1 Golf Coaches Handbook Players Code of Conduct It is expected that all players demonstrate knowledge of the USGA Rules of Golf, proper golf course etiquette, that they display good sportsmanship at all times and that all coaches support this expectation. Dress Code Players should be made to understand that they represent their schools each time they play. They are expected to wear shirts with collars (tucked in), golf shoes or sneakers and slacks (no jeans or cargo pants). Hats should be worn straight. Bermuda shorts may be worn if course rules permit. Player Behavior During matches or team practices, players will refrain from cursing, throwing or breaking clubs, smoking, fighting, and intentionally distracting other players or any other unsportsmanlike conduct. Player Disqualifications Grounds for Disqualification are listed in the USGA Rules of Golf Any violation of the rules or break in the code of conduct witnessed by a coach or golf course personnel can result in player disqualification. Any player not finishing this round, for any reason will be disqualified. All disqualifications receive a score of 65. ** The use of U.S.G.A. conforming rangefinders is permitted. (Measuring distance only) ** The use of smartphones is NOT permitted. 1

2 Coaches Responsibilities Home coach is responsible for bringing the AED to the course. Coaches must assure there is communication with each playing group and that the AED is kept within a four minute brisk walk to all players. Visiting coach must call the home coach the night before to confirm; a meeting time, place, number of golfers to bring, presence of AED and any additional course restrictions. Coaches should enforce the players' code of conduct. Coaches must check with the course on match days to ensure playability. Coaches should try to get their team to the course in a timely manner. Coaches must agree on course rules or ground rules prior to each match and relay this information to their players. Home coach should collect and save all official signed scorecards from each match. After each match, both coaches must review, tally, agree and sign the official score sheet. Once both coaches have signed the official score sheet, the match is official and the results may not be changed. The winning coach must report the scores to the official scorer, preferably by fax or , or either phone or snail mail, by the end of each week. (every 2 weeks is ok) The winning coach also calls Newsday with results by 8:30 PM following each match ( ). Coaches should have a working knowledge of the USGA Rules of Golf and carry a rulebook to all matches for reference. 2

3 Matches Scoring All league matches are nine holes and will be scored using stroke play according to USGA rules. Six players from each school comprise a team. However a team may compete with Five players. Coaches will list their players 1 through 6, strongest to weakest and opposing numbers go head to head. If playing with Five, player number 6 is considered a forfeit. Each head to head match is worth one point toward the team point score (1/2 point each for ties). At, the completion of the match three additional points are awarded to the team with the lowest five man total score. Matches are worth a total of Nine points. In event of a Tie (4 ½ - 4 ½) add all six scores and compare total. If this does not break the tie, the match is officially scored a tie. A three-way match will only be counted once toward individual and, team stroke statistics, but it will count as two matches on the W/L record. Players are responsible for entering hole-by-hole scores while coaches (the scoring committee) are responsible for the addition. USGA Rule 6-b and

4 Incomplete matches Incomplete Matches If four of the six matches reach completion, an official match will be declared and a winner established according to the following scoring procedures: o If four of the six matches have completed, and the remaining two matches have finished a minimum of 6 holes, six points will be awarded for the individual matches. The completed matches will be scored under normal procedures; the incomplete matches will be scored through the last completed hole. Each team's cumulative score for the four completed matches will determine which team will be awarded the 3 points for total team score. o If four of the six matches have completed, and the remaining two matches have not completed a minimum of 6 holes, the match will be determined based on the four completed matches. One point will be awarded for each match for a total 4 points. Team score based on sum of four matches for a total of 3 points for a combined total of 7 points. o Players will not be penalized for participating in incomplete matches when it comes to qualifying for the county tournament. Coaches must make the records keeper aware of incomplete matches. o Incomplete matches will be used to determine a team's won-loss record. They will not be used for adjusted team scores. 4

5 Qualifying for the County Championship 128 golfers from the fall and spring seasons will qualify for the county tournament, usually held the third week in May. The number of golfers qualifying from each season is proportionate to the number of teams competing in the fall and spring seasons. Players finishing in the top ten in both the fall and spring according to their adjusted scoring averages will earn all-county honors. Players advancing to day two of the tournament will also all earn all-county status. Players finishing in places in both fall and spring according to their adjusted scoring averages will earn all-county honorable mention honors. Remaining players who have qualified for the county tournament based on their adjusted averages will earn all-conference honors. Qualifying As A Team Twelve (l2) teams will qualify for the county tournament. Conference winning teams from the Fall and Spring automatically qualify for the counties. Conference Champions are determined by W/L record. In event of a tie for conference champion, both teams will share the title and receive awards. The team with the better head to head record will represent the conference in the county tournament. If they have split their head to head matches, the team with the lowest stroke average will represent the conference in the counties. The other team can still qualify as a wild card based on adjusted stroke average. In addition, a number of "wild card" teams will qualify based on their adjusted team average. The number of wild card teams that qualify from the Fall and Spring will be based on the percentage of teams playing in that season. If a team qualifies five players, they will be considered qualified as a team and they may compete for the team title. They will be allowed to bring a 6th non-qualified player to complete their team. This in essence adds a thirteenth team to the team competition. 5

6 A team may substitute a player or players for the second day of the County Championship. Qualifying As an Individual Individual players must compete in, and post a score in 70% of the teams matches to qualify for the county tournament. Number of Team Matches Number That Must Be Played Qualifying As an Individual All players who have played in the required number of matches will be listed from lowest to highest adjusted stroke average. (See table above) Players from those teams that have qualified will be removed from the list. From the names remaining players will be chosen proportionally taking into account the number of schools playing in the fall and spring seasons. The stroke average of the last player chosen will determine the cut-off for individual qualifiers. Any player from teams that have qualified whose stroke average is at or lower than the cut-off number will also compete as an individual. No team can qualify more than six players. Only those players competing as individuals can be considered for the state team that competes in June at Cornell. Any player competing as an individual (making the stroke average cut) will be awarded All Conference honors. 6

7 County Tournament The Nassau County Tournament is a two-day, 36 hole tournament with both a team and individual cut after day 1. Tee times are scheduled by season and according to players adjusted final stroke averages. All coaches are expected to attend and to work the two-day tournament. Coaches' duties may include; scoring, marking, rules interpretations, scoreboard, etc. The top 9 individual players after day 2 will make the state team that will represent Nassau County at Cornell the last weekend in May. The 10 th player will be named as an alternate and will travel and compete in the State Tournament only if one of the top 9 players cannot compete. In the case of ties, extra playoff holes may be needed to determine final places and the alternate. The Team Championship will be determined by the best two day total after dropping the highest score each day. If there is a tie in the team totals after day two, the sixth score will be added from day 2. If still tied, the sixth score from day 1 will be added. The winner of the team championship will compete in an 18- hole match against the Suffolk County Champion for the Long Island Championship. Long Island Championship The Nassau County Champion team will play the Suffolk County Champion in an 18 hole, stroke play match during the last week in May. 7

9 Player Responsibilities at the County Championship All players must check in ½ hour prior to their tee time. All players must know their starting time. o Being late for your starting time will result in disqualification if the next group on the tee has already begun to tee off. All players must be properly dressed. Players must keep their own scorecard. Scores must be reported to the marker/scorer after each hole. Players must review their hole-by-hole score at the end of nine holes. Players must know and play by the rules of golf. Coaches may not be asked for any rulings. When in doubt, play two balls and ask for ruling at the end of play. Players must watch the actions of the other players in their group. Any rules infraction must be identified before the next hole is played. Players must sign the official scorecard at the end of play. Signing an incorrect scorecard, one that is lower than your actual score will result in disqualification. 9

10 Coaches' Responsibilities at the County Championship Be present and work both days. Arrive at the Tournament site ½ hour before the first tee time each day. If your team qualifies the team should arrive ½ hour before the first golfer s tee time. Make sure all golfers from your team: Report on time, properly dressed. Are reminded of tournament rules and course etiquette. Coaches acting as markers are to: Keep spectators the proper distance behind the players and there is no coaching. Keep accurate score. Check after each hole and tally after each nine holes. Verify scores with players. Do not get involved in rules decisions. Stay 200 yards ahead on tee shots to spot balls. Keep up with the group ahead. Have players sign official scorecard at end of the round. Report accurate scores to the tournament committee at completion of the round. Be available to assist the tournament committee at the end of each day. 10
