1 Tawa Rugby Football Club Weekly News 22 March 2018 Well another season has stealthily crept up on us like Lightning!! As you get older it.. well let s not go there. We left Sunny Tawa at 1230 (okay a few minutes after that) with a lot of new faces in the Premiers. Arrived at Awakairangi Park to bits of Sun and a cold wind. The wind was a straight left to right across the field we played on and as we arrived our Premier Firsts were changing to have the relatively strong breeze in their face. So easily could have been a win. The Premiers got off to a dream start with a win against MSP. Once again our Boys played into a strong breeze that even got a little stronger as the half went on. The MSP first five, Filo (thought he had retired) got MSP well back into the game. His reading of the game is exceptional. It is the measure of a Team when the Bench comes on and nothing changes with regard to game plan, attacking the ball, defence and general play. This weekend is the first Formula One Grand Prix for the year in Melbourne. This time last year I was in Melbourne for the GP and what an event! In the meantime the Supercars have had their first race in Adelaide (I was up there last year as well) with a Holden clean up. The new ZB Holden has hit the track Winning! At the GP Meeting this weekend, the Supercars will have a points race for the first time. As some of you Readers are aware, I travel to Wanganui every Boxing Day for the Annual Cemetery Circuit Motorbike Racing. This year saw the first ever (at Wanganui) Electric Motorbike race at the Cemetery Circuit. The Bike raced in the prestigious Robert Holden Invitation Race coming 4 th or 5 th. I said to my Mate, Tad mark my words, there will be at least 4 Electric Bikes racing here next year. We are in agreement. The torque out of the corners was almost as good as Tolu on a charge ball in hand. This weekend we have Ories at Home. Future front row?

4 Premier Opponent: MSP Location: Awaikarangi Park Date of Game: 17 March 2018 Final Score: Tawa 35 MSP 29 Point Scorers: K Kelemete(2) T Maiava, T Logovae J So'oialo(Tries) J So'oialo (5) (Con) Player of Day: Kalim Kelemete Coach: Vice Saletele, Doug Fletcher, & Damien Rapira-Davies Manager: Paul & Kelvin Holbrook Match Report: The start of the 2018 Wellington Premier Club Rugby Campaign and a trip to Awaikarangi Park to face the might of MSP. A cloudy breezy day and some fresh new faces in The Tawa line up. Tawa played with a strong Northerly but MSP domianted play early and camped in the Tawa half. After 8 minutes the MSP livewire openside flanker James Tuia crashed over to score. The conversion flagged away and MSP led 5-0 Over the rest of the half despite MSP having long periods with possession and territorial advantage it would be Tawa whom would strike with 4 converted tries. 15 minutes- deep in Tawa 22 and PJ Iosefo kicked ahead and Tom Maiava (winger on debut)raced downfield to scoop the ball out of the overcast skies and a step the last defender and raced away for a spectacular try. James(Samoan Superboot) So'oialo makes no mistake from in front Tawa 7 MSP 5 18 minutes MSP try to run from their 22 and Kalim Kelemete(2 nd 5) intercepts to score James converts from out wide. Tawa 14-MSP 5 22 minutes MSP guilty again of a loose pass and that man Kelemete is racing is for his 2nd. James on target Tawa now 21-5 up 40 minutes from an attacking line out in the MSP 22 and Tawa drive over and the Samoan Destroyer Tavita Logovae is dotting down for the bonus point Tawa try. James raised the flags from the sideline and Tawa head to the break with a commanding 28-5 lead over a stunned MSP. So an impressive first half with the Tawa pack in dominant form. MSP are a proud club with a rich history and the inevitable fightback was always going to happen. 44 minutes The stylish MSP Fullback Andrew Wells finished off a sweet MSP back movement The kick flagged away Tawa 28 MSP Minutes. A searing break from the Tawa Fullback PJ Iosefo as he carved up the MSP backline and James So'oialo in great support to power over under the sticks. James converts his own try Tawa ominously up MSP fightback commences. 65 minutes Kerrod Foese the diminutive MSP Winger wriggles over to score the try unconverted but now Tawa 35 MSP minutes - Ryan Saunders pacy MSP Winger sprints in for another MSP try. Wells finally converts Tawa 35 MSP 22

5 78 minutes Saunders is over for a brace of tries and Wells converts again Tawa 35 MSP 29.The Tawa supporters can t believe the scoreline and nervous tension over the final few minutes. Tawa finally get their hands on the ball and grind out the victory as Ref Nick Hogan blows for full time. So a great start to the Swindale Shield but we need to learn to play for the full 80 minutes. The club is looking in great shape for a successful season but much hard work ahaed on the journey to success and silverware. Thanks to our President Alan Davidson who drove us to and from the game. The boys enjoyed the beers at Clockwork after the game too. Catch you at Lyndhurst Park next Saturday as we welcome the mighty Ories magpies. Lets pack the pack and cheer on the boys. 6 FA M I L Y + R U G B Y = T R F C Last year we started to capture the families of TRFC. We have just had our first one for 2018, The Preston family. If you are keen to have your family featured let Amy or Jun (photographer) know before or at the Premier or Premier Reserve game. The best time to get a photo is after team photo at the end of the game. Look forward to seeing more TRFC families. PRESTON
