This involved: Establishment of Coaching manual; Appointment of Coaches; 2015 Game plans for each team through facilitation meeting conducted by AFL Coaching Co-ordinator David Sheridan; Regular meeting of coaches throughout the year; Practice match venues and teams; Pre-season training venues and allocation of teams/times; Representation of BJFC at YJFL Coaching Co-ordinators meetings; Alternative venues for wet weather Assessment of Coaches (2017) by third party provider to provide feedback.

5 Coaching experience Past eight (8) seasons, very successful (74% win/loss)- All players and Everyone enjoyed the experience. The number of junior players that Ross & I have coached throughout the past 8 years has been modest at some 60 players. A core group of 32 players that played 2-8 years of football. This represents a low turnover and high satisfaction from both players and parents. 5

6 Match day what have they been taught? Routine and warm up Three messages keep it simple Statistics what are the KPI s? tackles, 20 handballs per quarter gives players a reference point. Huddle and switch from the backline; Concentration is a key factor 6

7 Match day what have they been taught? Man on man and accountable football; Concept of dangerous space ; Stoppages & boundary throw in s i.e. set ups, where do onballers stand? How do you beat a left handed ruckman? On ballers to assist backline but stay out of the forward line. Humble in victory, gracious in defeat respect for the opposition. 7

9 Level 2 AFL - Coaching philosophy To teach and develop the younger players in preparation for their eventual transition into for senior football club. This involves a thorough education program which is more than just training and game day experience. Further this involves more than just football related skills, but mental preparation (concentration) is vitally important, as is respect for the opposition. Our professional ethics of honesty, openness & professionalism in representing clients, managing staff, and conflict resolution also applies to the coaching of players and the leadership of parents. We will not refrain from this approach. 9

10 Coaching philosophy Ross & I see football clubs as being great learning environments where players, coaches and parents can expand their knowledge and understanding of football, sport, health and well-being. I have used outside experts in the speaking to parents and players of the club on topics such as diets, game day preparation, through to anxiety and depression related illnesses. I intend to keep with this approach to make this club a learning club. We intend to ensure that respect from the players and parents extends throughout the Club to facilitate a positive club culture which will be attractive to new parents and players. 10

11 Respect for your players will go a long way to extracting their best performance or commitment to training. One on one advice is about tutoring your player to give them tools, information to be a better player. We intend to keep on providing advice and feedback to individual players, (which will include all players), on a regular basis. This will ensure they know and understand where they sit in terms of their performance and skill level. Our objective is to continue to operate a coaching panel to identify and offer solutions to football and coaching issues as they arise. We do not have all the solutions, and we will want to develop the players as advocates and problem solvers for their team. This will be completed in a participatory environment. 12 Coaching philosophy We will continue to provide the Senior Coach & Committee of both junior and senior clubs with up to date progress reports (Director Coaching) on the development of the junior teams. This will build on trust by proving a consistent communication and feedback loop. Our relationship with parents and players will be facilitated by the generation of coach s reports specific to my team, weekly match reports and at the end of the season (report to AGM). 12

13 We will continue to develop a game plan for the U19 age group, which will build incrementally as the team progresses. This will be completed with all other coaches through the Coaching Panel so that a Senior & BJFC curriculum will extend from Junior to Senior football. Coaching philosophy 13

14 Coaching philosophy We will continue to provide alternative training venues, training programs to break up training routines to keep players fresh and make training fun. In our roles as coaches we will continue to share the duties of coaching (responsibility, success and failures of the team). We will continue to engage with parents, players and Leadership Group & Captain of the U19 playing group for their input throughout the year. 14

15 Conclusion Coaching AFL football Its about fun, providing leadership (as a coach & for players) and learning. Its about team work, relationships and how this experience will shape and influence their lives and future opportunities in life. At the U19 level it is about making the transition from junior to senior football through learning from adversity, being prepared for team selection by merit and strengthening mental discipline. As a coach it is also providing the players with a positive male role model, as another reference point in their lives. 15

16 After 290 games now we had won together It is always hard changing something you are used to. I moved from West Coburg Football Club to the Brunswick Dragons at the start of this year. I didn t know many people apart from the other boys who switched clubs with me. I felt uncomfortable at the beginning of the season not being in the club I was used to. But that soon changed thanks to friendly teammates, kind parents and an awesome coach. I had many unforgettable moments this year but the one that I will never ever forget is winning the Grand Final. The night before the game I could not sleep, the whole day anxiously thinking about the game ahead of me. The thought of me actually playing in a grand final was surreal but winning it is beyond my wildest dreams. It was also good that I could win a Grand Final with my Dad. He has played, coached or been an official for about 290 games and had never won a Grand Final before. Now we have won one together. I will treasure that day for the rest of my life. Go Dragons! 18 Playing experience The September Specialist Senior games of which 224 in Major League Country Football (Division 1 Bendigo Football and Division 2 Tungamah & Alberton Football League). Played 21 finals games in 14 years, (across 16-year period & 93) Six (6) grand final appearances and 5 premierships. 1 x U18 (78) + 4 Senior (1980 St.Bedes VAFA, 84 Northern United BFL, 88 & 90 MDU Alberton). Interleague Alberton F.L & 1990 Played in major key positions of ruck, centre half forward & centre half back and full back. Senior B&F 1981 (St Kevin s Ormond, ESCFL) RU B&F 1988 (Meeniyan Dumbalk United, Alberton) recommenced playing with NOBSPC Club games. 18
