Period Covered by this Report: From 06/01/2004 to G. Summary of Progress and Expenditures to Date: 1. Work Accomplishments: a. Tasks scheduled for this period: ~ Planning, Procurement, and Mobilization ~ Project Monitoring

~ Data Collection ~ Fish Tagging and Monitoring ~ Landscape Ecology ~ Publicity ~ Data Entry/Processing ~ Data Analysis ~ Photo documentation ~ Reports b. Tasks accomplished this period: Planning. Procurement, and Mobilization: A meeting was held on July 12, 2004 in Marathon to discuss the project and develop a work plan. In attendance were the Mote project group (Karen Burns, Brad Robbins, Nick Parnell, Pete Simmons, and Michelle Gittler), UF/Sea Grant collaborator Doug Gregory, NMFS collaborators Anne-Marie Eklund, Veronique Koch, and Dave McClellan, Art Gleason from the University of Miami, NMFS fisheries agent Ed Little, FWC agent Alejandro Acosta, and Don and Karen DeMaria. The meeting covered a variety of topics from the nuts and bolts of the upcoming project to. sampling logistics, information sharing,. and organizing and scheduling. Nick Parnell, Pete Simmons, and Michelle Gittler contacted the captain of the Greyhound V headboat and joined a day trip out to a hot fishing spot. Although the day was slow for target species (red grouper, black grouper, mutton snapper, greater amberjack, and cobia) the trip served as a meet-andgreet for the scientists and both the crew of the headboat and the patrons. The Greyhound V is now enlisted in our pursuit of target species for tagging and biological sampling. Project Monitoring: Project objectives are being accomplished, although researchers have had some set backs due to 5 hurricanes during this report period. Data Collection: A.. Age and Growth Otoliths from two black grouper were obtained. The largest black grouper (1435 mm) caught during the Cape Coral Grouper Grab, which was held on August 20, The second black grouper (1190 mm) was caught off of Venice on November 21, Both black grouper were sampled for comparison with the Keys black grouper. B. Reproduction Two black grouper ovaries were collected from the prementioned groupers. Both samples were preserved, but only the August sample has been sent to USM for processing. This sample has been embedded in paraffin and is awaiting sectioning and staining. Six freezers will be placed at various locations to collect additional black grouper gonads. The sites were chosen based on the number of black grouper landed at these locations. Freezer sites will include, The Tackle Box in Marathon, Reef Light Tackle in Big Pine Key, Lake Largo Marina in Key Largo, Hurricane Hole Marina in Key West and Holiday Isle Resort and Marina in Islamorada.

Fish Tagging and Monitoring: A total of 17 black grouper, 59 red grouper, 11 mutton snapper, 16 amberjack and 2 cobia have been caught, measured, tagged, and released by MML staff and newly recruited Florida Keys volunteer taggers during this reporting period (Table 1). In addition to the target species tagged, fish from five other species have also been tagged. They include; 12 gag, 1 nassau grouper, 1 goliath grouper, 1 graysby, and 1 rock hind. These data have been recorded and added to the database. The volunteer tagging program initiated in the Keys is taking off very rapidly; With the help of Doug Gregory in Key West, we are recruiting taggers and getting data back very consistently. To date Doug Gregory and MML staffhave issued tagging kits to 33 volunteers, of which 6 taggers are currently tagging and have tagged over 40 fish. Our plans are to continue promoting the tagging program. Doug Gregory (Sea Grant) and MML staff have called taggers to request that only target fish species (red grouper, black grouper, mutton snapper, amberjack and cobia) be tagged in the future. To date, one tagged red grouper has been reported as recaptured during this report period (Table 2). The first complete sampling trip was done during the week of 8/9/04 to 8112/04. Brad Robbins, Nick Parnell, and Pete Simmons headed back down to the Keys for field work. The first days stop was in the upper Keys, at Key Largo. The third day of sampling took the crew to the Mote Summerland field station. From Summerland the crew setout aboard a Mote vessel for targeted sampling of black grouper near Looe Key sanctuary. Unfortunately hurricane Charley was bearing down on Florida so the fishing, and the entire week of work, were cut short. The second complete sampling trip was done during the week of 11118/04 to 11122/04. Nick Parnell and Pete Simmons worked out of the Summerland Lab this time, focusing on tagging fish and sample collection. On the 19 th the pair headed out to American Shoals aboard the Mote vessel RlV Lady Lynne. The crew had anticipated using this trip to directly sample black grouper, however, due to inclement weather and a lack of target fish at the site, no samples were collected. Two days (20 th and 21 st).were spent working aboard the headboat Greyhound V measuring and tagging target species. Although no black grouper were caught a total of 8 gag and 22 red grouper were tagged and released, as well as 5 mutton snapper. Landscape Ecology: Habitat field work for the project was also initiated during the first trip ( /04) with the help of Doug Gregory and his personal vessel. From Doug's boat Brad Robbins was able to run some preliminary acoustical data collection with the echosounder and sidescan sonar. The crew also descended on several sites to get a real picture of what it was they were seeing on the monitor. During the first sampling trip (8/9/04-8/12/04) the Mote team met with U. of Miami collaborator Art Gleason for an acoustic sampling trip to Molasses Reef, off Key Largo. On the second day acoustic sampling was conducted in John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park aboard a NOAA

research vessel. Joined by NOAAINMFS-Miami collaborators Veronique Koch, Dave McClellan, and Shawn Cimilluca, the team ran acoustic tracks and dove several sites in the vicinity of Carysfort Reef. Excellent data were collected and dozens of pictures taken of the various habitats encountered. In addition, the team came across several black grouper and got some great images of them using reefs as shelter. During the 2 nd sampling trip, Nick Parnell and Pete Simmons employed a Mote vessel from the Summerland facility to get out to American Shoals, a known black grouper hotspot. Acoustic data was collected on this site using both the Biosonics echosounder and the sidescan sonar. High winds and large waves shortened the data collegtion, however, a preliminary look at this black grouper habitat was obtained. Publicity: Information regarding this project is being disseminated via our quarterly newsletter as well as on MML's website, In addition, Mote's Communication Department and Doug Gregory issued press releases and several articles were written, which appeared on line at the following website addresses: 109/li ving/liv03.prt monroe.ifas. ufl.eduijuly04 fish%20tagging.htm on the water/fisho 1.prt the water/fish03.txt In addition to the online articles, there were articles published about the project in various Florida Keys' newspapers including the Free Press (July 4 th ), the Upper Keys Times (July 13 th ), and The Reporter (July 23 rd ) entitled" New fish tagging and black grouper tagging projects coming to the Keys". An article entitled" Fish taggers needed in the Keys" was published in The Keynoter on July 10 th.. Numerous radio interviews were given by project staff, especially by Doug Gregory. On June 29 th Mr. Gregory discussed the project on WWUS FM 104.1's " Morning Magazine" talk show. Mr. Gregory gave a 3 minute interview on Upper Keys radio station WKEZ FM 96.9 during a news broadcast on July 9 th On July 13 t \ Veronique Koch (NOAAlNMFS/RSMAS) and Karen Burns were guests on the hour radio show" Roundtable with Jamie Hyman" on station WKEZ FM 96.9, which was arranged by Doug Gregory. Doug Gregory discussed the project again on WWUS FM 104.1's "Morning Magazine" talk show on July 13 th On July 22 nd, Doug Gregory was a guest and spoke for 15 minutes on WWUS FM 104.1's talk show, " This Week in Fishing in the Florida Keys". Mr. Gregory also arranged for a PowerPoint presentation about the project to be aired on the government access cable TV channel in Monroe County. The presentation began in July and continues being shown. Mote staff created posters to advertize the project. Tagging posters have been distributed to 20 marinas throughout the Florida Keys. Ten posters were also distributed to bait and tackle shops in the Lower Keys.

Data EntrY/Processing: Data (fish lengths, tag numbers, etc.) are entered into our database as acquired and the hard copies archived. This schedule is maintained for tagging and tag return data. A file of this data is included with this report.. Data Analysis: No major data analyses hav:e been conducted. Some of the data have been placed in table format for thenewsletterand the webpage. Photo documentation: All aspects of the research are being photo documented. Some of these photographs appear in the project newsletter, others will be posted on MML's website. Reports: This report was submitted electronically to, NMFS/St. Petersburg via in WordPerfect. c. Special problems There were difficulties in conducting research during the better part ofthis.report period due to five hurricanes threatening the study area. No freezers were ordered earlier in the project because of all the hurricane activity. 2. Expenditures: The semi-annual financial report for this project will be submitted to NOAA Grants Management by MML Administrative Director Dena Smith as soon as all the charges for the month of November have been closed out.
