What to Bring to Tryouts The following forms and items will be collected at tryouts. Coon Rapids Cardinals Basketball Club Registration Packet Bring a completed and signed Player Registration Form to tryouts. To be eligible to participate in Coon Rapids Traveling Boy's Basketball, the player must be a resident of the City of Coon Rapids or attending a Coon Rapids school. Players Birth Certificate Bring a copy of the player's birth certificate to tryouts. Player Fees Due at Tryouts Check payable to CRTBC in the amount of $ (Registration fee) Check payable to CRTBC in the amount of $ (Uniform deposit) Check payable to CRTBC in the amount of $ (Volunteer deposit) Try Out Rules Tryouts are closed to the public - only the players, evaluators, and potential coaches/board members will be allowed in the gym. NO TRAVELING UNIFORMS will be allowed to be worn at tryouts. Players will be put through a series of drills and skill evaluations. These evaluations will be a combination of objective and subjective criteria.

Teams will be selected after the try-out date. Eight to ten players will be selected for each team, depending on the turnout for tryouts. Coaches will notify their players after all selections have been made. Pinnie numbers of the players will be posted on the website at Players must be residents of the Coon Rapids High School attendance area or live within the City limits of Coon Rapids. If an individual was not able to tryout due to an injury that prevented trying out, or due to a special circumstances of an absence he may be considered if the following guidelines are met: The player must have signed up to play with the CRCBC prior to try outs. The player must have notified the Board that he is unable to attend tryouts. Approval of the absence must have been granted by the CRCBC Board prior to tryouts. If the player previously participated in Coon Rapids Traveling Basketball, the player may be considered to play at the same level as they did the previous year with the current coach's and Board approval. In no case, may a player be moved up a level. We do NOT allow playing up at any age. The only exception is if we need additional players at a grade level and the grade level below has a sufficient number of players. Our policy of not allowing players to "play up" is a long standing policy and one that is strictly enforced. Our mission as a program is to help each boy learn new skills, encourage their best effort, discourage their poor efforts, and help them learn the value of teamwork. For the better players, it is very important for them to learn teamwork and to build their leadership skills. We would like all our teams to experience success and do no feel moving kids up a grade level while displacing a kid at their own age level is appropriate. Evaluations Each player will be evaluated on a combination of objective and subjective scoring by an impartial group of evaluators. Scoring/points breakdown Objective 20% Subjective 20%

Scrimmaging 60% Objective Criteria Mikan drill Traditional Mikan layup/hook shot drill where the player will alternate shooting from the right side and left side of the basket. Number of baskets recorded. Free Throws Each player will shoot 10 free throws. Number of shots recorded. Endurance Drill The players are timed how quickly they can run full court and back. Quickness Drill The player will shuffle back and forth across the lane and ranked on the number of times they can complete this drill in the allotted time. Zig Zag dribble The players are timed how quickly they can dribble the ball the full length of the court and back around cones. Scoring The scores are calculated and compared to the group as a whole. For example: If 20 kids try out, the player with the most points for each drill will receive a total of 20 points, second best (19) and so on. Using the example of 20 kids trying out; the best score for this section is 20 (5 drills times 20 points multiplied by 20%). Subjective Criteria Lay-ups (right) (Score 1-10) The players will be evaluated on their form for a right hand layup. Lay-ups (Left) (Score 1-10) The players will be evaluated on their form for a left hand layup. Rebounding drill (Score 1-10) The players will be evaluated on their box out technique, exploding for the rebound and overall rebounding skill. Shooting drill (Score 1-10) The players will be evaluated for shooting form and footwork. Scoring For each category, the player receives a score from 1-10 (10 is the best). The scores are calculated and compared to the group as a whole. For example, if 20 kids try out, the player with the most points for each drill receives a total of 20 points for that drill, second best (19)

and so on. Using the example of 20 kids trying out; the best score for this section is 16 (4 drills times 20 points multiplied by 20%). Scrimmage: After the drills (objective and subjective) are completed, the players will move to simulated games situations of 3 on 3 and 4 on 4 scrimmage session. The players are evaluated on the following four categories: Offensive Skills Offensive moves / fakes / drives Sets screens /off ball movement / transition speed Court sense / Team Play / Communication Shooting under pressure / Offensive rebounding Uses variety of passes / finds open player / passing accuracy / timing / crispness Defensive Skills Defensive stance / positioning / help defense Anticipation Overall pressure / aggressiveness Rebounding Rebounding position / outlet passing Goes for the ball Anticipates Game play Court sense Team play Attitude / Work ethic Speed / quickness Scoring For each category, the player receives a score from 1-10 (10 is the best). The scores are calculated and compared to the group as a whole. For example: If 20 kids try out, the player with the most points for each category will receive 20 points for this category, second best (19) and so on. Using the example of 20 kids trying out; the best score for this section is 48 (4 categories times 20 points multiplied by 60%). Team Selection For the 4th grade team only Teams will be split equally. The evaluators will arrive at a consensus as to the top ranked players and will list the next 4-6 players on the bubble for making one of the two teams.

The 4 th grade coaches will then decide which players among the bubble players should make the teams. After receiving input from the coaches, the evaluators and board members, the final determination of the 4 th grade teams will be made. For 5-8 grade teams The teams are divided into a RED team (plays A/B tournaments), a WHITE team (plays B/C tournaments), and a BLACK team (plays C tournaments). Each team will be comprised of 8-10 players. At each grade level, the top 6 scoring players will automatically make the Red team. The coach may select the remaining 2-4 players for the team out of the next top 8 scoring players (players 7 though 14). The players not selected for the Red team (with scores from 7 through 14) will automatically make the White team. The players not selected for the White team may make the Black team, if a Black team is approved by the Board. Each coach shall have the option to select one player from outside these guidelines as detailed in the try out rules.
