Official ArchAeolympics Rulebook Spring 2016 The Greater the Difficulty the more glory surmounting it ~ This Rulebook will act as the official guidelines for all the 2016 ArchaeOlympics. It also contains a section of learn more links that archaeoletes and coaches can reference to learn more about the skills and information needed for each competition. Welcome to the second annual Arkansas ArchaeOlympics, we are looking forward to seeing old and new competitors this year as we refine and expand the games! Because the Arkansas Archeological Survey has several projects running this March during the traditional Spring Break period, the ArchaeOlympics committee has moved the competition date up to March 12 th. We hope many of you take the opportunity to volunteer on the Spring Break Digs (for more information go to The ArchaeOlympics believes deeply in the team effort collaborative nature of and so we ask that all enter into the completion with a and committed sense of fair play respectful sportsmanship. Don t you can always work to beat next The ArchaeOlympics committee has chosen to focus on just two competitions in addition to the atlatl and spear. Although there is one less game this year, the remaining games will be more intensive and likely require some effort on archaeoletes to study up before hand! We have provided some reference links on the last page, but we encourage you to talk to your professors or area professionals for some advice. Remember, there are Arkansas Archeological Survey research stations around the state, as well as information on our website While we have tried to work out every issue, we recognize that unforeseeable may occur - like massive ice storm in March - trust it has happened before at Mounds Archeological State Park. the event that weather or some problem arises and the event has to cancelled we will make every effort find a new date for the However, given that archaeology is carried out in even some of the extreme conditions, it will take a the games to be

2 nd Annual Archaeolympics Registration and Regulations for Teams 1: All teams must register with Dr. Elizabeth Horton at the Arkansas Archeological Survey-Toltec Mounds Research Station no later than March 7 th at 5pm. Each team must have an official coach who will act as a representative of their team at the games and in all communication with Dr. Horton. Registration should include all names; and which events each team will compete in, individuals who will be competing. Please make sure the line of the is ArchaeOlympics 2. Teams must consist of at least 4 and no more than 6 (this number does not include coaches who are ineligible to compete). have more than one team but each must have its own coach (who can also a competing archaeolete) and registered 3. All competitions will end 4:00pm at which point will be an awards Please be mindful that closes at 7.

3 Atlatl and Spear Competitors and audience alike enjoyed some great weather for the 1st Annual ArchaeOlympic games! Come out and see if the champions can hold their gold! This competition will consist of five rounds. Each archaeolete will have a chance to throw three spears in each round; all three throws will be added to give a cumulative score for that round. Scores will be tallied by an official scorekeeper at each throw - should we run out of spears, they will be retrieved and a new target will be set as each throw will already have been tallied. In each successive round after the first, the highest 5, and then 4, then 3, then 2 scorers will move on. The accuracy competition will be done at a distance of 15 meters. The closer to the center of the target the spear hits, the higher the score (targets have set increment scores printed on them). Misfire rule; If an archaeolete misfires (spear slips from atlatl notch before throw is complete) and the spear land less than 2 meters from the throw line, the archaeolete may re-throw that spear. Judges will be final arbiters on whether a throw is a misfire or not. While this event will have an overall individual winner, each team member s scores will be pooled and there will be a team level gold, silver and bronze as well. This score will also be added to the total team score for overall gold! (If registration exceeds expectations; the ArchaeOlympics committee reserves the right to split the Atlatl and Spear competition into flights so that at the end of the day, the top scorers from each flight will compete with each other st nd rd for 1, 2, and 3 place.)

2 nd Annual Archaeolympics Forage or Famish & What s For Dinner This competition tests archaeoletes knowledge of the subsistence resources and foodways of pre-european contact peoples of Arkansas as well as some of the most common Old World species that were introduced after European colonization. It is also designed to increase archaeoletes knowledge of the scientific nomenclature for plants and animals that are commonly recovered from both prehistoric and historic archaeological sites in Arkansas. Each team will have 15 minutes to complete each of these rounds. Only those team members registered to compete in each round may participate other team members must quietly observe. Each team must have at least two and no more than 4 members competing in each round. Round One: Know Your Woodland Period Native Plant Resources (Forage or Famish) In the first round of this competition teams will be asked to identify images and samples of five plants by common name (5pt), scientific name (10pts = 5pts for genus and 5pts for species yes there will be forgiveness in spelling but may cost you a few points depending on how close you get), and whether it was food, fiber, or had some other use (medicine/ritual) or some combination there of, and if it was ever domesticated or was a wild resource (5pt). Round Two: What s For Dinner? In the second round of the competition, teams will be given a list of the scientific names of ten commonly recovered plants and animals from archaeological sites during the Late Woodland period in Arkansas as well as some zingers such as plants that are sometimes recovered but are in fact toxic and were not consumed for food but used for fiber, ritual, or medicinal purposes, species (either/or plants and animals) that are not indigenous to the Americas and whose presence here today is the result of European colonization and species that were extinct by the Woodland Period. Each team must: 1. Give the common name of each of the plants or animals listed (5pts for each entry) and then 2. Make Dinner! Choose three species; two plants and one animal, which could be used in a single dish together. Survival depends on your choices. Beware, as noted above - not all the listed items are edible or available in the Late Woodland! Include a toxic item in your ingredients and your team will automatically perish! Include a species introduced after the Woodland Period, or that went extinct prior to it! and your team will also perish. Perishing in this round will result in the loss of points for this round. Last, failing to include exactly two plants / one animal will result in famish (i.e. listing two animals and one plant, or three of either plants/animals). Famishing will result in the loss of ½ the points from this round. Bonus lightening round: Each team will have 1 minute to give an approximate geographic location for the origins of any non-native (to the SE US) domesticated species (1pt) and approximetely how long ago said species was domesticated (1pt).

5 Picking up the Pieces This competition will test archaeoletes knowledge of basic ceramic analysis. This game will also take place in two rounds. In the first round, archaeoletes will need to apply some core analytic methods to successfully pass the round how successful each team is will be evident in round two. Teams will have 15 minutes to complete the first round and 5 minutes to complete the second round. Each round will require at least 2 archaeoletes and no more than 4. Round 1: Each team will be presented with a pile of sherds. The pile must first be successfully sorted into groups of like materials (10pts), with all rim fragments and decorated sherds (anything other than plain surfaces) sorted out separately. Rim sherds will be used to identify basic vessel types and size present in your team s assemblage; there will be at least 3 types in each pile (5pts each). Archaeoletes will need to know how to find the orientation of a rim, and how to create a rim profile, and how to get an approximate rim diameter. Each team will then need to assess whether or not they have enough fragments from any one vessel to reconstruct at least a significant portion of it. Round 2: Each team will have 5 minutes to quickly assess the other teams piles of body sherds to see if they can find any potential missing pieces to their vessel. Each team will then have10 minutes to reconstruct their vessel! Sherds will need to be laid out according to their refit position on the vessel so judges can assess the reconstruction. Teams will have work together fast and effectively to get as much of their vessel reconstructed as possible. Scoring will be based on how much total of the vessel has been reconstructed with a base line of 15 pts for ¼, 25 pts for ½ and 50 pts for entire. Added points will be given for completing entire selected portions of a vessel even when the entire vessel is not competed such as the rim, base, or a handle. If two or more teams come in close, the total number of refitted sherds will be used to determine a 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd place.
