2016 Clontarf Foundation Clontarf s Working clontarf foundation Carnarvon Clontarf Academy 2015 graduates, Kristian Smith and Brayden Dowker, working hard in their full-time apprenticeships at Rio Tinto s Lake Macleod operations. These outstanding young men are serving as excellent examples to the younger boys coming through Clontarf s Carnarvon Academy by demonstrating what can happen when you are determined to create a better life for yourself.

Welcome to the 2016 Clontarf Employment Update Clontarf s Working has been produced to highlight the life changing impact that our partners support is having on numerous young men s lives. It also provides contact details for the Clontarf Employment Officers based in various regions. If you haven t already done so, please contact your nearest Employment Officer to explore opportunities to employ our graduates and/or to hear how you and your staff can participate in the other employment processes outlined in this document. The Clontarf Foundation exists to improve the education, discipline, life skills, self-esteem and employment prospects of young Aboriginal men and by doing so, equips them to participate more meaningfully in society. The Foundation also believes that the sense of purpose and financial independence afforded by employment is fundamental to alleviating the disadvantage experienced by successive generations of Aboriginal people. It follows, therefore, that the extent to which boys graduating from its programme are able to find meaningful jobs and keep them is the ultimate measure of Clontarf s success. At the end of this year, 411 of the 4,700 boys Clontarf currently has in its programme will complete Year 12 and then be seeking employment. In future years these numbers will continue to grow. The Federal and various State Governments have already agreed to provide two thirds of the funding needed to support 8,500 boys in the programme. Subject to our private sector partners being willing to provide the remaining one third, we are planning to reach the governments target number by the end of June Significantly, this will mean that by 2019 and for every year thereafter, more than 1,000 boys per year will complete Year 12 and enter the workforce. Clearly the Federal and State Governments willingness to almost double their financial commitment to Clontarf is both a vote of confidence in the programme and a tribute to the excellent work carried out by the 260 dedicated staff members who interact with the boys in the field. However, it is also a recognition of (and a tribute to) the efforts and invaluable support we have received over many years (and continue to receive) from our private sector partners, host schools, Indigenous communities and other stakeholders. This support goes well beyond the purely financial. Our private sector partners, in particular, provide jobs for our boys. In addition, by mingling with and interacting with partners and other stakeholders, our boys develop the social skills and confidence needed to tackle and succeed in the workplace. By hosting workplace visits, participating in Employment Forums and making available school based traineeships, our partners also help our boys increase their understanding of the opportunities available to them and learn how employers expect employees to behave and perform. Finally, (and vitally) informal, unstructured, fun packed activities with partners and others allow our boys to extend their spheres of social contact. This in turn, helps break down barriers and reduce stereotyping. My thanks to all the organisations and individuals who have supported us over the years, interacted with our boys and participated in the employment process. Your involvement is essential to our success and greatly appreciated. Finally, assuming we reach 8,500 boys, what then? It is estimated that more than 15,000 boys across the country need our programme. We dare to dream that one day, with your help, we will reach this number; and once we do, from then on 2,000 boys per year will complete Year 12, go on to further their education or find a job and by so doing, have a better life! That s when we ll all be able to take a breath and say that we re successful! Marcus Harrold General Manager Employment Office location: Perth mharrold@clontarffoundation.com.au

Current Locations The Foundation operates Academies in schools in 84 locations across WA, NT, NSW, VIC and QLD. Clontarf s full-time staff deliver a comprehensive programme that both attracts boys to school and creates the welcoming and supportive environment needed to keep them there. Current Academies 2015 Graduates Engaged in Employment or Further Training The 314 young men who completed Year 12 in 2015 have embarked on the next stage of their journey employment and/or further training. 257 either have jobs or are undertaking further study. We will continue to support those who are working or studying while at the same time keep working with the 57 jobseekers to help them find employment. Don t tell me the sky s the limit when there are footprints on the moon. - Paul Brandt Location # Grads # Engaged % WA % NT % VIC % NSW % QLD % Total %

Pathway to Employment Provided the specific circumstances pertinent to particular students, schools and potential employers allow its use, the best practice model set below helps partners engage with Academies and identify potential employees. Staff Engagement Use informal, unstructured, fun activities to break down barriers, reduce stereotyping and build positive relationships between students and partners. è Exposure to Potential Employers Use worksite visits and guest speakers to expose boys to partners businesses and potential jobs. Work Placement/ Part-time Employment Give boys a taste of the workplace environment by placing them in temporary jobs. Where appropriate, encourage boys to take part time jobs. (Both activities typically commence in Year 10). School Based Traineeships (SBTs) With the support of Clontarf staff, provide boys with School Based Traineeships. Where possible assist them to complete a Certificate II in the applicable industry. (The SBT model represents an ideal pathway to employment because it provides student and employer alike the opportunity to assess each other s suitability). è Full-time Employment è è Provided the previous steps have been followed, a smooth transition between school and full-time employment generally results. (Within this context, full-time employment should also be taken to mean a traineeship, apprenticeship or cadetship.)

Ways Our Partners Can Get Involved With The Boys Clontarf strives to provide its participants with opportunities to learn, develop new skills, practice them and build their confidence by interacting with new people and experiencing new situations and places. Worksite Visit Mock Interview Employment Forum Assist with Qualifications Resume Writing Guest Speaker Programme Mentoring Cadetship/ Scholarship School-Based Traineeship/ Work Placement Employment Advice/Tips Attend Camps, Trips and Activities Driver s Licence

Clontarf Employment News Worksite Visit Providing students with first-hand experience of the workplace. In August, the Swan Hill Clontarf Year 7 students got a taste of what workinglife is like, with a worksite visit to Clontarf Foundation partner Bunnings (part of the Wesfarmers Group). Six students were given an overview by the friendly staff that guided them throughout the store. Bunnings staff were very impressed with the way the fellas conducted themselves and asked some interesting questions. The worksite visit was followed by a BBQ back at the Clontarf Academy room, which the boys enjoyed. After their lunch, it was then time to put the new Bunnings products that had been donated into good use, by cleaning the Clontarf bus. Though some thought it was punishment at first, it turned out to be a great bonding session for all the boys. School Based Traineeship A great opportunity for our boys to experience the working environment before they graduate. Clayton Couley is loving life! The Dubbo Senior Academy member is almost halfway through his Certificate II - Mobile Plant Technology, undertaking the course via a School Based Traineeship (SBT) with Clontarf Foundation corporate partner GrainCorp. Clayton began the SBT at the start of the year as a Year 11 student and spends every Wednesday on site (and holidays where possible), gaining valuable firsthand experience into life as a Heavy Vehicle Mechanic. The best thing about work here at GrainCorp is the blokes that I get to work with. They are all really friendly and happy to let me have a crack at heaps of different things at work. I also really enjoy that I get to move around a lot. One hour I ll be in the workshop working on something and the next minute we ll get a call out to a site. Clayton is a talented footballer who has this year represented NSW country and the NSW Indigenous sides, however he understands how hard it is to make a career out of rugby league. I ve really enjoyed the diesel mechanic work so far, so I d like to continue on with that once I graduate Year 12 GrainCorp HR Partner Kristine Kone maintains that the feeling is mutual between Clayton and his colleagues. Clayton is a very popular member of the team. His work mates like that he is hard working and is not afraid to give anything a go. GrainCorp have been a great advocate for the SBT model taking on Clontarf Academy members for different roles in Dubbo, Moree, Coonamble and Wagga Wagga. School Based Traineeships and Apprenticeships allow us to train up school age employees so that when they have finished Year 12, they are able to enter the workforce and be effective and productive employees straight way. The Clontarf Foundation would like to thank GrainCorp for their continued support.

Clontarf Employment News University Student We support our young men whilst at university. From the picturesque expanse of the Kimberley to the bustling pace of city-life in Perth; Clontarf Academy graduate Thomas Chulung s high-achieving, adaptable and outgoing personality is seeing him reach new heights. Thomas grew up in Kununurra, spending the better part of his schooling life (Years 5 to 11) in and around the Clontarf Academy, forging lifelong friends and memories. Clontarf has obviously been a huge influence on my life; the friends and memories I ve created will be with me forever. Seeking the opportunities the city provides, in 2015 Thomas made the big decision to move to Perth to complete Year 12 at Clontarf Aboriginal College, boarding with young Aboriginal men from all over the state. From the get-go, Thomas took a leadership role amongst his peers including attaining 100% attendance and earning numerous educational awards (including Dux of his cohort) during Year 12. Wanting a taste of university-life before committing, Thomas has successfully completed a bridging course at Curtin University during the first part of the year. It was an interesting challenge being exposed to an environment with such a diverse range of cultures and nationalities. I think it s a good skill to have, as Australia is such a multicultural country, and so is the workforce. Thomas was recently accepted into the University of Western Australia to complete an Entrepreneurship - Bachelor of Commerce, which commenced in August. My driving force is my will to make something of myself I want to raise the standard, so my countrymen that are leaving school in the next couple of years will follow my footsteps. Full-Time Work The lives of our young men can certainly be changed dramatically if they have a full time job! Alex Hill has paved the way for many Clontarf Academy students to gain a great career in the future. The Warwick State High School, 2015 Year 12 graduate, was still not working months into 2016 when a friend phoned to say he wanted to travel the world when he finished university. Alex got to thinking he d like to join his mate. Clontarf Employment Officer, Marcus Priaulx, arrived at his house on the same day and they talked about Alex s dream. Marcus told him about hospitality courses which would enable Alex to work around the world in bars, cafes and restaurants. Days later, Clontarf partner Spotless Group rang Marcus to say they were looking to fill spots in their hospitality-cleaning team at a mining camp near Dalby, 200km north west of Brisbane. Alex was given the well-paid job that offers a Certificate III in Hospitality and has thrived ever since. We brought him on as a casual for fourfive hours a day and it was really difficult for him at first, Stephen Knott, the Spotless Contract Manager, QGC, said. Alex wasn t used to the fast pace at which we work and hadn t been doing anything for a while. Spotless buddied Alex up with a good working role model and he kept improving. We re very happy, Stephen said. He s doing really well, he s a good team player and seems to be really enjoying himself as well. Dalby Academy Year 12 graduate Eddie Gordon has since been hired and is going great guns. He s about to move into a tavern role within the same camp as Alex. In addition, Harristown Academy (Toowoomba) graduate Hayden Smith is about to be offered a job due to him enrolling in a Certificate III in Hospitality. We ll then be looking to bringing on another three boys as well, Stephen said.

Clontarf Employment News Part-Time Work At Clontarf we certainly actively encourage and support part-time employment. Working parttime develops some structured routines and good habits. There is a distinct Clontarf flavour at Kalgoorlie Kmart with three Goldfields Academy members, spread across three year groups, currently working at the store. Part of the Wesfarmers Group, Kmart is an important stepping stone for many of the Academy boys, with a number of them obtaining their first part-time job at the popular store. Year 12 student Remarli Bonney is joined by Calen Tullock (Year 11) and Edward Dabb (Year 9) who all proudly represent the Foundation, while working a variety of roles. Remarli and Edward both work in the decant section in the back of store, while Calen (who had his first shift in early September) works in customer service. Store manager Tracy Tirronen said the boys were a real asset to the store, which is located within the heart of the Kalgoorlie Central Business District. The boys are very enthusiastic and have brought a very positive energy to the store, she said. The other staff who work with them feel it, and I definitely think this is felt by the customers. They are all very organised and have excellent communication skills, picking up on things very fast and letting us know when they can and can t work. Remarli was the first student to start working at the retailer, beginning back in March and said it was a great way to learn the ins and outs of the workforce. It s a great first job as it helps teach me about what sort of things you need to do at work, as well as balancing that extra bit of responsibility, he said. Kmart is also great because they are very flexible, so if I tell them I can t work for family reasons, they are very understanding. Edward s enthusiasm for the role began after he was invited in for an interview. I was in Kmart looking for a costume for my little brother for his birthday party, he said. I asked one of the workers where the costumes were when I saw Tracy on her name badge. I said I was looking forward to my interview on Tuesday and I would see her then. Ms Tirronen said Edward had made a lasting impression on her from that very first encounter. I was on the floor and a young man came up to me saying he was really excited about Tuesday, she said. I asked what he meant and he said I had called him for an interview and proceeded to introduce himself full of confidence with a huge smile. From that moment I was sold.
