1 Rules and Information Supplement for the 2015 Hawaii State Sea Perch Challenge. Version Feb 2015 Unless specifically addressed in this supplement, the 2015 Hawaii State Sea Perch Challenge will follow the rules and guidelines as spelled out in the 2015 National Sea Perch Challenge rules and a complete description of the obstacles is located at: If there is a conflict in the National rules, the 2015 Hawaii State Sea Perch Challenge Rules and Information Supplement will be the guidance document. General Rules 1) On Competition Day there will be three competition events: two Pool Events and the Poster and Video Presentation Judging. There will be both a Stock and Open Class that follow the national guidelines. 2) There will be four complete sets of obstacles. All four will be for competition. Each robot team will perform 2 Obstacle Course and 2 Finesse. Scores will be posted to determine the top three finishers. At the end of the day the top three finishers will compete side by side in a final round to determine the overall champion. In the event of a tie, the robot with the fastest obstacle course will be the victor. The highest seeded robot will get to choose which course/lane they want for the final competition, the second will choose second, the third robot will compete on the remaining course/lane. 3) In the Stock Class, trophies will be awarded to the top three overall robots based on the best-combined scores from all three events. In the Open Class there will only be a 1 st Place trophy 4) Additional Recognition in the Stock Class: a) Innovative Design Award: 1 st Place Trophy for most innovative robot design. b) Fastest Obstacle Course : 1 st Place Trophy c) Most Points Finesse : 1 st Place Trophy d) Best Combined Poster and Video Presentation: 1 st Place Trophy e) Poster Presentation: Ribbon for 1 st 5 th place poster f) Video Presentation: Ribbon for 1 st 5 th place video presentation g) Most Points: High School team: 1 st Place Trophy 5) Only four team members are allowed on the pool deck during a competition. The driver must remain at the side/end of the pool, the spotter can change positions to obtain the best vantage point to help guide the robot but cannot interfere with the other teams robot or team members. 6) All team members must wear shoes with rubber soles on the pool deck. 7) Nothing other than the SeaPerch ROV may be put into the pool. The robot will start in the pool events from the side of the pool being held by a team member. For the Obstacle Course, time will stop when the robot touches the wall.
2 8) Each SeaPerch ROV must be presented for a compliance check during check-in on Saturday morning prior to entering the pool. All attachments and how they function must be presented to the compliance judge. At that time the robot will receive a compliance number, this will be the robot number for the event. The number will be written on the robot with a waterproof pen, this piece must remain on the robot for the entire event. 9) The obstacle judge must also approve each robot before competing in each pool event. If the obstacle judge rules that the robot cannot compete in the event, the judge may issue one of two rulings. a) On the spot correction - the robot may not leave the pool area. The team has up to one minute to make the correction. b) Disqualification This ruling is final, even if the robot can be modified quickly. A disqualification can result from poor sportsmanship, interfering with another team, an unauthorized modification of the robot after the compliance check. The judge will explain the ruling to the team, the team and the robot must exit the pool area. This should never happen and will be avoided at all cost. 10) Robot configuration can be changed between events. Only parts approved during the compliance inspection can be used. The obstacle judge has the final approval before each pool event. The part with the compliance number must remain on the robot. 11) Time to complete the competition is very tight. With this many robots, if each robot took and extra minute, it could add up to several hours. a) The pool events are limited to 6 minutes with the following breakdown: 2- minute setup, 3-minute competition, and 1-minute removal. i) 2 minute Set Up at the end of 2 minutes, even if the team is not ready, the event clock will start (3 minutes). The robot can still be placed in the water and complete the course. At the end of five minutes, (2 min setup, 3 min event) the robot will be gently removed from the course. For the Obstacle Course the robot will receive a time it took to complete the course or 3 minutes and 1 second, which ever is less. ii) 3 minute Event Competition (1) Obstacle Course - the robot has three minutes to complete the course, at the end of three minutes, if the robot did not complete the course, the robot will be gently removed from the course and the team receive a time of 3 minutes and 1 second. (2) Finesse the robot has three minutes to score as many points as it can. At the end of three minutes only objects not touching a robot will be counted as scored. An object touching a robot at the end of three minutes is not scored even if the robot detaches or drifts away at the conclusion of three minutes. iii) 1 minute Removal The robot is removed from the course and pool area. 12) The event/obstacle judge is the final word on time limit infractions.
3 13) In the event that a vehicle is inadvertently interfered with during a competition, the event pool judge will have the sole authority to allow the team to compete later in the round. Malfunctions will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis but most likely will not qualify for an additional try at the obstacle. (Example: The obstacle fell on the robot) 14) Competition Events a) Obstacle Course - The submerged obstacle course involves large rings (22" minimum diameter), oriented in any direction, through which the vehicles must travel. Teams must navigate through the obstacle course, surface, then re-submerge and return through the course to the end. Consideration of optimal maneuverability, control and speed should be given when constructing your SeaPerch (thruster placement and orientation, tether attachment, buoyancy and ballast, etc) and control box. Scores for this round will be based on the fastest time for successfully navigating the obstacle course. Additionally the robot will receive 1 point for each ring successfully navigated within the three minutes. The robot must be completely through the ring to score the point. b) Finesse - The course consists of three obstacles. One requires the robot to touch a plate through small diameter hole. Pushing this plate causes an arm to rise. Each target is worth one point. Another obstacle requires the robot to pick up a pipe with a nylon rope and placing it in a holder of varying diameters. Each pipe can only be scored once, meaning once it is resting in the holder another pipe must be grabbed. The largest holder is worth one point, the medium holder is worth two points and the smallest holder is worth three points. Max points available on the event are 15. Finally there is the ladder. One point is given from moving the slider from one side of the rung to the other, completely covering the painted surface. A maximum of five points are available. Robots can do the finesse obstacles in any order that they want. They must accumulate as many points as possible in three minutes. In the event of a perfect score under three minutes, the time elapsed will be used to rank. 15) Poster and Video/Verbal Presentation - Poster will be displayed in the Banquet Area of Club 14 for the duration of the event. Presentation Videos, once scored by the judges, will be displayed on a continuous loop in the Club 14 Banquet Area. The Video and Poster score will be combined. They will be ranked 1 st through 6 th place. After 6 th place all Video and Poster Presentations will receive a score of 7. a) Poster (1) The maximum poster size is 48 X 36. (2) The poster must be free standing. (3) Should answer the following questions: (a) What did your SeaPerch need to do, and how did you design it to meet that requirement? (b) Describe the build and test process. (c) What did your team learn from the testing and evaluation of the abilities of your SeaPerch prior to the challenge?
4 (d) What changes, if any, did your team choose to make to the design and why? (4) Video Presentation Middle School and Below only (a) The maximum video length is 2 minutes (b) Must be in MPEG MP4 or Quicktime Movie format and upload to to the andy@seaperch-hawaii.org by the 19 th of Feb. A back up on a USB thumb drive or disc could be brought as well. (c) The video should do the following: (i) Provide and overview of the robot (ii) Discuss the design features of the robot (iii) Discuss any changes that were made due to testing (iv) Show the team members understanding of the build they completed and the related engineering concepts. (d) The video will not be judged on: (i) Sound Quality (ii) Video Quality (iii) Special Effects (5) Verbal Presentation High School ONLY (a) Be prepare to speak to a panel of engineers regarding: (i) Provide an overview of the robot (ii) Discuss the design features of the robot (iii) Discuss any changes that were made due to testing (iv) Show the team members understanding of the build they completed and the related engineering concepts. Scoring will be based on the overall placement of the competing teams in each of the three categories (Obstacle, Finesse, and the combined Poster and Video), with the team having the lowest point total being the highest seed in the final competition. Scoring ties will only be broken where trophy places require. (i.e. ties will not be broken when ties do not effect top 3 results in any event or class overall) Finesse ties to the same point or time total will be broken by rerunning the ladder portion only head to head. Class Ties will be broken based upon the best performance in the following priority: 1) Finesse 2) Poster 3) Obstacle 16) Any other ties not covered by this will be brokered by a team of well trained monkeys with darts. General Information Location: US Coast Guard Base Honolulu, 400 Sand Island Parkway, Honolulu Hawaii. Base Honolulu is a restricted access environment. Each team must
