3 DGI Croquet - An activity across age and gender

4 4 Many have played Garden Croquet, especially in their childhood. This game has evolved into an activity offered by many local associations within DGI. Croquet in DGI is a different game than Garden Croquet. It is played on a court marked with a string and measures 20 x 30 meters. The hoops are bigger and more solid than in Garden Croquet. You can hold the mallet with one hand. It is always played with 4 balls, and normally also 4 players teamed in pairs, where one side takes the red and yellow balls and the other takes the blue and black balls. DGI Croquet is therefore a companion game. A brief history The first Croquet Association was founded in South West Jutland, more specifically in the areas of Varde, Ølgod, and Grindsted. Throughout the 60s and 70s the associations within this area made the foundations of our existing game-rules. In registered associations had been founded and a croquet committee was made in Ribe Amts Gymnastik- og Ungdomsforening (County of Ribe Gymnastics and Youth Association). Since then the interest for the activity has been rapidly growing. Today our Croquet game has been spread out to many parts of Denmark, so that there are associations and croquetcommittees in most of the regional departments of DGI. The offers are many. More than training in the evening, internal club-tournaments are often held. Additionally, many associations arrange Sunday rallies and weekday get-togethers where non-local players are invited to some cheerful matches and delightful social gatherings. Most of our regional departments also offer tournaments where a series of games are planned throughout the summer. The winners of the regional tournaments, in their respective category, promote to the national tournament. If you wish to meet players from all over the country, you can participate in national rallies and national conventions arranged by the DGI Krocket landsudvalg (DGI National Croquet Committee) or participate in the singleor multi-day tournaments arranged by clubs or regional committees. Croquet has been represented at DGI s landsstævner (DGI s National Sport Festival) since 1990.

5 Croquet Equipment 5 The court consists of 100 meters of string to mark the court. 4 pegs for the corners of the court 8 hoops Width 40 cm. Height about 45 cm. 1 hoop, width 18 cm. height about 45 cm. 1 round start/finish peg, diameter max 25 mm. 1 round turn peg, diameter max 25 mm 4 plastic balls with a diameter of 85 mm +/- 5 mm, that weighs 330 g +/- 6 g. The colours have to be red, blue, yellow and black. 4 mallets. The mallet can be chosen by the player, however the handle has to be a least 45 cm, head not included. Contact persons or the croquet committees of the regional departments can inform about the closest distributors. Current names and addresses of croquet committees and contact persons can be found on the DGI website under Krocket.

6 6 Instructions/start-up Instructors Regional departments in croquet or persons from local organizations will gladly go to your organization to tell about the croquet start-up, purchase of equipment and the possibilities of seeking help at the foundation of a new organization. Presentation We can additionally offer a presentation of the game at town celebrations, sports tournaments, holiday camps etc. Game Rules The game rules can be requested at the regional departments and contact persons. Moreover, the game does not require a referee. Start-up When you are a few interested people, you will have the option to call for an instructor to go to your local club. The instructor will bring the necessary equipment. Instruction/presentation/start-up is free for you and your club. 9 Croquet courses 9 Spot-courses Spot-courses can be held with duration of 3-10 hours. There will be a short review of the game and its rules. The game will be tried in practice. EVERYBODY CAN PARTICIPATE K1 Course The course is arranged by the national department and applies to participants that has played the game for at least one year and has the interest to expand their knowledge of Croquet and are interested in the role as Croquetinstructor. The topics are for instance: equipment, court set-up, body-balance, shooting-posture, mallet positioning, the passage of the balls through the hoops and ground rules. K3 and K4 courses The courses are arranged nationwide and are follow-ups on the K2, where the topics for instance are about taking advantage of the game-direction and the balls of a team-mate or opponent, rally or tournament-planning, learning and teaching methods, instruction and game-analysis. Furthermore supplementary courses and instructorseminars are offered. K2 course The course is arranged by the national department and is a follow-up on the K1, where the participants get the opportunity to expand their knowledge to Croquet with regards to game-rules, both theoretically and practically, for instance about: roquet, croquet strokes, peg-balls, rover and starting out.

10 10 Rules to get going To win the game two team-mates, with each other s help, have to make it through all hoops, roquet each other and the two other balls on the court and can end the game by hitting the start/ finish peg first. 4 persons teamed in two pairs participate in the game. There are 4 balls and very player has his/her own colour. Red and yellow play together. Blue and black play together. The order of players and colours are: Red, blue, yellow and at last black. The court is 20 x 30 m and is marked by a string. There re 8 broad hoops and one thin centre hoop (see the equipment list). You start at the start/finish peg and play through the hoops to the right side of the court, until you hit the turn peg and play back through the hoops in the other side of the court. If you hit the ball through 1 hoop in one try, you ll get an extra shot. If you shoot the ball through 2 hoops in one try, you ll get two extra shots. The ball is through the hoop if the handle of the mallet can be placed between hoop and ball without touching the ball. You loose 1 shot, if one or more balls run out of the court. The ball/balls are placed again on the court on the place where it ran out plus one width of the mallet s head from the line. If it happens in a shot, where you croquet, the croqueted ball is put where it ran out and the other ball is put on the side of it. Thereafter the croquet-rules are followed, 1-3. It counts for a stroke when placing the balls on the court once again. If you stroke with a wrong ball, put it back again and strike the right ball. You can only hold the mallet with one hand when you hit the ball. You have to hold the handle at least 10 cm above the head and you shoot with one of the mallets ends.

11 11 You have to hit the ball through hoops 1, 2 and 3 (see court-map on p. 5), before you can croquet, but players that have already been through the first 3 hoops can always croquet you. After hoop 7 you have to hit the turn peg. It gives an extra stroke when you hit the peg. You are then peg-ball in 3 strokes, which means that the other can t croquet your ball, and if an opponent hits a peg-ball, it has to stay 2 strokes from the moment of contact, before it has to go through hoop 8 or 8 and 9 on the way back in the opposite side of the court. When the last hoop (14) is passed, you can t hit the start/finish peg. If that happens, you have to start again as a peg-ball at the other side of the court next time it s your turn, and from there you have to get through the hoops once again. You have the right to croquet another ball, the first stroke after having passed a hoop. By that you will achieve 2 extra strokes. Have you croqueted another ball, you will take you own ball in hand. Then you will have 3 options: The balls are put side by side, and you hit the ball you are playing with. The balls are put side by side and you hold your own ball with hand or foot, while you hit it, so the other ball is shot off. If your ball slips your hand or foot you will loose the stroke. You put your own ball one width of the mallet s head form the ball that has been croqueted and continue the game with 2 strokes from there. If you have been through all the hoops without hitting the start/finish peg you are a free-player which means that you no longer have to pass the hoops. A free-player always gets two strokes by croqueting another ball. It also gives two strokes if it is hit by another ball, but it can only be croqueted one time each turn, and you don t have to pass a hoop first. When both teammates are through the court and are free-players, they both have to croquet all the other balls on the court. Then they both have to hit the start/finish peg, and the game is won.
