Manufacturers of Blazers and Club Jackets 342 ELIZABETH StREET, CITY - MA 3S08 Phone: LU 2046 INJURED PLAYERS SOCIAL NOTES NEWS AND NOTES (By GUS LONG) Last week mention was made of Allan Cowling, 1l.year-old champion signed up by Hawthorn. Allan is a. rover with outstanding finesse, turns, courage and intelligence. Playing in the "Hawks" Annual Schoolboys' Lightning Premiership, his most notable feat was to carry the ball down field for 100 yards beating five opponents. It was a gem, writes Kevin Coghlan in the "Sporting Globe." For nineteen years the evergreen Ossie Grose has been able to leave the field under his own steam, However, near the finish of the game, at Erskineville last Saturday, Ossie suffered a very painful injury to his ankle and had to be carried off. A very wrathful victim, he bemoaned the fact in rather picturesque language that he would be unable to play golf on Sunday. Although making no pretensions to be a Kel Nagle, Gssie is a very good exponent of the Royal and Ancient Game. * Straight I'shooting" is one of funda. mentals of our great game, but far too often this is more "honoured in the breach than the observance." A striking instance of this was exemplified in the recent game between lead. ing V.F.A. teams Coburg and Moorabbin. Coburg from 30 shots had kicked 12 goals 18 behinds, or a total of 90 points. Moorabbin had nineteen shots and notched 16 goals and 3 behinds. For the first quarter they scored 2-1, second quarter 7-2, third quarter 14.2, last quarter From half time until well into the final quarter they kicked 9 goals straight. Coburg, although down 33 points at "lemons," rallied, but once more their kicking was astray, 5.7 in the final quarter. A great recovery indeed. I venture to assert that a game like the above would fill Trumper. * North Shore's new badge is an emblem that every supporter of this club should be proud to 'wear. Let us hope that the "Bear" emblem will be in keeping with North's efforts in the future or, rather, vice-versa." * In the South-West side which recently played their annual match with the ~"arrer League there were 11 playing coaches, all of whom had Melbourne League experience. It is obvious that with a truly representative side N.S.W. would not be battling along in the second division. * )(- * Is this a Record? Assumption Col. lege beat Essendon Grammar (338 points) to nil. More like a debacle, one thinks. WHAT IS SLINGING? The question has nothing to do with bribery, or "payola" in any shape or form. The the Laws of the Game, the A.N.F.C. defines "slinging" very clearly. Here is the A.N.F.C. definition: "Slinging is the act of catching a player by, or around, the neck and throwing, or attempting to throw, him on to the ground. The neck includes the top of the shoulder." Alan Pringle, Easts' and State half- -back, will ue-out of actioo for sofffeweeks yet. His loss will be keenly felt by the Bulldogs. Ralph Turner and Billy Free I returned to the playing arenas last week. Graham Raynham, one of Norths' I'terrible twins," suffered a severed blood vessel in the hand. He may be out for a few weeks. Another Northern "bear", Gray Moses, had to leave the field against "rests with a leg injury. He should be okay next week. 415 NUMBER NINE! A very strange fact-every losing team last week kicked 9 goals! 'Vests 9-13, Bankstown 9-10, Souths 9-10, St. George 9-8, and Liverpool 9-6. Sydney-Naval in winning from St. George also kicked 9 goals the final score. And to continue with the story, the two best goal-kicking performances.were by Laurie McNulty (Newto\vn) and Len Thompson (Balmain). Both booted 9 majors! And to finish, it's the second time this season these two players have kicked 9 goals in a match!. NORMAN ST. GEORGE. 3 PLAYERS' CREDIT LIST Ken Timms, Liverpool full.back, gave a magnificent exhibition of defensive play. His, kicking-in was excellent. Ron Timms was little inferior to Ken in the Ranger defence. Centre Gary Leighton, in top form, was expert in ball disposal. Roy Godfrey and Ken Lewis were good forwards on the day. Other Rangers to do well were Don Ortmann, Bill Edwards, Ken Menagh and Bill Davey. Top Tar was Ray Stivey. His roving display was a splendid effort. Bill Hellzinger scouted the packs very effectively. Dan Wilson was rock-like in defence. Jack Harding had a good day at centre, Des Butler did well in the rucks, and Alan Waack made a very good debut at full-forward for the Sailors. Newtown's star was Laurie McNulty who, striking top form, finished with 9 goals. Dave Little won his usual good share of the ball. Harry Free was most consistent and constructive. Richard Fuek battled well, and others to show out were Sonny Sambrook, Ron Grose and Richie Dare. In losing to Balmain, Souths' best were Jim Hourigan and Noel Peter. sen. Both men played with great determination all day. Don McEvoy handled and kicked well. Of the others Jim Moodie and Ray Lilleyman were best. Saints lost to Sydney.Naval, but Ellis Noack was outstanding for St. George. He hit out well, marked consistently, and bagged 3 majors. At centre half-forward Brian To\vnley played his best game this season. Veterans Percy Symonds, Col Harris and Pat McGrane were a trio of dour defenders. Outstanding for Norths was centre half-back Reg Robinson, who turned many West attacks with well-judged marks. State player, John Cooke, at centre half-fonvard, also caught the eye frequently, taking some brilliant THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL RECORD THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL RECORD marks. Skipper Ray Chadwick, showing tons of pace and ability notched 4 goals. Peter Croft and Stu Whitelaw both won well, but did really excellent work in the final term and tore Wests' defences to ribbons. SOCIAL NOTES BANKSTOWN. Although in second place on the League ladder, Sydney-Naval has a bad percentage In the final rounds of minor matches this poor percentage means that the Sailors must win matches. Teams pressing them close for a place in the four have much better percentages, and by reason of that must be a worry to the Tars, who appear to be finalists now, but could lose the double chance unless they improve their winning margins. DRAWN Wests' Reserve Graders have the unusual distinction of having played 'l'hree drawn games this season. It mu.st be a record of some description in Australian Football. Drawn games are pretty much of a rarity in a season, and it is most unusual for a team to figure in more than one in any series. But THREE! IN POSSESSION There is a great difference of opinion among code followers as to when a player is in possession of the ball. Some argue that to be in possession a player must have a physical hold on the ball-it must be in his hands or arms. This is not so. The A.N.F.C. rule, as laid down in the Laws of the Game is: "A player who LIES ON or OVER the ball is deemed to be in possession." Further, a player who runs, bouncing the ball, is in possession of it all the time until he disposes of it by handball or by kicking. While bouncing the ball the player signifies his intention of keeping control (possession) of the ball. Umpires are sometimes booed for giving a kick ag&inst a player bouncing the ball when he is held by an opponent. These decisions, which cause a lot of concern to players and spectators alike, led the A.N.F.C. Standing Committee some years ago to give a ruling on the subject. The ruling given by the committee, after a very long discussion, and in consultation with umpires' coaches, umpires, players and players' representatives was; "If the hold and the bounce occur together, the player bouncing the ball shall be penalised for holding the ball." Another important aspect of this question is-a player must throw the ball to the ground to bounce it. But the Laws of the Game forbid disposal of the ball by throwing. It is an interesting subject for debate, but should not cause any heartburnings to anybody, simply because the Council ruling on the matter is clear and unequivocal. WELCOME! It was most pleasing to see Cleaton "George" Powell back on deck again. "George," a fanatical North supporter, had a good day and he was a happy man over the "Bears" good \vin. HUNDREDS AND THOUSANDS Three teams have now scored a thousand points or more in competition games this season. Balmain 1045, St. George 1026, and Newtown Three teams have had a thousand or more points kicked against them. Liverpool 1042, Bankstown 1063, and North Shore OBITUARY St. George suffered a grievous loss when the very well.known Ted Shields died recently. Hailing from West Australia, Ted was non-playing coach of the 1934 and 1.935Senior sides, and for 20 years was a St. George committeeman. Ted Shields also had the distinction of being one of St. George's first Delegates to the N.S.W.A.N.F.L. His passing is deeply regretted, and the sincere condolences of all League and club officials and supporters are tendered to those he left behind. OUT WEST Western Suburbs' Third Grade this season have produced a very good side and look certainties for the grand final. Injuries have cut the team down from full strength, but they have still managed to get through with only one defeat. Star players Bruce Cook, Bob Perry and Doug Piggott are on the road to recovery and should be ready to play soon. ~~~\::?'I~'c:?t~"""'~"'~t ~ Co:mplimenfs of. ~ ~ Bayswater Hotel ~ ~ (A. Souths match them in everything except experience-a big handicap against old campaigners. Still, we believe it will be close. Balmain, rehabilitated after a depressing mid-season slump, have another victory in sight. Their defeat of Souths showed that they have all the requirements of worthy finalistspace, vigour, teamwork, aerial ability, accurate passing and goal kicking, and a hard earned never-say-die approach to the game. This is a newlook Balmain, capable of defeating any team in the competition. Against Liverpool they are opposed to a side that Lady Luck seems to have deserted this season. With only two wins on the board, fans might think that the Rangers are not much good. Get rid of that idea. Liverpool is a good side, playing attractive foot. ball and making all opponents battle for their match points. Their win over Newto\vn.vas most meritorious, as was that over Bankst01vn. 'fhey have tt sterling defence that gives nothing away, and.it would seem that only bad luck has prevented them 'vinning more matches. They will t.est Balmain thoroughly, especially at Rosedale, and although we think Bal. main will win, a victory to Liverpool \vould not surprise us one iota. And finally, a disappointing Wests are at home to leaders St. George. \i\tests are hard to follow now. They won five of their first six matches, lost three ill a row, beat Easts, and have now lost to Bankstown. Balmain and North Shore. Yet they have.vhat appears, on paper at least, as a stronger lineup than at any time this season. Actually it is hard to thid their weakness. Yet it must be there and perhaps it is a falling off in stamina. They are still in the Pennant race, but cannot afford any more losses. St. George should win on Sunday and consolidate their grip on the double chance. They are a well balanced side, but there is a tendency in their make up to get rattled quickly and fall into foolish errors. They are good at position play, their defence is excellent, and overall they are a strong side. Wests may be able to exploit Saints' weakness, which appears to be faulty use of ruck power..although Saints are the choice, it must be remembered that Wests inflicted Saints only defeat in their first eight matches. And Wests are quite capable of winning, though we feel that Saints will have learned the lesson and will be able to cover any gaps that may appear either in defence or attack. That's all for now. See you next week. PRESENTATIONS For games played during the recent Carnival series a number of awards were presented to members of the N.S.\V. team. League li:e member and code stalwart, ~tuby 'foung, presented a trophy for the best and fairest against Queensland to Alan Pringle. State coach, Jacli Atkins, gave his trophy to Dave Little as being the most useful player on the day. Against Canberra, Jack Atkins awarded a trophy to Ellis Noack as being best and fairest. Two trophies were awarded for the match against the V.F.A. - Jerry Davidson won the best and fairest, and Kevin Batchelor for the most consistent player in the series. Skipper Jack Harding was awarded a football signed by all his team mates and League officials, and the team in recognition of the wonderful services given by the coach, presented Jack Atkins with a set of cuff links, a tie pin, and an Italian jumper. Last, but not least, the team's mascot, young Jimmy Davies, received an inscribed, football.

5 " 2 THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL RECORD THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL RECORD 11 ALAN KIPPAX SPORTS STORE 26 MARTIN PLACE-- Phone: BW8284 THE CRYSTAL BALL We had many sorrowful moments last week before it was finally announced that North Shore and ;Easts had staved off disaster for the Ball. The loophole was there in the:,fore. cast, because prophesying is always a risky business-just as risky as :keep. iug out of the clutches of Mandelbaum. Old C.C. is certainly putting :up a determined battle for permanent possession of the Crystal. ' Two points-the margin by which the Sailors sank the Saints-dropped our percentage from a likely.60 to an actual 40. And that's not good enough to keep old C.C. at bay. This is another week, however, so rushing in where the wise hesitate to step lightly, here's the "good oil" for Round 14. Our selections: Bankstown, North Shore, Newtown, Balmain and St. George. It may seem foolish to choose Bankstown over the Sailors, but is it? Bankstown beat Balmain, South Sydney and Vilests, when those sides, vere high up the ladder. There' was a three point loss to North Shore, and Bankstown failed against Newtown only in the last fe'" minutes. A pretty good record with which to face the T~rs who, although in second place, have only just scraped home against Balmain, Liverpool and St. George. Albeit Naval has the ability to rise to great heights. They also have been responsible for some very poor displays this season. It will be an interesting game, and will probably be decided across the centre. We think Bankstown has the centre line to win. SHERRIN, FAULKNER, CARNIVAL BALLS SPECIAL "SHORTS, BOOTS, HOSE Easts and Norths, at Erskineville, and we,select Norths because they've now developed greater stamina and team work. They won well over Easts in a trial ga::ie, and defeated them in competition also. Wests beat Basts by two points and Norths won well from Wests. There is greater drive in Norths' attack, and their rucks are winning well. The Premiers, making a determined bid for their eighth successive Pennant, must not be taken lightly. They are still a force to be reckoned v. -ith, and if they gain an early break will be very hard to overhaul. Tl:teir teamwork has improved vastly, and they have the players to capitalise any scoring /chances that come along. It sht;mld develop into a good game, and; the testing.time might well be the.final quarter. Souths and Newtown gives promise of a game of clever football, with hard physical clashes the order of the day. Despite their loss to Balmain, Souths are much better than they showed last week. Foolish presentation of frees in front largely contributed to Souths' downfall. They have pace, vigour and. stamina, and if they gain an early lead, as they did against Sydney-Naval, they could have Newtown battling hard au day., The 'Towns, well.in the fight for the four, recovered last week to show that their inglorious displays against Naval and Easts were lapses that could not be explained. They went right to the finish, and at Head~ quarters should be able to win over Souths. Ne,vtown can be expected to exploit their own style of play onback up, football-that has spelt. de- ",., BANKS ~?j~~f.&'lf.&lco::::"'l~~f.&'l~fe:?lt..-?jto:;;:";t",::?)fe:?lf.&lf.&lf.&liq)~~iq)!dl(o)te:?l!o:::?lc&~ ~. ~ ~ CHADWICK & AVERY ~ ~ 456 ANZAC PARADE, KINGSFORD ~. ~. ~ ~ SPECIALISING IN ALL SMASH AND INSURANCE WORK ~ ~ PANEL BEATING, DUCO SPRAYING, CHROME AND ~ ~ FILLING EXPERTS ~ ~ ALL M E C H i:/~\ CAL W 0 R K ~ ~ FF 4010 :: FF 4010 ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ COMPETITION TABLE FIRST GRADE W.
