1 0 Los Angeles, CA Director of Golf Hillcrest Country Club is a high-end luxury club located in the heart of Westside of Los Angeles, adjacent to Beverly Hills, Century City, and Westwood. Since 1920, it has served as an oasis for its members to enjoy exceptional quality golf, tennis, recreation, and superb dining facilities away from the adjacent busy life of the city. The Club recently completed a major renovation and expansion of its facilities, including a pool, fitness center, dining patio, golf course improvements, and dining solarium. Hillcrest members are leaders in all walks of business activity: entertainment, real estate development, retail and wholesale commercial enterprises, finance, doctors, lawyers and other professionals. The historic magnitude of the membership s charitable activities and donations spreads across all forms of philanthropy affecting the human condition and spirit, including the worlds of art, education, science, religion, culture, hunger, medicine preservation, recreation, epidemics, natural disasters and social justice, involving adults, children, veterans, survivors, seniors, immigrants and more. Hillcrest members have been leaders on many community Boards, Commissions, Committees, and other organizations including its most celebrated charitable activity, the United Jewish Fund, and one of its oldest endeavors, the support of a 9-hole golf course at the West Los Angeles Veterans Home that its members paid for and had built in 1946 for the returning Veterans. The impressive early history of the Club has been captured in the Club s recent article celebrating its 90 th Anniversary in Hillcrest Country Club was founded in 1920 by a foursome from the San Gabriel Country Club in the eastern portion of Los Angeles County. They located a 142 acre plot of land on an unpaved road called Pico Boulevard in the middle of undeveloped rolling hills dotted with oil towers. 2 From here begins the storied history of Hillcrest Country Club, the golf club and social arena for Hollywood s Jewish actors, singers, songwriters, producers, and movie moguls in the golden age of film. As members of the Club, Hollywood comedians such as Al Jolson, Eddie Cantor, George Jessel, Jack Benny, George Burns, Groucho and Harp Marx, Milton Berle, Danny Thomas, and Danny Kaye, quickly carved out a niche of their own, a special place at Hillcrest where many of them would gather to eat lunch together nearly every day when in town; this was known as The Round Table. Hillcrest is proud of its members from the golden era of Hollywood and honors those great personalities by hosting a tournament called The Round Table. This popular event provides recognition for their many contributions to the club s history and character. Amenities: 18-hole golf course 7-hole pitch and putt course 12-hole practice putting green 12 stall driving range 9 hard court tennis courts One Har Tru (clay) court New 25 meter Olympic size pool with changing rooms and cafe Fitness Center Club Facts: Proprietary Members: 585 Total Membership in all categories: 1046 Position Description The Director of Golf (DoG) directs the total golf operation of Hillcrest Country Club, managing the overall sequence of service for all members and guests, from arrival through departure and followup. The DoG oversees golf programs and activities including the golf shop, all practice facilities, the on-course service stations, golf cart operations, the bag room, our Caddy program and supervision of the Golf Professionals. He or she plays an important leadership role on HCC s management team. Operating at both a tactical and strategic level, the DoG manages and continuously develops all aspects of the golf business, providing a clear vision for its strategic direction. He or she takes personal responsibility for identifying additional sales and marketing opportunities, the delivery of consistent excellence in customer service and maximizing revenues and profitability. The DoG works in partnership with the Golf course Superintendent regarding maintenance of the golf course, and follows the overall goals and objectives established by the relevant Member committees and General Manager. An experienced leader, the DoG will be considered the subject matter expert in the technical aspects of administration and management of golf operations. The club has only employed 3 head pros in its 93 year history. The current Head Professional has been at the club for Kopplin & Kuebler, LLC Page 2

3 34 years and will be transitioning into the role of Pro Emeritus, creating room for a new leader to take over the golf operation, while continuing to provide lessons to members. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Provide a clear vision of where the golf business is going and the route the Club will need to follow in order to get there. Liaise closely with other senior managers within the organization to ensure the business development strategy for golf operations fits with the overall corporate strategy and supports/is supported by those of other business areas. Develops policies, procedures and documented standards to ensure a consistently superior Five Star service experience in all aspects of golf operations. Ensures documented training of all golf operations team members on an on-going basis, with a particular focus on service, safety and merchandising operations. Prepare and regularly review the business plan for golf operations, producing supporting operational plans for different business areas that will contribute to achieving the objectives set out in the strategic plan. Develop detailed fiscal plans and annual budget proposals with supporting data for inclusion in the overall Club budget. Prepare capital expense budgets to support achievement of objectives. Establish, monitor and analyze operating budgets and take prompt corrective action to address variances, ensuring each operating area is maximizing efficiency and profitability. Keep abreast of changes in the environment in which the organization operates and use this knowledge to identify new business development opportunities for all areas of golf operations. Develop short and long range plans for improvements to the club facilities and courses. Identify areas in which the service can improve, and develop creative solutions to address those areas. Consult with the GM about golf course and practice range operations, maintenance and rules. Cooperate with the Grounds Superintendent about maintenance issues that affect the playability of the golf course. Lead and direct the administration and management of daily operations, including the collection and charging of fees for all golf related activities, the purchasing of product, supplies and amenities, and the conducting of inventory on a regular basis. Under direction of GM and the appropriate board committees, implement and administer a system governing the start of play and handicap system. Participate as requested in the establishment and supervision of facility rules. Personal accountability for interpreting and enforcing the Rules of Golf ; Club policies, rules and regulations; and the by-laws governing play. Oversee the care and maintenance of all physical assets, inventory and resources of the golf facility. Responsible for the creation of standard operating procedures around storage and transportation of Club property related to golf. Select, train, evaluate and supervise golf personnel including golf pros, outside services, golf operations managers and staff in including golf shop and cart barn. Oversees all merchandising activities, including purchasing, receiving, merchandising, marketing, selling and accounting to ensure continual growth in the profitability of the golf retail operation. Produce regular reports on financial performance, stock control, utilization of facilities, sales and marketing activity and human resources. Coordinate and oversee programs and activities at the service facility including daily play, tournaments, special groups, instruction programs and merchandise sales, with the goal of continuously improving all such areas. Continually grow and develop the Club s Junior Golf program to make it a program of repute within the golf industry, and a powerful attraction to prospective members. Organize and conduct Club tournaments and related events, coordinating with Catering Director for food and beverages needs of all golf functions. Provide and supervise marshals, and select and distribute prizes for all golf related tournaments and events. Kopplin & Kuebler, LLC Page 3

4 Work with Golf teaching professionals to train, design and conduct golf clinics for the Club. Resolve all Member and staff complaints, ensuring a written record of the complaint is logged with GM, HR and the appropriate committee chair. Conduct all required meetings, adhering to standards for the filing of meeting attendance and agenda with HR. Responsible for initial 90 day training for new hires and temporary employees, ensuring that all training assignments have been completed, recorded and filed, including departmental safety training. Responsible for ongoing training and development of staff including ensuring attendance at all required training (e.g. sexual harassment, safety training, etc.) Coach and counsel staff to ensure that standards of operation are being met at all levels of service, and a healthy work environment is being achieved. Draft and administer corrective action as needed, with Human Resources, ensuring consistent and accurate feedback is provided in a timely way and that detailed accounts of disciplinary issues are recorded and filed with copies to the GM and Director of HR. Oversee staffing schedules and compliance with all rules and procedures, ensuring members are well served and labor costs are maintained. Ensure all staff receives appropriate rest and meal breaks. Maintain an expertise in Club safety policies and procedures, including active CPR/First Aid Certification. Serve as a member of the Safety committee and conduct monthly safety training for Golf Operations staff and any new hires. Play golf with members of all skill levels to generate enthusiasm, with a particular focus on new members. Maintain a visible presence on the course during peak times of play. OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES Attend all required meetings, training sessions, workshops, and conferences as assigned. Attend national and sectional conferences and meetings, merchandise shows, educational and professional shows to encourage development and to enhance the quality and image of the Club. Provide effective communication, such as articles, features, and announcements for the purpose of marketing and promoting golf activities. Facilitate verbal and written communication among members, department heads and golf operations to educate and ensure clarity and understanding of golf course and country club related information. Actively participate in state and national professional organizations, as well as affiliated organizations, in order to promote the game of golf and the Club course. Represent the Club in area professional events including local, state or national events with the approval of the GM. Ensure Point of Sale system is maintained and used to maximize efficiency, including testing the POS to ensure proper function and responsibility for implementation of training, upgrades and new procedures. Work periodically on special projects as assigned, sometimes outside the context of the golf course, but which the incumbent possesses the ability to perform adequately. Candidate Qualifications & Experience Essential: Bachelor s Degree or higher from an accredited college or university with major course work in golf administration, parks and recreation administration, hospitality, business administration or another closely related field; and/or minimum 5 years of experience in golf course administration, with at least 3 years as a manager, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Class AA member of PGA or higher in good standing. Maintain active Membership in appropriate professional organizations. Previous experience in a similar luxury environment. Strong knowledge of the golf profession and the rules of golf, along with the ability to interpret and render an accurate decision on all said rules. Kopplin & Kuebler, LLC Page 4

5 Previous experience with yield management, budgeting, revenue forecasting, capital expenditure and marketing plans. Able to demonstrate strong, effective public relations and communication skills both verbally and in writing with all stakeholders Experienced at writing business reports. IT literate with experience of relevant software applications and computerized POS; Management systems/data storage and tee time s systems; proficient in Microsoft Office. An organized and proactive leader, able to supervise and resolve problems quickly and effectively A passion for training and developing, coaching and counseling of team members.
