3 Bluewater Anglers 42nd Annual Derby Bluewater Anglers Derby Committee Seated (left to right) Bob Daly, Helen Blondin, Lloyd Blondin, Paul Heckley Standing - First Row (left to right) John Barneveld, Ralph Eves, Henry Kock, Kevin Thompson, Gerry Fawdry, Pete Bothewell Standing - Back Row (left to right) Fred Wondergem, Linda Miller, Ed Holubowicz, David Bornais On behalf of the Derby Committee, welcome to the 42nd Annual Derby. Our prize package this year will be over $40,000 in cash and merchandise prizes. We are proud this year to once again welcome back the Village of Point Edward and Koolatron as our major sponsors. We would like to thank the following gold sponsors for their generous support: Huron Web, The Outdoorsman, Scott Plastics, Carpenters Local 1256, Johnson Outdoors, Bert's Custom Tackle, Bluewater Padded Accents, ModSpace, Lehder Environmental Services Ltd., Canadian Tire, Linda Miller/ReMax, Island's End Tuna Charters and Waypoint 04 Deep Sea Fishing & Marine Adventures. When reading your derby flyer, please note the many sponsors we have for this year's derby. This event would not be possible without their much appreciated assistance. The Bluewater Anglers Derby represents the total angling community. Kids prizes, Seniors and Ladies Day plus Bonus Draw prizes bring the entire family together to enjoy fishing Lake Huron and the St. Clair River. With five fish categories to choose from, both shore and boat anglers have a multitude of fishing opportunities and a chance to win one or more of the hundred prizes available. Message from the Derby Committee We Service All Makes & Models Lawnmowers, Riders, Tillers, Chainsaws, Weedtrimmers, etc. For those who are not familiar with the Bluewater Anglers, we raise fish in a really big way. Our newly renovated 5000 square foot hatchery facility has the capacity to raise 250,000 chinook salmon, rainbow trout and brown trout on a yearly basis. Since 1986, hatchery volunteers have raised and released over 5 million salmon and trout into lower Lake Huron. Operating the hatchery is very costly. All profits from the derby go directly into the hatchery account to cover operating expenses. Take pride in knowing that when you enter the derby you are doing something to support conservation, salmon and trout stocking and helping to ensure that you and your children can enjoy the sport of angling for years to come. The derby committee would like to once again thank Huron Web for their generous support towards the Bluewater Anglers and making the derby tabloid possible. Special thanks also to Julli Archibald for another great job in doing all the layouts and graphics in this derby tabloid. Your support has been greatly appreciated. See you on the water, or better still, at the Derby awards ceremony! 28 28 Bluewater Anglers 42nd Annual Derby Targeting Spring Coho Pete Bothwell Every spring, from ice-out until early May, anglers trolling the shallow 6 to 30 foot depths along the Lambton County shoreline are catching good numbers of coho salmon in the 1½-4 pound range. With no stocking programs in place since the early 80's, all of the coho are naturally reproduced in northern streams that enter into Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. Coho tend to be schooling fish. They are very aggressive and not usually boat shy, even in clear shallow water conditions. Catch one and you re bound to be in for some more action. Although my primary goal is to catch coho, I frequently encounter chinook, rainbow trout and lake trout as well. For example, in last year s Derby, 5 of the top 10 chinook salmon were caught in less than 30 feet of water. Here is my shallow water spring spread that uses inline boards, downriggers and dipsy divers. I rely heavily on inline planer boards to carry my baits far out to the sides. The mood of the fish will dictate how far out I run my boards. If they are aggressive and not too boat shy, I will keep things tight to the boat, 50 feet or less. If not, I will simply spread things out to the 80 foot range. I usually only run body baits on my in-line boards. These fish are forging on smelt and small minnows, so I usually run small 3½ to 5 body baits that have a swim depth of 4 6 feet. Both Rapalas and Bombers work well. Coho have a definite preference for smaller baits in red, orange, black and gold colour tones. As I mentioned before, coho often like an aggressive presentation. My hands-on favourite combo for spring coho would have to a 6 inch red Luhr Jensen dodger with a small Howie Peanut Fly running 16 inches behind the dodge. This combo works great with downriggers or dipsy divers. With shallow depths, running small 3¼ diameter Dipsy Divers on a #2 or #3 setting can be used. Letting out 15 to 20 feet of line will have your Dipsy Diver running from 6 to 8 feet under the surface. When running small dodgers, use a 6 foot leader of 20 lb. test fluorocarbon from the diver to the dodger. Some days this setup will catch more coho than the other rods. It is real exciting when a coho explodes from the water just behind the boats prop wash. Downriggers can also be used with cannon balls only 6 feet or less under the surface and with lures or body baits anywhere from feet back. Smaller to mid-size spoons like Pro Kings, Silver Streaks, Moonshine and Warrior Lures are top choices. A Warrior Flutter Spoon, Court Jester and Candy worked for me last spring. When targeting spring coho, look for areas that have warming impacts on the water. Rivers and small creek mouths, break walls, and shallow waters always warm first. Onshore winds will hold the warm water along the shoreline. Blue Point and Kettle Point, with their bays and underwater structures, will hold warmer water, as well. Migrating bait is attracted to the warmer water and coho salmon are not far behind. If water temperatures are less than 45 degrees, trolling speeds of 2 mph or less will usually provide more strikes. Once water reaches the 50 s, coho will start to head further offshore and you will have to kick up the speed to mph. Coho might not be a derby winner, but they sure are fun to catch and nothing tastes better than fresh coho fillets.

Club members provide all the expertise, showing the kids a number of fishing activities from rod & reel selection, proper casting techniques, tying different fishing knots, fish handling and identification, etc. Each one hour session will have 10 kids aged Once they have completed their course, it's off to the hatchery pond to try their luck at catching and landing a fish. Club members work one-on-one with these kids as some of the pond trout are well over 10 pounds. This provides lots of excitement for the kids and the spectators outside the fenced pond area. Every child will catch a fish that will be quickly netted and transferred to the club's stock-out trailer for release into the St. Clair River.

We have four membership meetings per year, with guest speakers and fishing clinics presented by local fishing experts. Members receive quarterly newsletters that contain club news and upcoming events, fishing tips and information that can be used to increase your fishing opportunities. We have a good working relationship with the Ministry of Natural Resources Bluewater Anglers 42nd Annual Derby 31 Join The Bluewater Anglers and Forestry (MNRF), local industry and other fishing clubs in the province and the State of Michigan. Our main goals are to provide anglers with an opportunity for fellowship with men and women who share common interests and concerns for fishing and the environment in lower Lake Huron. In 1986, we completed construction and started the operation of our full scale hatchery facility that raises over 200,000 salmon and trout annually. We sponsor a number of events each year, including the Bluewater Anglers Derby, Family Fun Fishing Day, Spring Shoreline Clean-up and Teach a Kid to Fish day. If you are concerned with the fishing and the environment of lower Lake Huron and the St. Clair River and would like to improve the fishing quality, perhaps you should consider joining the Bluewater Anglers. It s a great way to make friends, have fun and become a better angler while you make a contribution to fishing. Upcoming membership meetings are planned for April 10th, June 12th and September 11th at the Point Edward Arena Optimist Hall. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. The public is welcome.
