3 Commodore s Report As outlined in last month s report March was going to be an action filled month for CPBA. The month kicked off with the Calamari Classic Squid Information night. This was held on Thursday 1 st March and saw over 180 attendees enjoying a fine chicken and chorizo paella, drinks and squid cooked up by Chef Dale. Just ask any of the attendees for a copy of the two recipes handed out on the night and try them for a great meal or entree. Expert advice was given on tackle and techniques by Marco and his Anglers Fishing World tackle team. The techniques learnt at the Information Night were put to good use when the event was held on Saturday the 10 th March. Despite the wind being up during the night before conditions remained fishable and over 330 registered participants headed out on boats, in kayaks and on land to catch the elusive big one and win the $1,000 first prize. Safely to say that all that took part in the contest had an enjoyable family day out with smiling faces returning to CPBA for the weigh in, a great feed and some well-earned refreshment. Details of the results can be found on the Calamari Classic web site. CPBA as the host site was looking at its best thanks to the support of volunteers from the Management Committee, Duty Officers, bar volunteers and our staff whom worked throughout the day to ensure the safety and enjoyment for members who participated and our guests on the day. The third major event for March was the AAAWA Boat Fishing Championships held on Saturday 24th, which was a successful event. More news on this next month. Another major happening during March was the installation of Stage 1 and Stage 1A of the additional pens and eastern jetty. Work commenced on Monday the 12 th March following the Calamari Classic and was completed in time for the AAAWA Boat Fishing Championships. This was a major upgrade requiring a great deal of logistics with water and power as well as the necessary approvals required from various authorities. I would like to personally thank the co-operation we received from our Landlord the Department of Transport in granting extensions to our land and water leases and jetty licences and the huge amount of work done by our General Manager John Tissott to get the project up and running. We look forward to filling the pens with members larger boats and relieving some more pressure of large rigs in the parking areas. I encourage any members with larger boats to talk to John Tissott about putting your boat into one of the new pens. Easter will be upon us at the end of March and for some the end of the boating season. I trust you have enjoyed the summer boating season your Club has been able to provide for you. The informative snapper, squid and crayfish information evenings, the entertainment, the food and beverage, the special events, the pirate raid, the weekends cruising and club improvements all happened this summer season. 4 General Manager s Notes The Club hosted two major events this month, the Calamari Classic on 10th and the AAAWA State Boat Fishing Championship on 24th March. Both events were very successful with positive feedback from members of other Clubs and the public who participated in these events. Member Rob Cinquini s partner Zadah Cuffe won the $1,000 cheque for her kg calamari which was the heaviest caught on the day. Both events were well organized by David Kazim and Pat Shinnick and the AAAWA organizing group and the support by our Management Committee members and volunteers was excellent. These high-profile events have a positive impact on our Club. Club Sponsors Our sponsors financial support enables the Club to maintain and improve member facilities whilst retaining member subscriptions and fees at an affordable level. Please take the time to check with our sponsors for any work you require from insurance through to maintenance on your boat, trailer or vehicle. Fuel Facility On Site Discussions are still progressing with a fuel distributor re providing an on-site fuel facility for members boat fuel requirements. We expect a formal proposal in April. Further details will be provided as this item progresses. New Pens Stages 1 & 1A We are making good progress with stage 1 of our pen development with pile and pontoon works completed except for minor works. Changes to the land area adjacent to the gazebo is being finalized and expected to be completed within a month. The western side of the new eastern jetty is restricted to CVSSR and emergency vessels only. Bitumen has been cut in preparation for the services trench from the fish cleaning station to the pens and this work will be completed mid-april. The trench work may inconvenience members and we appreciate your patience and understanding. We still have a limited number of pens available for allocation. Please contact me if you have any queries or require further information on our pens. Temporary Pens Booking System A new system for temporary pens has been introduced in conjunction with the pen changes which necessitates members booking a temporary pen through the office or outside office hours through our Bosun. Several pens/ jetty tie-up positions will be retained for members requiring a short term temporary pen whilst their boat trailer is being repaired or for other purposes. Temporary pen usage is restricted to a maximum of seven days over a threemonth period. Wash-Down Bays Water is a valuable commodity and the Club and members are expected to manage our water wisely. Our water volume has increased dramatically, and members are reminded that there is a 10-minute maximum wash-down time per boat which is being monitored by cameras. The bays are provided to allow members to flush their motors and a quick rinse of the boat and trailer and not a comprehensive boat or gear wash. Please check that taps are turned fully off after use as we recently found a hose left fully open which if not detected, would have wasted more than 26,000 litres of water. Refurbishment of Ground Floor Restrooms Work on the new storeroom and vending machines area followed by a new office entry and relocation of the entry door for the first-floor foyer will commence late March. The balance of the work has been broken into a series of projects to minimise inconvenience for members. Updated House Rules Our House Rules were updated earlier this month to ensure they are consistent with several recent changes to our facilities. A copy of the updated House Rules is available on the Club web page under downloads. Please contact the office if you require clarification on any aspect of our House Rules. 6 Works & Grounds The March Busy Bee crew were George Tofts, Tom Bushby, Kevin, Allan Guest, Thor and myself. The crew were given the task of cleaning the function room chairs. There were lots of them and Tom, our quality control officer for the morning, kept us on our toes A couple of the chairs had some green chewing gum stuck under them and I don t believe it had anything to do with St Patricks day! For morning tea some party pies and sausage rolls from CPBA, we also had a surprise visit from Bill & Vera Davies who joined us for morning tea which was great. 8 OFFSHORE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS TEAM ASHRAM Many of our members have either met our 1st Rear Commodore Rhyss Whittred or seen his boat Ashram on the water. What many of you don t know is that Rhyss and his lovely lady Viv are heading to Quepos - Costa Rica in April with their fishing team to represent Australia at the Offshore World Championships. Rhyss is an avid fisherman in all forms of the sport but he really enjoys the tag and release of game fish like marlin, tuna, sailfish and mahi-mahi in a tournament situation. The Ashram fishing team is part of Perth Game Fishing Club and its home port is our very own Cockburn Power Boats Assoc. Rhyss takes the boat up and down the coast with the team, competing in various tournaments for the thrill of the sport. The team is made up Rhyss, Viv, Mark Jarrett (CPBA sponsor), Andy Pearson and Andy Ziepe (both CPBA social members) qualified to fish the world championships after they caught and released many game fish, including a blue marlin (est 160kg) in the Shimano WA Open qualifying tournament out of Jurien Bay last year. The Offshore World Championships is a release only game fishing tournament that has no prize money. It s all about representing your country and club and competing against the world s best fishing teams to claim the title as the world s best. On behalf of the Club we would like to wish the Ashram fishing team all the best for the tournament and we look forward to hearing the news whilst you are away. 14 Cruising Group Hi Cruisers, Well what a great long weekend March 3 rd till the 5th for the Annual Mandurah Boat Run.. We headed off from CPBA in convoy of 12 boats, it was a good trip conditions were reasonable. After arriving and settling into our pens for the weekend, we had lunch at the Mandurah Club. After we had the usual swim to cool off, we were invited to a costume party with the big ship boys at Nino s Fish & Chips wharf where we met some interesting people and had a look at how the other half go boating. Yes that is Mr Spud shed himself (it is not a costume). Sunday saw us head up river to Sandy Cove Tavern for lunch, and the now legendary raffle. We had a fantastic calm trip back, with the decision to stop in at Herring Bay for a swim and a BBQ. Have you seen Daphne We have been asked to all be on the lookout for Daphne the Duck, Daphne has been the mascot of Cockburn Masters Swimming Club, Both Cockburn Masters and the Coogee SLSC are trying to get her back. Daphne escaped from her mooring off Coogee on 11 March and was carried out to sea, she was seen recently West of Rottnest, and is expected to return during the next Westerly Blow. Please if you see Daphne, don t waste the Authorities resources in calling Sea Rescue. Simply rescue her, and seek the return of her to the Masters Swimming Club. A Reward has now been offered for her return. Cindy s Social Notes March has been a very eventful month at the Club with the Squid Information night, Calamari Classic and AAAWA State Boat Championships. Meeting a lot of members from other Clubs who participated in the AAAWA was an absolute pleasure. They were very impressed with the Club and the facilities on offer, a lot of positive comments and praise. These events were excellent exposure for the Club and we look forward to many more. Rhyss Whittred and Ryan Thipthorp have already locked in Friday June 8 for a Deep Drop fishing information night. No doubt this will be another winner, with excellent guest speakers, fantastic raffle prizes and loads of information for all the fishing enthusiasts. Sunday sessions meals & music will continue on a monthly basis, always a great opportunity to support your club and enjoy catching up with members. Tommy James entertained guests at the Friday night event on March 23rd and the feedback was fantastic. I have invited Tommy back to play at our Sunday session on 22nd April, which will no doubt be another great arvo of entertainment.
