5 New State Fishing Records Confirmed During 2016 WATTS BAR LAKE NASHVILLE --- Anglers established six Class A records and three new Class B standards during the 2016 calendar year. Class A comprises of sport fishing methods while Class B is for other methods other than rod and reel. The new records were certified by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. Two Class A records were set within two days of each other last March. Chase Rich caught a goldfish, which is a member of the carp family, on Douglas Reservoir. It weighed three pounds, five ounces. Also in East Tennessee, a 6-pound quillback carpsucker was caught on Boone Reservoir by Thomas Cody Hyder. Ronnie Leon Meade caught a 104-pound paddlefish on Cherokee Reservoir. A golden shiner was caught on Kentucky Lake (Bass Bay) by Joseph Wayne Dennie weighing 1 pound, 5 ounces. In mid-june, Polk County High School sophomore John Morgan was fishing on a farm pond in the county. He landed an 18 pound, 8 ounce trophy. The final Class A record of the year came two days after Christmas. Barry L. Parker was fishing on Old Hickory Reservoir and caught a tilapia that weighed 6 pounds and 5.5 ounces. Also taken by archery was a golden shiner weighing 11 ounces. It was taken last January by Billy Roberson on Kentucky Lake. Turkey Hunters Reminded of Harvest Check-in Procedures NASHVILLE --- With spring turkey hunting season quickly approaching, sportsmen are reminded of the various methods to check in their birds. 9 WATTS BAR LAKE Pending State Record for Musky Caught in Melton Hill Reservoir KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --- A state fishing record for a muskellunge, better known as a musky, has potentially been broken Stephen Paul on Melton Hill Reservoir. The angler landed the giant musky that weighed 43 pounds, 14 ounces while fishing on the Knox County portion of the reservoir on March 2. Regarded as a challenging fish to catch, particularly when they get older, Paul caught the fish at around 6.m. on an artificial lure. With Paul to document the historic catch was a friend, Dylan Gano. Paul also said the fish unfortunately died in his net when it was landed, being the only reason he considered weighing it for a state record. Otherwise, he says it would have been released back into the water. After the catch was made, the angler contacted TWRA Fisheries Technician Paul Shaw who tried, but was unable to find certified scales near the area where the fish was caught. Shaw then contacted Reservoirs Fisheries Biologist John Hammonds and Regional Fisheries Coordinator Bart Carter, who met Paul in Dandridge about three hours later to weigh and verify the new pending state record fish. The TWRA officials also measured the fish at 51 3/8 inches in length with a girth of 23 ½ inches. The state record musky has stood foot nearly 34 years. Angler Kyle F. Edwards caught a musky in Norris Reservoir weighing 42 pounds, 8 ounces on April 27, TWRA Fisheries Biologist Jim Negus estimates the fish to be between years old, but says that (Con t on p. 17) Angler Stephen Paul caught the new pending state record musky on March 2, 2017 from Melton Hill Reservoir. On the contrary, a musky in Wisconsin takes about 17 years to reach 50 inches. The musky is an apex predator and a tremendous sport fish native to Tennessee, Hammonds said. They put on a remarkable fight, once hooked and are typically very difficult to catch. A musky over 50 inches in length is extremely difficult to hook and land, and is considered to be a fish of a lifetime for most musky anglers. Congratulations to Steven on his remarkable catch. Once the paperwork is certified in TWRA s Nashville office, the fish will be listed as the new state record. The fish are present in Melton Hill due to TWRA s stocking program and are placed into the reservoir annually based on availability of fish. 26 CENTER HILL LAKE Statewide Turkey Season Opens April 1 NASHVILLE --- Tennessee s 2017 spring turkey season opens on Saturday, April 1 and continues through Sunday, May 14. The state young sportsman hunt for youth ages 6-16 is March Spring turkey harvest numbers have been consistent for a number of years in Tennessee. Tennessee turkey hunters have passed the 30,000 harvest mark for 14 consecutive years during the spring hunting season. Male turkey in wildflower field Hunting hours for turkeys are 30 minutes prior to legal sunrise until legal sunset. Legal hunting equipment includes shotguns using ammunition loaded with No. 4 shot or smaller. There is no restriction on number of rounds in magazine.
