It only seems like yesterday we were hanging up the trimmings on the Clubhouse Christmas Tree and, goodness me, it was! Before the hustle and bustle of wrapping and posting gifts, house decorating and cooking takes its toll on our time and energy, it s worth reflecting on the reason for the season. TV and shopping centres make it seem that Christmas is all about gifts, carols, parties, Xmas Dinner, Christmas lights and Boxing Day sales? But is it? In his book How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Dr Seuss writes, And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more. It certainly must mean a lot more. There is something about Christmas that reaches into hearts of humanity, no matter what their creed or culture, or where they are around the world, and stirs a longing for closeness to family and friends, a memory of those gone or far away and a longing for kindness and peace in our time. May we all find that little bit more in Beachmere Sands in Merry Christmas! Peace, Joy and Friendship be with us all today and throughout all the days we spend together in this special place we call home. 2 Drought Appeal Last issue we mistakenly published a thank you to the Social Club for the Drought Appeal. Thanks should have gone to the Beachmere Sands Quilting Group who made the major prize of a quilt and many of the other prizes. Well done ladies, and thank you for your hard work in running such a successful campaign. 2 December s Calendar is FULL! Reminders: 5th December Bare Traps Shoes 10.30am Shopping trips for December will be; Northlakes 6th & 20th Chermside on 13th Morayfield on 27th. Christmas Party 8th December - Bring a Plate A reminder, there is NO Cook s Night Out in December. In January, Cooks Night Out will be on 2 nd Wednesday and the Encore will be on last Wednesday. Regular CNO and CNO Encore will recommence from last Wednesday in February. I wanted our street to have the prettiest decorations in the neighbourhood, so I strung lit coloured balls from house to house, all the way down the block. I did all the electrical wiring myself. We re the third pile of ashes from the corner. - Bob Hope Golf News A lovely day saw 12 golfers compete for the Ray Quill monthly medal. Again some top scores were recorded, and a shot from one of the Bay residents off the 2nd tee landed in the dog run. Geoff has been advised to take a few lessons before the next game. Winner on the day was John Thurgood (PJ) with a nett 31, followed by Rod Ost with a nett 32. The ball run down went down to nett 36. Nearest the pins to: PJ, Morrie, Neville and Geoff C. with Sandy taking out the ladies pin shot. The raffle 1st prize to Rod and runner up to Neville. NO list for next month, as I will be contacting each golfer to check on attendance for our last game of the year, with the cost per person/couple needed to cover the buffet and drinks similar to last year. Remember, there will be no game in January, first game back is on the 2nd Sunday in February. I will be stepping down from organising the Sunday games after 3 1 / 2 years and need a golfer/s to volunteer to run this day if it is to continue. Keep hitting them straight Ken V 74 Beachmere Car Fun Run Sunday 18th November saw 44 residents in 19 cars departed the Sands Club House on the Mystery Car Run. The morning was overcast after the previous night s rain. Not promising for open top vehicles, which the organisers where hoping to use, so it was a quick change back to a more suitable 4x4 for the occasion. The cars were split into two different routes, cars leaving approx. 1 minute apart, instructions on the run sheet telling which way to go at the gate. Mistakes were made by some, but soon rectified when they realized their error. (We could see them turn around.) The two routes then joined again at Old Toorbul Road, proceeding along Pumicestone Rd then right into Bigmore Drive for a tour through Elimbah and Twin View Road arriving at Wamuran or Bracalba. Yes another split, this was done for safety turning on to the D Aguilar Highway, then travelling on down to Woodford. Entrants then had morning tea, picked up a bag at the information centre, prearranged, which contained the Stage 2 Run sheet. Stage 2 took them up Mt Mee Road and down the very scenic route of Campbell s Pocket Road to Wamuran, and back home for a debrief, sausage sizzle and scoring the answers to questions on the run sheet. Bottles of wine for the most correct answers were given for stage1a, Stage1B, Stage2 and overall. A great day had by all and no Divorce Papers were required. 3 REMEMBER THIS! Both male and female reindeer grow antlers in the summer each year. Boy reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, late November to mid- December. Girl reindeer retain their antlers until after they give birth in the spring. Therefore, according to EVERY historical story about Santa's reindeer, EVERY single one of them, from Rudolph to Blitzen, has to be a girl. We should've known..only women would be able to drag a fat man in a red velvet suit all around the world in one night and not get lost! Christmas Day at the Sands Residents (only) from The Sands are invited to join together on Christmas Day for lunch in the Sands Clubhouse. If, on Christmas Day, you find yourself without any family members (being Parents, Sons, and Daughters etc.) there will be a lunch held in the Sands Clubhouse. It is a fantastic day with everyone contributing to a great lunch, bringing a variety of food being meats/salads/desserts/etc. So that we have a good variety of food, please call either Sue Villa 7 or myself Deb Villa 100 and let us know what you would like to contribute. We would find it very disappointing that a resident was celebrating Christmas Day on their own, when they could have joined us and had a great day. If you know of any resident that is unaware of what happens here at the Sands on Christmas Day please inform them that they are more than welcome to join us. To celebrate, there will be a picnic in the shade of the trees on the western side of the courts. It will be an opportunity for you watch experienced players in action and try it for yourself. Gift Shop Season s Greetings Beachmere Sands Xmas Lights Well, Christmas is just about on our doorstep, and the ideal spot for those last minute gift ideas is our own wonderful Beachmere Sands Gift Shop. Then, on Friday 21st December at 7.30pm a Christmas Parade will commence at the Clubhouse and move through the village complete with Carol Singers and Santa in the Xmas Buggy. It is important for us to keep refreshing the Library, and the only way we can do that is to regularly put different books onto the shelves. We now have an excellent collection of selfhelp How to Play the Guitar books and other nonfiction titles including some interesting new biographies. You will notice that a significant new donation of DVDs has been temporarily put onto one of the top shelves until new shelves have been installed. We were delighted to see the lovely library at the Bay open and ready for business on open day last month. It was our pleasure to get them started and we enjoyed the anticipation of seeing it all complete. Please continue to donate your books as you finish with them. I am happy to collect them so please just telephone me. Remember the Reason for the Season this Christmas, and I hope Santa puts an exciting book into your Christmas stocking which you can donate to the Library once you ve read it! They are relatively cheap to purchase and would make a great Christmas present. The music store in Morayfield have ukuleles available. Mahalo is one brand which is good to start out with. Any group formed need not be limited to ukulele. Guitar, keyboard, cajon or bongo drums can also work well along with the ukes. If you do not play an instrument, but love to singalong you would also be most welcome.
