3 Lacrosse Game Rule Lacrosse game is a combination of basketball, soccer and hockey. The game requires coordination and agility. Lacrosse is played with a stick the crosse that needs to be used by the player to throw, catch and scoop the ball. Long sprints, precision passes and dodges this is the stuff the lacrosse game is made of. Lacrosse is different from other games in that it necessitates use of a netted racquet to pick the ball off the ground, throw, catch or convey it to score a goal. The cardinal lacrosse game rule is not to touch the ball with the hands. Introduction of a hard rubber ball in the lacrosse game was its first foray into modernization. Lacrosse took considerable period of time before it gained in popularity amongst the colleges of the U.S. Lacrosse featured as an Olympic sport in St. Louis in 1904 and this gave further impetus to the game. Lacrosse remained an exhibition event at the Olympics in President William Taft attended a lacrosse game in 1922 and this gave a fillip to the game that was still struggling to gain a foothold with other more widely accepted sports. In 1932, a record crowd of 80,000 witnessed a lacrosse match between Johns Hopkins University representing America and Canada. Lacrosse History Lacrosse history can be traced to the North American Indians. Early history of lacrosse shows that it was a training ground for young men for war and for settling disputes between tribes of America and Canada. The game was also played in Mexico, Tennessee and Maine. Lacrosse games would last for days on end. Trees or rocks were used to mark goals. Points were scored by hitting the goals with the ball. Various versions of the game emerged with different types of sticks. The non-native form of the lacrosse game also spread around the Montreal area. A Montreal based dentist Dr. William George Beers is described as the father of lacrosse in its present form. He created the Montreal Lacrosse Club in Within a decade, the game gained in popularity in Canada and an uniform code of rules for the Lacrosse game was created. Thus was born the Canadian National Lacrosse Association. The National Lacrosse League is the professional league for indoor lacrosse and Major League Lacrosse is associated with outdoor lacrosse. Doubling of youth memberships since 1999 indicate the growing popularity of the game. Lacrosse has now come into its own with more than 250, 000 active players in the Northeast of the United States. A lacrosse field is 110 yards long and can have a width of 53 1/3 to 60 yards. The lacrosse rule states that the goals are to be 80 yards apart with a playing area of 15 yards behind each goal. The length of the lacrosse field is divided into two by a centerline. The crease is an 18 feet diameter circle drawn around each goal. The goal area is a rectangular area surrounding each goal. Each lacrosse team has 10 players on the field and 2 substitutes. The four critical lacrosse game positions are Attack, Midfield, Defense and Goalie. The 3 attacking men play in form of the team trying to score a goal. The 3 midfielders act as offensive and defensive players. The lacrosse ball is white and made of solid rubber, with a inches diameter. An extremely hard ball, it must not be touched by the hands during the course of the lacrosse game. The crosse or lacrosse stick can vary from 40 to 72 inches in length and is generally made of wood, plastics, aluminum or titanium. The net on the lacrosse stick is usually made of leather, cord or nylon.

4 Men's Lacrosse Rules Men's lacrosse is a contact game played by ten players: a goalkeeper, three defensemen, three midfielders and three attackmen. The object of the game is to shoot the ball into the opponent's goal. The team scoring the most goals wins. Each team must keep at least four players, including the goalie, in its defensive half of the field and three in its offensive half Three players (midfielders) may roam the entire field. Generally, high school games are 48 minutes long, with 12 minute quarters. Each team is given a two minute break between the first and second quarters, and the third and fourth quarters. Halftime is ten minutes long. Teams change sides between periods. Each team is permitted two time-outs each half. The team winning the coin toss chooses the end of the field it wants to defend first. Men's lacrosse begins with a face-off. The ball is placed between the sticks of two squatting players at the center of the field. The official blows the whistle to begin play. Each face-off player tries to control the ball. The players in the wing areas can release; the other players must wait until one player has gained possession of the ball or the ball has crossed the goal line. Center face-offs are also used after a goal and at the start of each quarter. Players may run with the ball in the crosse, pass and catch the ball. Only the goalkeeper may touch the ball with his hands. A player may gain possession of the ball by dislodging it from an opponent's crosse with a stick check, which includes the controlled poking and slapping of the stick and gloved hands of the player in possession of the ball. Body checking is permitted if the opponent has the ball. However, all contact must occur from the front or side, above the waist and below the shoulders. An opponent's crosse may also be stick checked if it is within five yards of a loose ball or ball in the air. If the ball or a player in possession of the ball goes out of bounds, the other team is awarded possession of the ball. If the ball goes out of bounds after an unsuccessful shot on goal, the player nearest to the ball when and where it goes out of bounds is awarded possession. An attacking player cannot enter the crease around the goal, but may reach in with his stick to scoop a loose ball. FIELD DIMENSIONS AND POSITIONS
