That s what SWABC is all about The Best Fishing Club in NJ The regular meetings will be held on the third Tuesday of the month, at 8:00P.M. The only meeting that is not held at the Legion Hall on Tuesday will be the night of the Past President Dinner. That month is March. A $5 fee is required, for non-members, this entitles them to the 50/50 drawing, refreshments, snacks, and some new tricks about fishing. Welcome all; we hope you enjoy the evening.
2 President's Corner It was a very stormy night for our July 17 th meeting! Driving up from my home in Monroe Township (by Englishtown) it was pouring and my car was even hydroplaning with so much water on the roads. But the rain did not put a damper on our meeting. Our speaker, Michael Sardinas, gave us a very professional presentation on surf fishing. I noticed a number of our members taking notes as he was speaking. Michael is very passionate about surf fishing and his presentation shows it. His family often fishes together. We also had an auction on fishing gear that was donated by one of our former members who decided to stop fishing. His gear is in excellent shape and members Carl Bruger and Kevin Morgan conducted the auction for it. Members who made bids on this gear won very fine gear and at very reasonable, if not cheap prices! Our club made some money on this and our members got nice gear at the same time a win/win for all of us! Thanks Carl and Kevin for doing the auction for us. Both of you seem to be professional auctioneers! Nico made pull pork sandwiches and they were delicious! They were accompanied by Mac & Cheese and brownies. Thanks so much for feeding us so well Nico! During our Dark Horse drawings, I won three times! I only accepted one prize since I knew that if I picked all three of them, I would be stoned! I should have played the lottery that day! August 21 st meeting Bobby Uhrig to present Mega Strike, a fish attractant We have never had a speaker give a presentation on a fish attractant and there are a number of them on the market. I have personally used Mega Strike and so have other members in our club with positive results. Sometimes when the fishing gets tough, using a product like Mega Strike will make a difference with your catch. Bobby will explain how best to use his product line for various species of fish. He will also give is pointers on how to improve our fishing skills and catch more fish. September 18 th meeting AVET Reel Presentation George Valentini Many of our members use AVET reels and are very happy with their performance. Mr. George Valentini, Vice President of Sales, will be our guest to present their product line and the advantages of using AVET reels. Additionally, George has invited a representative from Jigging World to give us a presentation to sharpen our techniques to catch more fish. This meeting is two-fold a presentation on AVET reels and another one on improving our fishing skills from the boat & surf! Weird But True A Florida fisherman hoped to snag a mahi-mahi but instead reeled in an extra fishing package: a two pound brick of marijuana. Early birthday gift from Pablo Escobar, quipped another angler of this catch off Pampano Beach (New York Post. July 4, 2108). Both Craig and Mark will talk about these trips at our club meetings and will answer your questions about them concerning costs etc. August 25 th - Bus Trip to Point Judith, Rhode Island on the boat 7 Bees This trip will target BIG Fluke and Point Judith has a reputation for it. We will leave from the big parking lot across Shoprite, just a little ways down the road from our Legion location. The bus will leave at 2:30 a.m. This bus will stop for coffee/restroom breaks. Craig has seven spots left, so call him at (973) or him at Zincman@yahoo.com. Free Fishing Trips As a way of saying THANK YOU to all our club members who have supported our club with their time & donations. Our club is going to give away a free fishing trip at five of our club meetings. All you have to do is just show up at these meetings. You also have to be a member of our club and show your dues card. At our July 17th meeting, Joe Ruggerio won a free trip on the Katie James Charter (Captain Art Lein). At our August 21 st meeting, we will have a drawing for a free trip on the Fins on Feathers Charter (Captain Frank Tenore). Of course you can go on these trips by yourself, but better yet get some of your fishing buddies to join you and have a good time fishing together. With one trip already paid, the cost of charter the boat is even cheaper!
3 Funddddddddd JCAA Fluke Tournament Angler Loses $50,000! An Angler entered the JCAA Fluke Tournament that was held on August 4 th. This tournament offers $50,000 prize money for catching a fluke over 12 lbs. However, this angler and his crew did not pay the required $25 fee to be eligible for winning the $50,000 prize money. The JCAA requires the $25 payment to offset the hefty insurance costs associated with this prize - catching a 12 lb. fluke. This same angler caught a 12.4 lb. fluke! Since he did not pay the required $25 fee to be eligible for the prize money, he did NOT receive the $50,000 prize money! As the saying goes penny wise, pound foolish. Most, if not all boats in this tournament, have several anglers on them trying to win prizes. So, theoretically if this boat had 4 anglers the cost to be eligible to win this big prize money would be about $4! Giant Sea Gate Proposed off Sandy Hook Can it Work? Federal officials are considering building a 5-mile sea barrier stretching from Sandy Hook to Queens to protect northern New Jersey and New York from devastating storm surges - a proposal that has drawn overwhelming criticism, especially environmental advocates. This proposal is one of six considered by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers when a 12 foot storm inundated lower Manhattan. This proposal is in its infancy and that the cost, how large it would be and what materials would be used to build it still need to be developed. Although other states and countries use such barriers, this 5-mile barrier would change fish migrations, affecting the recreational and commercial industry which generates about 2.5 billion annually in economic activity. This 5-mile barrier would begin from Sandy Hook in Monmouth County to Breezy Point in Queens that would be designed to keep storm surges from entering New York harbor, the Hudson River, Newark Bay, the Hackensack River and Raritan Bay. It would allow passage for ships via gates. There are a number of problems associated with this barrier including shutting off the tidal system which brings in oxygen and nutrients into our shores. Our estuaries essentially become alike a stagnant lake. More importantly, if this barrier was in place and was hit by a huge surge, where would the surge water go? It would go to one or both ends of the barrier and then hit the communities at the ends of this barrier. So, what good does that do! Sandy Hook Fluke Tournament Winner Member Hector Chacon s fiancé (Debbie) won the Woman s Division of the Sandy Hook s Fluke Tournament with a 4.4 lb. fluke! She was presented with a nice rod & reel combo as her prize. Congratulations Debbie! Welcome Aboard! Joe Albanese Fort Lee Jose Mejias Westfield Ricky Taliaferro Clifton Robert Molten Park Ridge Have fun fishing with us! Laudrim Hoshafi Lodi Picnic at the American Legion Post # 170 Saturday, August 18 th The American Legion Post, where our club holds its meetings, is having a picnic and the public is welcome! The cost is $20 for adults and for youths under 18 it is free! For $20, there is plenty to eat and that includes: hot dogs, hamburgers, corn, sausages & peppers, macaroni, potato salad, baked beans, popcorn, ice cream, beer and soda! A DJ will play favorite tunes. Call ( for more info. You can also pay at the door. This is NOT a picnic sponsored by our fishing club. It is a picnic that is bring run by members of the American Legion Post # 170. A number of our club members also belong to this Legion. Jersey Shore Boat Sale & Expo September (10 th Anniversary) Boats for Every Budget Both New and Pre-owned Great End-of Season Deals & Activities for Little Boaters - $5 Admission & Plenty of Parking Friday 11a.m. to 6p.m. Saturday 11a.m. to 6p.m. Sunday 11 to 5p.m. Location is First Energy Park Home of Lakewood Blue Claws 2 Stadium Way Lakewood NJ. More info at: JerseyBoatExpo.com Jim Zimmer s Family Trip During a number of our past President s dinners, Jim Zimmer s grandsons (Aiden & Logan) deliver prizes won by our members. They always volunteer for this job and are good at it. To give them something for always helping us, our club paid for these boys to go on a fishing trip on the Reel Fun Fishing charter with Captain Kolias. Pictured are: Aiden, Brian (Jim s son), Logan and Jim Zimmer. A nice fishing trip with the Zimmer family! On a previous trip with a Katie James charter, Jim caught a hake that was purplish in color and around 4lbs. That hake looked like a big ling.
4 Club Bulletins to be Electronically Mailed Currently, our club bulletins are mailed to most of our membership with some of our members opting to receive them by . Our Board has been talking about sending out our bulletins by and we have developed a program to do just that. By going electronically, our club saves the cost with postage and envelopes. Also, if our club needs to update our members with the status of fishing trips, this can easily be done by . For example, Craig Zincavage currently needs 5 more members on his August 25 th fishing trip to Rhode Island. By sending this message out by , our members can have advanced notice of this trip availability instead of waiting until our bulletins are sent by mail the day after our Board meeting which is always on the second Tuesday of the month. Additionally, our members can receive a quick notice of a meeting cancellation because of weather problems. Also, fishing management issues are always on the horizon and we may need our members to be updated on them so they can respond to them if they want to. For those members who prefer to receive a hard copy of our bulletin, our club bulletins will be mailed as we currently do. At our August 21 st meeting, there will be a signup sheet for this purpose and sign it to receive your hard copy. Also, our club bulletins can easily be viewed by going to our website at Our August bulletin will be mailed as it usually is. But starting with the September 18 th club meeting, our club bulletins will be electronically mailed. Those members opting for a hard copy will receive by mail. NOTE our club list is NOT SHARED with anybody or any organizations. It is the private property of our club and used solely for the clubs benefit. Waters Cleared of Traps - By John Toth Our state DEP in the 1980 s began the development of creating 15 artificial reefs, two in our state s waters and 13 in federal waters. These reefs provide a habitat for a large number of salt water species and they also enhanced fishing opportunities for recreational anglers. Essentially, these reefs were built with funds from recreational anglers and were intended to be for general use, like a public park system for everybody to use. It is estimated that 20% of the fish caught in New Jersey come from these 15 reefs. Unfortunately, these reefs were so successful in attracting fish and lobsters that they also attracted commercial fishermen who completely covered these reefs with their traps. Recreational anglers got their gear continually snagged by these traps, rendering the reefs virtually unusable for them. Recreational anglers, fed up with their inability to use the reefs, organized to take these reefs back by forming Reef Rescue, a group of recreational anglers, clubs and divers pushing for new rules to remove commercial traps from the reefs. Removal would be through new state regulations and the reefs declared as Special Management Zones (SMZS) that would prohibit the use of traps on the reefs. Reef Rescue, a Council Member of the New Jersey Outdoor Alliance (NJOA), spearheaded a number of initiatives to remove the traps by galvanizing anglers to sign petitions, sending s to their legislators and meeting with them to get legislation passed for the removal of these traps. On several occasions, Reef Rescue was successful in getting a majority of New Jersey s senators and Assemblymen and women to support this legislation, but the Speakers of the Assembly (Albano and Roberts) would not post the bill due to their ties to commercial anglers. Angered by this frustration, Reef Rescue organized an official demonstration in front of Assemblyman s Albano s office in Cape May on April 9 th, 23 rd and April 30 th of 2011 with anglers carrying posters with the message Give Us Back Our Reefs! Close to 100 anglers were at these three demonstrations including our club members and also members from the Hudson River Fishermen s Association. Due to our pressure to remove the traps, in 2016, our state DEP petitioned the Mid-Atlantic Council (MAMFC) to make these 13 artificial reefs as Special Management Zones (SMZS). The MAMFC Steering Committee reviewed this issue and it recommended that the 13 reefs should have SMZ status. One issue that did not help the commercial sector is their claim to the IRS that they only made $25,000 in profits a year from using the 13 reefs! This bolstered the argument that the commercial anglers would not be adversely affected if these reefs became SMZS. At a December 12th MAMFC meeting that I attended along with other club members in Baltimore, a vote was taken on whether to have the 13 reefs designated as SMZS and it passed (9 votes for and 8 against). On July 9 th, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) finally ruled that the 13 reefs can be fished with hook & line and spears by divers. All traps must be removed by August 8, This whole story could be made into a book, but I have tried to give you 12 years of our struggle to remove the traps off our reefs in a few pages. I want to THANK ALL of you, especially Reef Rescue for making this happen! Sometimes, recreational anglers win one! Revenge Bites! A Florida man let go of a baby shark he caught while fishing only to have it swim back and chomp on his foot. The 52-year old fisherman caught the three-foot shark at a beach in Ponce Inlet and tossed it back while standing in the ocean. This particular lemon shark was very unhappy about being caught an - ocean rescue spokeswoman said. The man suffered minor injuries. Weird But True New York Post 5/30/18.
