Education Committee Fall 2017 Report Prepared By Education Chair: Aaron Waltz, PGA Ferris State University
2017 Fall Meeting & Education Seminar Date: Monday, October 23, 2017Time: 8:30am 12:00pm registration 7:30am Credits: Four (4)Location: Eagle Eye Golf Club, Chandler Road, East Lansing REMINDER: SPORT COAT IS REQUIRED FOR MEN, DRESS CLOTHES FOR WOMEN Special Guest: We are excited to announce that Johnny Miller, a decorated 25-time winner on the PGA Tour, one of the first inductees entered into the World Golf Hall of Fame, and analyst for the Golf Channel on NBC, will be our special guest. Emceeing the event will be Brian Crowell, President of the Met Section as well as a television broadcaster, radio host and author. This Q&A gathering hosted by Zero Friction is a once in a lifetime opportunity that you won t want to miss. Education: Time: 1:00pm 5:00pm Cost: $45.00 Credits: Four (4) Topic: Expert Strategies for Coping with Adversity in Life and in Business Speakers: Michelle Byrd, Ph.D., a fully licensed clinical psychologist and professor at Eastern Michigan University, and Tom Waltz, Ph.D., Ph.D., a licensed clinical psychologist and researcher. Overview: Michigan PGA Members work in an industry with extraordinary seasonal demands. Establishing a meaningful work-life balance can be challenging under the best of circumstances. While a demanding workload can contribute to burnout, additional challenges such as depression, substance abuse, and stressed relationships at work and at home can make achieving work-life balance feel out of reach. Drs. Byrd and Waltz will begin the workshop by providing a general overview of what major stress reactions can look like, the short- and long-term consequences of stress and how participants can evaluate their current coping strategies and habits. The remainder of the workshop will be a series of conversations where expert strategies are described that members can use immediately to both help prevent and address a variety of life problems. Resources will also be provided to help members know how to connect with the right kind of help when they, their colleagues, or others they care about may benefit from assistance for coping with adversity.
Michigan Section Member Service Requirement (MSR) Update: The Michigan Section has a total of 563 members that are required to complete MSR s. With the current three year cycle coming to a close June 15, 2018 it s extremely important all members complete their required minimum MSR s. Currently only 129 members (22.9%) have met the requirements. This unfortunately places Michigan in the rank of 35 or the 41 sections. Please refer to the attached document (PGA Member Service Requirement) on how to properly earn the required 36 hours for Meeting/Education/Player Development and the total 54 required MSR s. PGA Apprentice Update: The Michigan PGA currently has 85 registered apprentices in the following categories: B-1 = 10 B-4 = 2 B-6 = 4 B-8 = 64 B-12 = 2 B-13 = 1 B-14 = 2 Of the 85, we have 20 apprentices (23.5%) that are suspended: Failure to Meet the Acceptable Progress Policy. The average number of months suspended is in excess of 10 months. This data indicates these suspended apprentices have become High Risk of termination and will not be eligible to continue in the apprentice program. If you employ and apprentice, please take the time to review the PGA Apprentice Acceptable Progress policy below and in addition select the link to further check the status of your apprentice. As the PGA Member, the mentoring process is essential to your apprentice s success. Please hold your apprentices accountable for their education and help them find a successful path to PGA Membership. If you have any questions in regards to apprentice education please feel free to contact Aaron Waltz via awaltzpga@gmail.com or office phone (231) PGA Apprentice Acceptable Progress Tracking: Acceptable Progress in the PGA PGM Program is defined by the successful completion of each Level and matriculation into the subsequent Level. Level 1 must be successfully completed within two years of the Level 1 start date Level 2 must be successfully completed within two years of the Level 2 start date Level 3 and election to PGA Membership must be successfully accomplished within eight years of the Level 1 start date.
Individuals who have not successfully completed the Level at the end of their two-year suspension will be terminated from the PGA PGM Program. Apprentices have eight years from their Level 1 start date to graduate from the PGA PGM Program, meet all election requirements and become elected to PGA Membership. Use the search below to track the Testing progress of any apprentice.

PGA CPP 2-DAY WORKSHOPS The PGA of America s Education Team is offering PGA Professionals a unique opportunity to complete the course work required for Certification in a dynamic group learning environment. Over 2 intensive days, we will work through the required courses in the chosen CPP career path. What s covered: The two-day (16 hour) program will cover all courses within the career path except the Revenue Management and Simulation course work in a workshop setting. The Business Simulation will be played as well. Cost: $350 - Includes One-year library subscription (payable on PGA.org) $100 - Project fee (Paid online at the time of project proposal submission) Pre-requisite: Purchase the Certification course library. No course work is required to be complete prior to attending. Steps: Register ($350 library subscription) Attend 2-day workshop Complete five (5) Revenue Management Courses* Complete two (2) Simulations of your choice * PGA Members in good standing may complete the Project ($100) and earn Certification. Complete the Team-Based Simulation *Attendees may elect to complete the Revenue Management and Simulation courses either before or after attending the workshop. The PGA s Certified Professional Program (CPP) is an online, career-enhancing educational curriculum that supports the goals of PGA members who are committed to continuously improving their business and teaching skills to meet the increasing demands of the golf industry. This online approach ensures on-demand access when your schedule permits, while reducing time and travel costs associated with traditional classes.
The program offers four certifications: General Management Golf Operations Teaching & Coaching Player Development that follow the seven defined career paths (Golf Operations, Teaching & Coaching, General Management, Executive Management, Retail, Ownership/Leasing and Player Development) of a PGA Professional. Requirements of the Certified Professional Program include: Select your career path. Complete all assigned reading and course work. The courses to complete will be listed once a career path is selected. Complete a project that summarizes the impact and enhanced performance gained on the job as a result of your training and development in the certification of your choice. All PGA members will be able to complete the Certified Program, except for class F members. Class F members may purchase the CPP library and complete courses, but cannot become Certified until after transfer out of Class F. Once Certification is achieved, members are encouraged to continue their education in the Master Professional Program. This program is The PGA of America s highest designation, and is comprised of an extensive project based on the specific certification previously acquired. PGA Professionals must have eight years of PGA membership to achieve PGA Master Professional status. STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT SIMULATIONS The PGA has designed and developed simulation interventions to enable PGA Professionals to understand real world golf situations aligned with a primary focus on improving marketing and sales at a golf facility. The simulation of real-world scenarios has long been used effectively and strategically as a method for business training. Presenting learners with situations that resemble ones they might be confronted with is what constitutes experiential learning. Participants can be expected to: retain learned information better learn immediately how to apply that information to the real challenges they will face in the workplace learn what kinds of challenges they are preparing to face engage creatively with the learning process
All of the above offers benefits that traditional rote learning often does not. TEAM-BASED BUSINESS SIMULATION The PGA Business Management team-based Simulation is a virtual management challenge that gives an individual the opportunity to control a realistic golf club either Public or Private. Working in a team, members will make facility-wide decisions while competing for customers and profit in a specific market against as many as 4 other teams in the session. These simulations have been developed to enhance a PGA Professional s ability to successfully improve business performance at their public or private facility. Member Business Simulation Workshops are designed to enhance the strategic management skills of PGA Members and to support critical aspects of problem solving, team-building, and sales and marketing which can lead to a stronger and more sustainable business.
