1 Tawa Rugby Football Club Weekly News 26 May 2016 Leaving Tawa early on Friday, I was on a mission to watch Poneke beat Upper Hutt at the Stadium as a Curtain-raiser to the Hurricanes vs Highlanders match. Whilst they certainly played the Curtain-raiser, it was not the outcome Tawa needed. Our Teams in both top divisions beat Paremata-Plimmerton and got the required points. Now the heat is really on for this weekend s game against Norths. There are five teams on the edge for points to remain in the jubilee Cup. I recall Tawa being under similar pressure at Frazer Park trying to avoid relegation in one of the most nail biting games Tawa Supporters have ever been through. We took the game against worthy opponents that day, but it was the day a lot of Tawa Supporters aged! Are we up for it? Can we do it again? --- Of course we can, but we need to front up, be focused and keep the intensity for 80 minutes. We are also playing for the coveted Sam Sa ili Trophy. This is not a Trophy we will let go easily. Sam was a mentor to a number of our young men in our Club, especially in the front row. In fact, one of Sam s protégés was in the Clubrooms on Saturday Taniella Koroi. Taniella was home for a couple of days before heading to Fiji to take part in the Tournament between Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and Georgia. Rest assured we will be watching our Boy. Another old Boy seen in the Club after the game was Nigel Hunt, home from France for a short time. At the after match function, we welcomed Allan & Gavin from the Cornish Pirates the Club Chris Stirling was at. We also had ex All Black, ex Hurricane and ex Wellington Lions man John Schwalger in our Club. John is the RDO for Pare-Plim. Indy 500 was run on Monday morning with an Alexander Rossi, a Rookie winning the 100th event. Scott Dixon, Kiwi and 4 times winner finished 8th. This weekend is the Battle of the Bridge against Norths. It is also their Old Timers Day and Jerry Collins unveiling. What more motivation would you want? And that is outside of the fact that Norths is one of the sides I alluded to in the first paragraph. Ardie Savea is possibly the in form Flanker in the Country at the moment. Totally deserved to be called up in the All Black squad naming on Sunday. But what a game on Friday night. Our Boys had clearly moved on from the Final last year and concentrated on the game in hand, as they should. At 20 all, I suggested to Andy Leslie and Norm Hewitt that the score was a fair reflection of the game. They both agreed, but the Canes had their own script as to how it was going to play out. Awesome result and a great crowd of just under 20,000. The Crusaders had a very good win against a Blues side needing to find their way. But what happened to the Chiefs? There will be some soul searching going on at the debrief. Supporters, we need you!! This Saturday is going to be a tough one and you can rest assured that Norths will have their vocal Supporters. Let's make it huge Tawa, and show the colours for our Boys. Allan G. Davidson Club President

A visit from our Northern neighbours Pare-Plim in a must win game for Tawa. Another wild and wet week preceded the game but Tawa Rugby's spiritual home (Lyndhurst Park) stood up to the heavy saturation. Overcast and a light Northerly breeze greeted the teams as they ran onto the lush field. Tawa looked focused and quickly took control with superior power and pace against the plucky Pare-Plim. An early break by the powerful Tawa no8 Peniasi and fed our diminutive Japanese Half back Kenta whom raced over to score. Randall kicks the side-line conversion 6 minutes played Tawa up minutes-tawa surge into the opposition 22 and our blockbusting flanker Ato bashes through to score. Tawa repel and attack and at 75 minutes Peniasi (the Fijian Freight Train) barges over to score. Randall converts Tawa minutes Tawa time for 1 more try and a simple touchdown for replacement 1st 5 Kalim. Randall another beauty from out wide for his 9th Conversion Full time Tawa 68 Pare -Plim 0. A comprehensive victory and 5 valuable points but Pare-Plim gusty in defeat. What a climax in store with the final round of Swindale Shield next week. OBU, Ories Wellington, MSP and Wainui are safely in the Jubilee Cup. Norths Poneke, Upper Hutt & Tawa will battle it out for the remaining 3 spots. Poneke away to MSP, Upper Hutt at home to Petone and Tawa a short trip to Porirua to face local rivals Norths. What a match up with Norths. Their Old Timers Day and Jerry Collins unveiling, & the Sammy Saili Trophy at stake and a victory will earn a spot in the Jubilee Cup. To the loser a nervous wait on other results. Certain to be an emotionally charged atmosphere with both sides and their passionate supporters..you won t want to miss this blockbuster. See you all at Jerry Collins stadium to cheers on the mighty Tawa. Finally it was great to see 2 of Tawa's favourite sons at the clubroom Saturday Taniela(Kava Kid) Koroi back for a few days and soon to return to Fiji to play in some International fixtures. Nigel Hunt( currently playing for Grenoble in France and former NZ 7,s, BOP & Lions Rep)! Tavita Passionate & Kava quenched Tawa Fanatic
5 Premier Reserve Opponent: Paremata Plimmerton Location: Lyndhurst Park Date of Game: 28 May 2016 Final Score: Tawa 32 Pare-Plim 17 Player of Day: Elijah Brooking (3 points) Tuhan Tauira (2 points) Tyrone Tanuvasa (1 point) Coach: Duncan Kirk, Ed Felix & Vice Saletele Manager: Nua Finau Match Report: This was always a game we knew we could win if we played to our strengths. Pare-Plim came out hard as we knew they would and caught us off guard with some quick ball movement and committed play by their forward and deservedly got the first points of the game with a try. We didn't get off to the best start and some lack lustre defence was punished early but a stern word under the posts from the leadership boys must've done the trick as we quickly got in to gear and replied with a quick try to our hard working prop Fili Tusani to level the scores. Once the scores were tied up, the boys got in to their work and started to build pressure and it wasn't long till the young man Elijah Brooking fresh from his trip to Aussie was busting tackles up the middle giving Tawa solid punch in the backs with his midfield partner Alfred Pelenise. Tawa could sense the panic and Tyrone Tanuvasa capitalised with a great individual effort to score a 50 meter run away try. At the half some stern words were given to the boys from Thomas George to keep at their work and set the platform before trying the flashy stuff as Tawa were guilty of trying to score of first phase after establishing a comfortable lead. The second half was a lot better as Para Plim were relentless in attack with all guns blazing trying to penetrate the Tawa defence but the lads held strong and put a stop to numerous raids on their line. Tempers flared and the ref was having none of it dishing out two yellow cards. Tawa spent much of the second half on defence and will take a lot of confidence in how they defended. The little ball they did get they managed to break out and score tries which kept the score board ticking over. In the end Tawa won comfortably and will head in to the local derby with Norths confident of notching up another 'W' and keeping their winning momentum heading in to the second round. Nua Finau Manager
6 Presidents Opponent: Norths Red Location: Porirua Park 2 Date of Game: 28 May 2016 Final Score: Tawa 49 Norths 7 Point Scorers: Trys; Ian 1, Silva 1, Holi 1, Colslaw 1, Gordy 1, Paul 1, Cory 2,Si 1 Cons; Nate 1, Colslaw 1 Player of Day: Cory -super sub scoring 2 trys Coach: Fonzy Manager: Fonzy Match Report: The long anticipated 'Clockwork Gold Cup' match v Norths Red was played out at Porirua Park 2, in surprisingly good conditions despite heavy rain showers before and after the match. They have been formidable opponents for the challenge since its conception 4 years ago by Gary Hathaway owner of 'Clockwork Gold'. We prepared well and turned on a determined performance to retain the cup The score wasn t a good indication of the game as the forward clash was as even and brutal as ever. The difference was as well as matching their forwards and eventually gaining a bit of ascendancy our backs took almost all their opportunities with accuracy, superior pace and countered Norths backs with gutsy defence. Thanks again to Gary and his team for their hospitality and generosity at 'Clockwork Gold'...special mention to 'e man' for his presentation of the cup at Norths Club rooms. Fonzy Coach
