Tawa Rugby Football Club Weekly News 2 May 2017 Another notch in the belt for our Premiers on their march to a representation in the top eight and on to a Jubilee Cup second round. Another convincing win by the Premiers and the Premier Firsts. But to be fair, Avalon are a shadow of their past. Bit of a shame, but still attainable given some commitment and fitness. In the meantime both of our teams are becoming more slick in their overall play making and I like the out wide play. We are one of the few teams I have seen in the competition working the Wingers and outside backs. It really is a simple game and when the basics come together, then so do the results. Murray Mexted, Tawa RFC Life Member had a real good article in the DomPost last Thursday 27th April. If you are a Rugby Fan, a Club Rugby person and a Wellington Lions fan, you should get a copy and read what Murray said. Personally I agreed with the whole article, especially the pathway for club members to get to the provincial team. Club Rugby is the crux of this great game in our Country and results speak for themselves. The shortcuts of very young (and inexperienced) players bypassing the natural ascendancy in our game has indeed been a major factor in the Capital of New Zealand having a second division Team. Murray said it, I read it, I think you should read it but is anyone going to take it a bit more serious. I would like to think that Chris Gibbes gets some time to see Club Rugby prior to making decisions, although I am sure Andre Bell will be on the case. Well here's hoping. The Lions have to get out of the second division! & 3rd. On to Motorsport. Hamilton came 4th in Russia Formula 1 with team-mate Bottas getting his first ever win and Ferrari 2nd Indy Car racing was in Phoenix with Scott Dixon coming in fifth. However, Dixon is still in 2nd place on the points table. Consistency is the key in all sports. This weekend is a tougher game at home when the Eagles land at Lyndhurst. HOBM is fourth on the Premier table and 1st on the Prem Reserve table making for a tough day at the office, but our Boys are looking sharp. Managers Needed We are still looking for a manager Colts and the Woman s team, they would be really grateful if some volunteers could step forward and help out. No experience necessary. Please contact Fats if you are interested in being part of the team.

Premier Opponent: Avalon Location: Fraser Park Date of Game: 29 April 2017 Final Score: Tawa 48 Avalon 10 Point Scorers: F Vea(3) P Patafilo,J Boyd,PJ Iosefo,T ioane,l Cummings(Tries) L Cummings(4)(Con) Player of Day: Folau Vea Coach: Doug Fletcher,Shaun Treeby & Vice Saletele Manager: Collen & Greg Stanbridge Match Report: Round 8 and a visit to Fraser Park to take on the Avalon Wolves. Despite their lowly position on the table they always play with heart and a never say die attitude. The 3rd game in 7 days would test the fitness levels of all players. A gloomy wet day that would not inhibit an open game with 10 tries being scored interwoven with a lot of handling errors, turnovers, ineffectual kicking and reset scrums. Tawa kicked off and our light mobile pack soon gained ascendency over the bigger Avalon forwards. After 7 minutes our powerful young no 8 Folau Vea crashed over. 1 st 5 Luke Cummings could not convert Tawa 5 Avalon minutes -Avalon strike back and from a quick tap and strategic kick & the home sides 2 nd 5 Dylan Reece dotted down A wayward conversion. Tawa 5 Avalon minutes - Folau barges over for his 2 nd try after the Tawa pack rumble into the Avalon 22 with a series of pick and goes. Luke missed the extras Tawa 10 Avalon minutes- On the stroke of half time Tawa have 3 successive 5 metre scrums and eventually Folau controlled the ball as the pack steamrolled ahead and the try a formality for the Tawa no 8 and a hattrick for Folau to cap off an impressive 40 minutes. The conversion flagged away Half Time Tawa 15 Avalon 5. A scappy first 40 minutes and the Tawa faithful hoping for a better 2 nd half performance. Tawa quick to strike after the break. 44 minutes- Pepesana Patafilo with pace and a swerve streaked away to score our bonus point try. Another kick missed Tawa 20 Avalon 5.

50 minutes-another Pepesana break and Jono Boyd(Half Back) raced in to score. Luke gets the radar zoned in and converts Tawa 27 Avalon minutes Tawa rampant and we sweep onto attack and on debut PJ Iosefo scores Luke converts Tawa 34 Avalon minutes -Avalon take advantage from some Tawa illdiscipline and Recce is over for his 2 nd try. The conversion astray Tawa 34 Avalon minutes- Tawa gain control and Luke caps off a solid game with a fine try. He nails the kick Tawa 41 Avalon minutes - the final scoring action as Tito Ioane(Pacy Tawa Lock) raced in to score try no 8 Luke converts. Final score Tawa 48 Avalon 10. So a satisfactory result and 5 points banked and no more dreaded injuries. Not a perfect performance but a physically challenging week completed with 3 wins secured. Tawa now 7 th on the ladder with 5 more matches to play 2 more wins should ensure a Jubilee cup spot. Games to follow HOBM(h) Poneke(a) Pare Plim(a) Upper Hutt(a) Wainui(h). Next up back to our spiritual home of Lyndhurst Park and the HOBM Eagles will visit with a powerful lineup. See you all there to cheer on the boys Tavita Proud & Passionate and Yellow Red & Blue Bloodied Tawa Supporter

Premier Reserve Opponent: Avalon Location: Fraser Park Date of Game: 29 April 2017 Final Score: Tawa 43 Avalon 10 Yellow Cards: None Coach: Thomas George & Alfred Pelenise Manager: Mark Cooper Match Report: 3 games in 7 days, yup you read that right (I think the rugby union think we are lean, mean mechanical unemployed robots), but the boys were up to the task, we had lost 1 and won 1, so we were desperate for that 2 nd win, but in our way was a team we knew that had nothing to lose, Avalon. Not knowing if we were playing on their turf, we were prepared for grass rugby as well, and it brought back horror memories for 1 of our props, who thought he was Shaun Johnson from the NZ Warriors and tried to step his way through an Avalon team 3 years ago and ended up with a bung knee, but we now call him Foran, after pulling his hamstring during warm up 4 weeks ago, no names but it rhymes with Billy Chuchani. It was a wet but warm overcast day, the boys were fizzing to go after a good warm up only to find out Avalon had 3 front rowers and 1 reserve, but that didn t stop us, we started off slow with silly mistakes that were bound to happen with a wet slippery ball, again the forwards stepped up and scrummed well gaining crucial tight heads that lead to 1 spectacular try, after beating several defenders from our very own Stevie Wonder, Tyrone Tanuvasa, he helped send Pikau down the sideline to score, Avalon had given up and had to throw the towel in, so we had to resort to Golden Oldies scrums, but that was after our forwards had pushed their scrum back 10 meters to set up our no. 8 Na 'Akira or Reiko' Ione. Yet again we were playing with a new backs combination, but was good to see the backs running hard and hitting holes when they weren't running block lines for our 1 st 5 (no names but it rhymes with Chazz) to run behind, good meters were made by Sa 'Steven' Luatua. Alfred let s go to Clockworks Pelenise, Peni jelly bin Faletolu, Chris Hulk Nelson, Pikau I play halfback Arthur and his older but smaller brother Aaron I play halfback too Arthur, Unlike Avalon we had the luxury of 7 fresh reserves who added much needed spark, with tries being scored by Andy dude you got a tattoo Tilo and Levi No I m Hulk, not Chris Nelson Faamau, Regardless of the score Avalon were a strong team, with some big boys and never gave up, so full credit to them, was good to see our old mate Ezra I play lock now, cos I can t sprint Fermanis back playing and Malachai I ve never played rugby before Ah hoi gaining more confidence in the game. Special mentions to Pj & Evan on your Prems debut and to Toa and Lorenzo on your recalls into the prems>

See you guys next week at Lyndhurst The Jungle Park next week as we take on HOBM. Congrats Shaun no back Treeby on playing for the Stormers. Chur to the chur Masi Thomas George Coach

Colts Opponent: Upper Hutt Location: Maidstone Park 2 Date of Game: 29 April 2017 Final Score: Tawa 29 UH 12 Point Scorers: Broadus Melvin (2), Fata Silva, Dre Melvin 1 try 2 convs Player of Day: Fata Silva, Seren Marsh Coach: Petaia & JT Manager: Any volunteers? Match Report: Our boys started slow with some lethargic running and not engaging with the program at the start, the result was Upper Hutt scored 2 easy tries in the first 10 minutes of the game. That seemed to spark our boys into action and the big hits and slick passing started to eventuate. Our forward pack started dominating against a much bigger opposition giving our backline some much needed space to score some good tries. Broadus who ran hard all day dented the defense at will and Seren playing his first full game for us gave some good service from halfback. Fata was sensational at 7 and the leadership from Jonty and Dre kept the boys calm as the game threatened to escalate to a fist fight at times due to Upper Hutt being frustrated by our defense and ball running. Good win boys but it s only a start. Petaia Coach First Grade Opponent: Avalon Location: Lyndhurst Park Date of Game: 29 April 2017 Final Score: Tawa 25 Avalon 17 Point Scorers: Try Scorers Geoff Topeto, Teina Cooper, Iona Atoni, Con 2 and Pen 2 Ricky Blunsdon Player of Day: Jesse Green Coach: Steuart Ogilvie, Mone Vitale, Hillary Stowers Match Report: Another slow start allowed Avalon to get a bit of steam up and score the first try from some good driving up the middle of the park. Tawa responded and spent most of the first half in Avalon half only to be suckered with another try. Tawa kept pace with a couple of penalties and broke through with a strong try to go into the second half leading Tawa then took control and scored two tries from driving mauls close to the line from lineouts. Taking a commanding lead. A late try brought Avalon back close and put pressure on to Tawa in the last 10minutes. Team put in strong performances throughout the team, Jesse man of the match for his continual strong tackling throughout the game. Teina made significant contribution through his strong carries. Second half impact players made a significant impact to the game and added impact off the bench to clinch the match. Well done boys, carry it on to next week Steuart Ogilvie Coach

Presidents Opponent: Paremata Plimmerton Location: Ngati Toa Domain 2 Date of Game: 29 April 2017 Final Score: Tawa 45 PP 5 Point Scorers: Tries: Normie 1, Lakes 2, Dave Mc 1, Gordy 3 Conversions: Gaz 3, Normie 1, Gordy 1 Player of Day: Sammy for 20m carry Manager: Fonzy Match Report: The Pressies travelled to Paremata and got a great game in before the rain. We carried on where we left off last week running in only 7 tries this time. Pare-Plim forwards manned up and contested well but they needed a backline that let them down. They were unlucky not to score in the 1 st half but for Mr Happy repelling them with his ribs. However, they did score eventually thanks to Gordy being taken out without the ball but the ref deemed it legal with a bit of 'banter'... Thanks to Kamati the reff, he controlled the game well and created good spirit amongst the boys. Fonzy Manager Premier Steward Baird
