Well, here we are the final Newsletter for May I, on behalf of your Captain and Committee, wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. My thanks to our two regular contributors, Paul Barham and Alan Royle. Please refer to the DIARY NOTES below right for important notices and information. Wednesday 7 th November 2018 Mid Week Medal / Stroke Play & 9 Hole Stableford - Manor Course Only 22 players braved what can only be described as the first signs so far of winter. Rain to begin with, assisted by a very chill wind. Despite the conditions there were some very good scores and the banter in the Clubhouse was as good as always. So the results, in third place on countback with a Net 72 was Terry Buck but unfortunately in the overall Club Competition he was relegated to fourth, and with a Net 71 Richard Tucker on countback was also relegated to third, as Martin Edey who is a non-senior came second on countback with a Net 71. But with an exceptionally fine score of a Net 63 was our star of the day - Eric Buckle. 9 Hole Stableford (Qualifier) - Manor Course This qualifying 9 hole competition, perhaps due to the weather, only attracted 12 competitors. In third place with 13 points on countback was David Newman. In second place with 14 points was Brian Stanton and the winner with 17 points was Erich Hembach. Wednesday 14 th November Stableford - Yellow Ball & 9 Hole Stableford - Manor Course After a very detailed and explicit explanation from our Captain on the rules and requirements to play this competition, the field of 48 players teed off from the 1 st, 6 th and 10 th in teams of four. My team were quite upbeat with our results, as we had a ten pointer, a few eights and several sixes and were generally not playing too badly to score over a hundred points, and possibly be in the prizes. Fat chance, we were nowhere near the rostrum as can be seen from the results. Continued on page 2 Wednesday 5 th Mid Week Medal & 9 hole Stableford D e c e m b e r EVE Wednesday 12th Captain s Choice & Trophy Presentations Wednesday 19 th Waltz Wednesday 26 th Boxing Day DIARY NOTES From Wednesday 5 th December, we start later and this continues to the end of February with registration from 0840 to 0910 and we will tee off at Presentation Lunch Wednesday 12 th December Registration 0830 Coffee & Tea on arrival - 9 Holes of Golf - followed by lunch. Closing date for entries - 5 th December Cost 10.00
Wednesday 14 th November Stableford - Yellow Ball - Continued from page 1 In second place were the team of John Sheff, Paul Cundy, Andy Parker and Peter Cook with 123 points. But in first place with 124 points were the team of John Rogers, Robert Danby, Steve Haigh and Edward Harvey. 9 Hole Stableford - Manor Course In spring-like weather the scoring proved to be very good. In third place with 17 points on countback was Dave Muldoon, in second place with 18 points was Frank Woods, but out in front with 22 points was the winner - Bernard Lees. Wednesday 21 st November Senior Captains Drive In A note from Bill Thorpe - Captain - I thank everyone for their support on my Drive In day. The weather was very kind, a little cold but some sunshine through the clouds and dry. 71 members played golf, spreading themselves over the three courses - 27 Stock, 22 Brook and 22 Manor. Results - Nearest the pins - Stock - Craig Laurence, Brook - Rob Avery, and on Manor - Frank Woods. Stableford Stock - 1st on countback Mark Gregory with 20 points, 2nd Bill Thorpe with 20 points. Brook - 1st on countback Rob Avery with 18 points, 2nd John Grumbt with 18 points. Manor - 1st on countback Erich Hembach with 19 points, 2nd Derek Kerstein with 19 points. A most enjoyable day which raised over 700 for my Captains charity, the Hamelin Trust, a great effort by all concerned and a huge thank you to those who contributed. Thanks to Bob Braine for providing the photographs below. The three Amigos - Outgoing Captain, Richard Glasby, Director of Golf, Craig Laurence and Incoming Captain, Bill Thorpe. He must get this one! Outgoing Captain, Richard putting out. Yes that will do, 298 yards I think! Incoming Captain Bill, starting his year with an awesome drive. Wednesday 28 th November Texas Scramble After a 0400 course inspection after the steady rain fall overnight by Neil, our Head Green Keeper, it was decided to close the course until a further inspection at A small gathering of members arrived for registration, or more to the point for a mug of coffee or tea and a chat. By about 0845 most had drifted away claiming there was gardening and car washing to be done!!! By about 0915 there was only a few left, and no golf was played. Was the course opened at 1000? I m not sure as I had left by then.

Rules of Golf No 13 By Alan Royle - Essex Golf Union - Rules Official Rule 14.3b These four pictures on the right, show what is and what is not allowed when dropping a ball. This procedure should prevent a dropped ball from rolling too far or plugging into wet ground or sand. The print on the above is very small. You may find it easier rather than reading it on a Smart Phone to look at it on a full computer screen, or you can see it in full on the R & A website. Rules continued on page 6
Rules continued from page 5 Rule 19.3 Relief options for unplayable ball in Bunker. Note when taking back on the line relief you have one club length each side of the line in which to drop the ball, and when taking option 3 you have a two club lengths arc in which to drop the ball. DIAGRAM 19.3: RELIEF OPTIONS FOR BALL UNPLAYABLE IN BUNKER A player decides that his or her ball in a bunker is unplayable. The player has four options: (1) For one penalty stroke, the player may take stroke-and-distance relief. (2) For one penalty stroke, the player may take back-on-the-line relief in the bunker. (3) For one penalty stroke, the player may take lateral relief in the bunker. (4) For a total of two penalty strokes, the player may take back-on-the-line relief outside the bunker based on a reference line going straight back from the hole through the spot of the original ball. Head Greenkeeper s Report Looking back on the year, we experienced some very testing times, from the very wet spring, course closures and one of the driest and hottest five summer months on record. The greens have performed reasonably well due to continual thatch reduction. Because of the conditions they were slower than expected due to keeping the grass a little longer to protect them from the heat. That s now behind us and we move forward. With new benches and hole signage being purchased that will be put out early next year. The levelling of tees has now started and we will see continued investment in new machinery. The 13 th and 15 th tees have been levelled and turf laid, other tees will be spiked and rolled (weather permitting). We are also reconstructing the 12 th medal tee, this will have a much bigger surface area and enable tee management to be easier. The 12 th fairway has burnt off over the summer with the loss of a lot of coverage, this has been spiked and seeded with a low temperature germinating seed, dressed with a soil amending topdressing and this will continue over the winter and spring (weather permitting). Continued work on thatch reduction will take place on the greens with the graden machine. A new machine to start thatch reduction on fairways has been purchased and will start to be used within the maintenance programme early next year and for years to come. Thank you for your support this year. Neil Stopps - Head Greenkeeper
You may have heard these before! A pirate walked into a bar and the bartender said Hey, I haven t seen you in a while. What happened, you look terrible. What do you mean? said the pirate, I feel fine. Bar tender: What about the wooden leg? You didn t have that before. Pirate: Well, we were in a battle and I got hit by a cannon ball, but I m fine now. Bar tender: Well, ok, but what about that hook, what happened to your hand? Pirate: We were in another battle. I boarded a ship and got into a sword fight and my hand was cut off and I got fitted with a hook. I m fine, really.. Bar tender: What about that eye patch? Pirate: Oh, one day we were at sea and a flock of sea birds flew over. I looked up and one of them pooped in my eye Bar tender: You're kidding, you lost your eye just from bird poo. Pirate: No no not from the poo, it was my first day with my new hook. By Mark Smith <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> Golfisms These are just a sample of the hundreds of golfisms that we must all hear at some point during a round! A Dennis Wise - nasty 5 footer An O J Simpson - got away with it An Adolf Hitler - two shots in a bunker A Rock Hudson putt - looks straight but isn't A Yasser Arafat - ugly and in the sand An Arthur Scargill - a great strike, but a poor result A Gerry Adams - a provisional A Salman Rushdie - a very difficult read A Jeremy Corbyn - way too far left A Greek economy putt - over borrowed A Bud-Light - you land just short of the pond (close to water) A toilet shot - you flushed it A Robertson s - a jammy shot A NITBY - Not In The Bunker Yet By Keith Wiggins FUN FACTS Golf balls are like eggs - they're white, they're sold by the dozen and a week later you have to buy more. A pro-shop gets its name from the fact that you have to have the income of a professional golfer to buy anything. A good drive on the 18 th hole has stopped many a golfer from giving up the game. If your opponent has trouble remembering whether he scored a six or a seven, he probably scored an eight. When you look up and curse an awful shot, you will always look down again at exactly the moment when you ought to start watching the ball if you ever want to see it again. When your shot has to carry over a water hazard, you can either hit one more club or two more balls. The less skilled the player, the more likely he is to share his ideas about the golf swing. Everyone replaces his divot after a perfect approach shot. A putt left short of the hole is guaranteed not to go in the hole.
Hi Gentlemen Tutorial from Paul Barham 7 The winter is definitely here with the recent chilly winds and damp conditions, the course is playing a lot longer so it s more important for our short game to be sharp and to be able to play a high lob shot and a lower pitch shot. In this month s article I will 8 explain the basic differences between both shots so it gives you more variation in your approach shots to the green. If we look at my set up in a lob shot in photo 1, you can see how my ball is positioned slightly left of centre with the club face slightly open, my stance is a little wider and my hands are opposite the inside of my left thigh with my weight 60% on my left side. In photo 2, you can see how my wrists have hinged in my backswing with the club face open ( photo 3). At impact notice how my club is open with the hands returning opposite my left thigh. In photo 4, you can see how my follow through is a mirror image of my backswing with the wrists hinged. If we look at the lower pitch shot you can see the difference in the set up where the ball is positioned towards the right foot which will deloft the club (photo 5). The backswing is shorter with less wrist hinge (photo 6) at impact you can see the shaft is more forward with my hands ahead of the club head (photo 7). This is the key to hitting the lower pitch shot, in photo 8, you can see the shorter follow through with the club head pointing at the target. Hope this helps you guys! And I wish you all a great Christmas and a happy 2019! Winter offer is 75 for 4 x 30 minute lessons.
