1 The Carmuirs News July 2013 General Manager s Update Championship Week Wow! What a week the Club Championship was. Congratulations to our 2013 Club Champions Ryan Campbell & Louise MacGregor. I had a great week refereeing a number of scratch matches where I was shown how the course should be played. There is a lot less activity in the rough than when I play! I was however jealous not to be playing since once more, Matt and his team had presented the course in excellent condition. On the Saturday I refereed the Handicap match between Charlie Penman and Kenny Dow where the golf was just as competitive and finished in favour of Charlie after the second sudden death playoff hole. Congratulations also to Margaret Burns, winner of the Ladies Handicap. As an additional bonus, I had the joy of watching Stuart Irving (with Stuart Murray on the bag) take on Ryan Campbell. With youngsters like this in our Club the future is in safe hands. The Evening Presentation was very well attended and the Champions First Dance was almost as memorable as the golf! My thanks to all who refereed and gave up their time, for the Club, to make these finals such a special event. Also thanks to Bill Clark who acted as starter all week he is just the man for the job. We would certainly welcome some new faces amongst the referees in the Club and please give some thought to volunteering next year. A great way to improve your knowledge of the game is to download the R & A Rules app for your smart phone and play the rules quiz. This will also help to improve your own game. Remember no one expects you to be John Paramour. Members Updates Members now have the ability to book up to 14 days in advance on the new Social Golf on line booking facility which we hope they will find helpful. At the moment 222 members have registered to use the facility and if anyone needs help in any way then please feel free to call me. The Council are making plans for a mid-term meeting for the end of July where a Meet the Manager and Question & Answer session will be held to give members a chance to discover how the Club is facing up to the challenges facing all Clubs in Invitations will follow shortly. I wish that I could have recorded Sean McAuley s address at the Championship Presentation never has there been a more heartfelt, sincere and more eloquent speech about the joys of being a member of FGC and why we are number one. Well said Sean Things to consider about our special Club and what makes us proud to be a member and bring friends to share the experience. When you join Falkirk Golf Club, you're joining hundreds of like-minded people who relish great golf, a full complement of club amenities, excellent food... Our members make our club. The people here at Falkirk pull together for each other. They're a fun-loving bunch who enjoys camaraderie and the time they spend together, but they're also generous of heart as well. Our members are the kinds of people who make their own ways in the world and are not pretentious about it. Until next month keep swinging and enjoy all the facilities of your Club. Vice Captain Peter Bryans has accepted the post of Vice-Captain and Hamish Rodger is looking forward to working with him in the future It is an honour to be asked to be Vice Captain of such a prestigious club as Falkirk Golf Club. I have only been a member of Falkirk Golf Club for 15 years, which is a short time compared to most of the members and have a hard job in following all the good past vice captains and captains I know that I have taken the position at a very difficult time due to the economic climate things are tough but I do believe that we are going in the right direction and building for the future. We have a really good course and have a family atmosphere about the club thanks to you the members. The changes we have made through the introduction of a Manager, change in caterers etc will increase the status of the club and bode well for the future. 3 The Antonine Course Our members have voted for the new name for the Wee Course to be the Antonine Course Adult Membership Offer A limited number of ADULT Antonine Course Memberships are now available for 100. The Course is in excellent condition all year round and is ideal for beginners, offering nine holes over various lengths with challenging small greens, deep rough in some areas and an occasional "slight" breeze to be contended with. Please contact our Club Manager for more information. Open Mixed Greensomes - R. M. Dickson Trophy - 28th July 2013 This new trophy has been donated by Robert s niece and lady member, Rae Callander. Robert unfortunately had to give up his membership due to ill-health and this trophy is in recognition of his time and work within the Club. Robert was a member of Falkirk Golf Club for over 60 years and many members will remember him as a past Captain, Match & Handicap Convenor and Social Convenor. Robert was also actively involved as a starter for the Ladies and Mixed Open events for many years. Full details are on the web site. 4 Gents Gents Scratch Championship Winner Ryan Campbell Gents Handicap Championship Winner Club Team - Inter Club League Charlie Penman This season's campaign got of to an excellent start with a fine away win at Dunblane with a 6-2 victory. Winning players on the night were Ryan Campbell, Jamie Lynch, Jim Leishman, Sean McAuley, Stuart Irving and Stuart Haddow. Hopes were therefore high when we faced reigning champions Glenbervie at home in the next match. Unfortunately, in closely fought match the team lost out by 5 matches to 3. The outcome of the match went down the final 2 games where we were narrowly edged out. Winning players on the night were Stuart Irving and Jim Leishman with Rhys Garrett and Steven Campbell gaining half a point each. The following week we played Grangemouth at home and the theme of closely fought matches continued. The outcome of the match came down to the final game where a Stuart Haddow win was enough to secure a drawn 4-4 match. Other victors on the night were Ryan Campbell, Jim Leishman and Chris Cox. The next match was played away to Kilsyth. Always a difficult place to get a positive result and unfortunately this again proved to be the case when the team lost 5 1/2 matches to 2 1/2. Chris Cox and Rhys Garrett won their matches and Sean McAuley securing half a point. The final 2 matches with be played away to Bonnybridge on Monday 8th July and at home to Falkirk Tryst on Monday 15th July at 5.30pm. Anyone wishing to come along and support the team at these games will be more than welcome. Page 4

5 Texas Scramble Weekend Congratulations to all those who took part in the Texas Scramble/4BBB weekend. Unfortunately no one managed to win any of the hole in one prizes that were kindly provided by SDM Motors and available to win over the two days. However I hope that everyone enjoyed the opportunity to win something special. 8 Invitational Greensomes The Invitational Greensomes will be held on the 27th July. Members can now book their times on the On Line Tee Booking system. Any sponsors or donations of prizes for this event would be greatly appreciated prior to the day. Would anyone wishing to donate or sponsor please contact the General Manager. Social Events On Saturday 10th August the Club is delighted to welcome back Gerry Anderson with his fantastic cabaret show. Gerry is one of the top entertainers in Scotland and its a night not to be missed. Tickets are sure to go quickly so reserve your places now by calling the Club on or give your names to the bar staff. Tickets are 10 per head and include a sandwich buffet. Support your Club!! Gossip Corner It is rumoured that a certain ex secretary was heard to cheer on his own brother in law s opponent at the handicap finals. The thought of having to congratulate him if he won and then spend a year having to bow to him was apparently just too much to contemplate. Greenkeeping News As noted in the fixture card, weather permitting, essential course maintenance, which will include "Hollow Coring" of the Greens will commence on Monday 29th July. The works when carried out at this time should have minimal disruption & be most beneficial to the course. The Forkers Matt now believes that there is more than one person responsible for not repairing their pitch marks so is inventing a repeating pitch fork projectile machine. He intends to distribute pitch forks vigorously and enthusiastically to anyone he finds isn t helping to keep our greens smooth and perfect. He will be aiming for the parts that hurt. Page 8
