3 Fish: what is in the market? Fish represents approximately 15% of total protein consumed by humans worldwide Number of fish species is around 32,000, hundreds of which are commonly consumed Consumers preferences are cultural, and vary by region/country, but there are a few high value fish species Increase in the number of fish species in our markets
4 Fish: do we know what are we buying/eating? Seafood mislabelling a few examples work by S. Mariani group revealed that up to 25% of commercial COD samples can be mislabelled (Ireland) Smoked COD products revealed 70% of mislabelling 30% Hake was also found mislabelled in 2011 by Spanish researchers Oceana found 31% of seafood mislabelled in Florida: red snapper (86%), grouper (16%), white tuna in sushi (100%) A mako shark fillet, above, is often passed off as swordfish, top.
