. and olever team work of the Red and Whites. As w,e, see it, the really deciding factor here will be Newtown's un. doubted ability in playing the "loose man" game, and in providing the opportunities for their sharpshooters to hit the main target. A good game should be seen at Erko, with the home team taking the match points. Sunday sees unbeaten St. George, at Trumper. opposed to Wests. The Dragon killers have 'ithe form" and should win their fifth game in a row. Their team work is excellent, and if they settle in to the 18 a-side, should continue to function smoothly. They are "fighting.,fit," and most certainly are on the up grade. Wests will have to do everything right if they are to topple the' leaders. Although in second place,' with three wins, they have had a lot of good luck. They were lucky to beat Balmain, and lucky that Bankstqwn's fo,rward lines broke down. They lost to Easts in a poor game, and were lucky Easts' kicking was astray...trowever, the Pirates can do much better, and at headquarters always play good football. We must s,~le~t St. George to win this o.ne--they'are on the crest,.and "Willbe bard to :do~. Balmain journey to Liverpool, and should return with another win to,. their credit. The Magpies are doing particularly well. Their, team play is good, their share of the ball from the rucks is assured, t4~y have a staunch defensiv~ i;l~t,up, and their stamina is unquestioned.,,.-the Rang.ers,. f~ankly,. h~ve.di~~ appointed.
