9 WELCOME The latest statistics show that while the average handicap in the US is 14.4, in South Africa it is It s a concern, because it suggests the golfers in this country are not improving. The obvious question is: why aren t they? It isn t down to a lack of golf coaches this magazine s Grant Hepburn is a prime example of the quality that exists among the coaches. It also isn t down to the equipment being constantly rolled out, because without a doubt long-irons and drivers are far easier to hit today than they were 30 years ago. Perhaps a contributing factor is the courses on which we play, where missing a fairway often results in a thrown-away stroke or two. Or maybe the problem is right in front of our eyes. South Africa is not producing enough influential age-group, younger golfers who will improve their games quickly and in so doing help to bring the average handicap down. Then there is something else that needs to be flagged there are ringers in our midst. I recently heard a story where a golfer and his partner won a golf day the one player shot a 76 gross off a 16-handicap, but when it came to handing in his scorecard at his local club he put down a score of 96. This is a flaw and it needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency. The only things that can control this scourge in our game that affects the handicapping system, created by these ringers, are the golf clubs and the handicaps system. Essentially, a round of golf can be captured by the club when you register to play, which adds to the number of rounds recorded each year. But the question is: should a social round of golf be allowed to be entered as a score when it is not part of a competition? A ringer can deliberately manipulate his or her handicap. It is not as if people aren t playing golf. The latest statistics from the US reveal there are around 100-million people taking part in some form of the sport, which is great news for the industry and those brands affiliating themselves to the sport. In the past, the numbers around golfers were based on how many people played on a golf course, but other areas were not taken into account. Some of the new developments are now incorporating people using driving ranges and other forms of golf. One of them is Top Golf, which is a combination of golf with VIP treatment and has all the perks of drinks, snacks and entertainment. One wonders if we will see this in South Africa sooner rather than later. To end off, we d like to share some good news with you about your favourite monthly read.
