Manning Youth Soccer: A History Manning Youth Soccer began over 10 years ago with the enthusiasm and guidance of Christian Joquerra. Originally the soccer program was offered for outdoor only. Then as time went on indoor soccer was also offered as preparation for outdoor. The following are a collection of photos and articles from the Banner Post Newspaper. Article from Banner Post April 4, Soccer Season Gets Underway Rita Phillips The Manning Soccer Club is getting their players ready for the upcoming season. The youth are practicing their skills indoors to prepare for the outdoor season. The youth aged 12 and under, are split into two groups to work on soccer drills and play scrimmage games. The soccer club started three years ago in Manning and has a full registration for this year. The players play indoors until early May when they can get out on the fields. The use the Manning Elementary School gym for practices and to store their equipment. Coach Ken Hamilton says that the players improve their hockey skills along with their soccer skills. They play teams from around the Peace Region. He says that Bonnie Paulovich was instrumental in getting the club started. She is on the executive this year along with Anastacia Jorquera, Kim Lambert and Byron Schram. MDFP [Manning Diversified Forest Products] and IGA both sponsor the club. The club is also starting an outdoor league for adults. Interested players can contact Bonnie Paulovich to find out more information.
Continued from page 1... As more players and parents got involved, equipment was purchased or donated. Some outdoor goals were made specifically for the Manning program and kept at Rosary School field. Indoor was held at Manning Elementary School. Some goals were made from PVC piping and stored in the gym. Pylons, pinnies, indoor balls were sponsored through donations from Manning Diversified Forest Products and others. Banner Post, June 27, 2001 Soccer Season Kicks Into High Gear in Manning Cheryl Beckett, BP Staff May 22, 2002 Soccer season officially kicked off on Thursday, May 16. Players, coaches and parents, gathered at the Paul Rowe field for their first practice. Two groups played on Thursday. The under ten age group practiced some of the basics before they got into a game. The under 14 and under 12 groups practiced together, running laps and drills before their scrimmage. The group was definitely ready to go when the game began. Soccer happens every Thursday evening at 6:30. Soccer stars At left, Samantha Brunn tries to outrun and outkick her competitors. Below, the 12 and 14 groups scrimmage during a recent soccer practice in Manning. Soccer happens every Thursday evening
Banner Post, June 12, Second memorial soccer tournament a success June 26, 2002 BP The second annual Christian Jorquera Memorial Soccer Tournament was held in Manning on Saturday, June 15 at Rosary School. The tournament is held in honour of Christian Jorquera who died two years ago and is largely responsible for the initiation and success of the soccer program in Manning. Six teams of boys and girls under 10 arrived in Manning for the tournament. The 120 kids were busy, even in the heat on Saturday. It was a great day for soccer, according to organizers, and an emotional day as well. Jorquera s mother, father, brother and sister were in attendance, with his brother acting as referee and his parents donating MVP prizes. Two Fairview teams came in first and second, with a Berwyn team in third. Prizes were awarded for MVP s for each game and each team. Organizers were pleased with the turnout and also with the support for the tournament. Many local businesses helped by donating prizes, time and equipment to set up for the tournament.
Manning tackles Peace River in Soccer Banner Post June 26, 2002 Manning s under 14 soccer team took on Peace River on Wednesday, June 19. The teams had met in Peace River on Monday, with Peace River coming out on top. Peace River took an early lead, going into the second half up 3 0. Manning scored its first and only goal in the second. Peace River scored three more; the final score was 6 1. The team is off until early in July. Banner Post May 26, 2004
Continued from page 2 In September of 2004 Ken Britton the coordinator and coach for soccer in Manning moved to Edmonton with the ATB Financial. At the same time Pastor Allan Gairns, arrived from Prince George, BC., to be the new minister at Saint John s United Anglican Church and he took on the soccer coordinator s position. Gairns had been playing soccer since 1983 in the Prince George Recreation League outdoor and indoor. He started coaching in 2000 and has a level 2 national coaching certificate. In Prince George his U12 boys teams had reached 3rd place in league and tournament play. In 2002 Gairns had a 1st place team in U12 and a 3rd place team in U14. It s been a bit of a struggle for soccer in Manning even before Gairns arrival as volunteers were falling off and competition with other sports for participants increased, but after two years of trying to field an outdoor soccer program, Gairns decided to focus on the indoor. The indoor program increased from grades 1-3 and grades 4-6 with 12 in each to, both age groups up to around 17 each, playing once a week October to April. It was difficult to get help with coaching. We were running Grade 1 3 s on Tuesdays and then Grade 4 6 (above) on Wednesdays after school until 5pm. Sometimes players would leave a half hour early to go to curling or hockey or even volleyball and tai-kwando. And later when Coach Allan became a Town Councillor ( ), he was having to leave early two Wednesdays a month for meetings. So, finding people to supervise and run practices was difficult...but some parents did come through and help Half time strategy session.

That Sunday morning we were encouraged by our performance against some more experienced teams. This is the team that won 3rd place in our age group. But, there are more players to be recognized that are not present who helped over the years by their participation to shape Manning Kickers 2010 into a winning team. 10 Continued from page 7 Over the past six years soccer has been growing in Manning and now a new group of parents have taken over the soccer program in Manning. Inspired by Kickers efforts and the need expressed by young children coming up an outdoor program for ages 5 to 8 was born this Spring 2010 under the care of Kerry Coulter and Kristi Nicklason. They had an excellent turnout with over 20 participants once a week. Also they put together a team and went to a tournament where all had fun and came back with awards. This Fall marks the re-organization of Manning soccer with the registration of the Manning Youth Soccer Association. With this new organization it is hoped to be eligible for various grant opportunities. Also, it is hoped the Indoor soccer program will continue and in the new year see the outdoor program to expand. In a favourite football movie of mine the coach is talking to his assistant coach after a devastating loss to a better team, he says: I agree its all about winning, [but not in our case], it s that we play the game. All the practicing that we do to get ready for that one tournament is about playing the game the way it should be played. When we go to the tournament(s) it will be great to celebrate a win but more importantly we should be celebrating the fact that we did the best we could to play the game of soccer. Having said that see below our winning team from 2010 Ernie s Rock Around the Clock Indoor Tournament: 2010 Manning Kickers Manning Kickers
