4 The Garden Route The Garden Route is a beautiful destination to visit. Stretching from Mossel Bay to Storms River and encompassing the towns of Knysna, Oudtshoorn, George, Plettenberg Bay, Sedgefield and Wilderness this is a coastal wonder land with many fantastic things to see and do. It is called the Garden Route because of the spectacular flora and fauna that surrounds the coast line. There are many interesting things to do on the Garden Route including whale watching, cave exploration, elephant interactions, game drives, mountain passes, beaches, great restaurants and of course excellent golf at Fancourt, Pezula, Oubaai, Simola and Pinnacle Point. In this region, with it s diverse offering of activities, there is something for everyone. 5 Cape Town Mother Nature surpassed herself when crafting the Mother City. Perched between the ocean and the mountain, with a national park at its heart, there is nowhere like Cape Town. Affectionately referred to as The Mother City, Cape Town is the oldest city in South Africa and has a cultural heritage spanning more than 300 years. It is in Cape Town that the Rainbow Nation really covers the spectrum. Between beautiful Cape Dutch homesteads, traditional dancers with painted faces performing in the streets, the smell of spicy Malay cooking and the taste of a well-made wine, this city will fill your senses. Cape Town boasts the top tourism attractions in South Africa, all of which should appear on every visitors itinerary all year round, namely - Table Mountain - The Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens - The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront - Robben Island - The penguins at Boulders Beach - Cape Point The Cape of Good Hope Cape Town, with its many diverse cultures, natural wonders, and breathtaking beauty is a master at capturing peoples hearts.

6 The Stellenbosch Winelands The fertile green valleys of the Cape Winelands, origin of some of the world's most popular wines, is a must see experience in close proximity to Cape Town. Wine tasting, winemaking tours, excellent cuisine and historical landmarks collectively create an irresistible attraction in a region which boasts some of the most majestic scenery in South Africa. Most Cape wine estates are characterised by classic Cape Dutch-style buildings and vast vineyards with picturesque mountains as a backdrop. There is also a distinct European influence in a number of regions, thanks to the arrival of French Huguenot, Dutch and German settlers during the 16th century. Stellenbosch In 1679 Governor Simon Van der Stel undertook his first inspection tour of the outposts. On the 8 November he pitched his camp on the banks of the Eerste River ( first ) and was so enchanted with the surrounding that he decided to found a settlement there and call it Stellenbosch. This was the origin of South Africa s first town. The large number of oaks that line the streets have given the town the colloquial name Eikestad meaning City of Oaks. Today there are almost 600 farms in the Stellenbosch region. Many of these farms still boast the original Cape Dutch Homesteads built in the late 17th and early 18th century. Of these 600 farms, there are approximately 80 wine estates. Many thousands of visitors follow the wine routes every year, to taste and buy wine and experience the hospitality for which the valleys have become famous. The names of some of these estates are household words wherever fine wines are appreciated.

7 The Kruger National Park & Sabi Sand The Kruger National Park is 2.2 Million hectares and is the size of Switzerland. This spectacular reserve is South Africa s biggest and is the most well known national park in Southern Africa. Private concessions have been created and are totally open to the rest of the Kruger, hence some excellent game viewing. Due to the fact that the reserves are privately owned, (unlike many reserves throughout Africa) your Ranger is able to drive off road and this enables you to get up close and personal to the wildlife. Secondly because of the private ownership, these reserves are not governed by state law and therefore you are able to drive at night. The greatest advantage of an evening game drive is the increased likeliness of encountering the Big Five and in particular the Lions and Leopards as they hunt. Some animals and activities to look forward to: The Big 5 of Africa Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhino and Buffalo Wild Dog, Cheetah and Hyena Badgers, Scrub hare andbush Baby s Wide variety ofbirds Boma dinners, sundowners in the bush andpredators on the hunt!

12 Accommodation Jock Private Safari Lodge The concept of Jock Safari Lodge was born by the descendants of the Sir Percy Fitzpatrick and Niven Family. They used the funds of the trust of Sir Fitzpatrick, to build the lodge in the area close to where the history of Sir Percy Fitzpatrick & his dog Jock, took place. The Jock concession is the exact side profile of Jock the dog. In 1982 the Niven Family built a fence around the camp and that helped in preserving all the trees from destruction by visiting elephants. The conservation-conscious Niven family also planted indigenous trees within the fenced area & they have grown to create an ambience under a canopy of shade different to the exposed wilderness just outside of the lodge Morning and evening drives are performed in covered 4x4 Landrovers conducted by highly experienced rangers. Traversing through the reserve, the wildlife is sometimes staggering in its diversity. Enthralling sightings of elephants, a sea of buffalo horns rising from the grass as they lie resting in the growing heat as well as prides of lions, awaits one.

14 Pezula Golf Club (Knysna) Pezula Golf Club The area known as the East Heads has become the site of 18 spectacular championship holes of golf at Pezula and 250 hectares of well-planned residential properties and natural fynbos growth. The Pezula Golf Course is a Scottish links-style" course with a similar look to that of Gleneagles in the Scottish Highlands and Pebble beach on the Monterey coastline. Featuring cool-season grasses and five different tee placements to satisfy, challenge and reward all golfers. The varied coastal terrain offers a complete golfers' menu requiring a full range of shots with signature holes having been earmarked as the 13th and 14th.

15 Golf Fancourt Montagu (George-Garden Route) Montagu Golf Course - Fancourt The Fancourt Golf Resort was recently ranked in the top 10 Golf Resorts in the world, and is the only Golf Resort in South Africa with 3 breathtaking Golf courses, all originally designed by Gary Player. The Montagu course is a much celebrated parkland course and has been ranked as the number-one golf course in South Africa in the past. Play is restricted to members, their guests and hotel guests, so there is ample time and space to savour the Fancourt golfing experience. It is, however, always a good idea to book in advance to ensure that you get your desired tee time. Fancourt also boasts a world class Golf Academy, with outstanding practice and warm-up facilities.

16 Golf The Links at Fancourt (George-Garden Route) The Links - Fancourt The Links at Fancourt is without doubt the most impressive piece of golf design and construction ever in South Africa. Fancourt owner Dr Hasso Plattner, who took a very hands-on function in the creation, commissioned a golf course, which would not only be a thorough test for every golfer, but would also rank among the top courses in the world. Gary Player s design team spent months studying the classic links courses of Scotland and Ireland and then, armed with inspiration from the best that those countries had to offer, embarked on the ambitious task of recreating some of their finest holes to make a genuine links test on what was once an airfield. Golf Digest USA recently ranked The Links, the 34 th best Golf course in the world.

17 Golf Pinnacle Point (Mosselbay-Garden Route) Pinnacle Point Mossel Bay The Pinnacle Point Golf Course is something truly unique for the discerning golfer. This 18 hole championship golf course was designed by well-known South African golf course architect Peter Matkovich who opened the course together with top Irish Tour Professional Darren Clarke in November Darren Clarke, who was also involved with many aspects of the Pinnacle Point course design, has said that Pinnacle Point is... the best golf course on the planet. This Cliff top Fynbos Golf Course inspires the golfer to play this challenging layout with a level of respect due to its dramatic views and breath-taking terrain. The 72 par layout is characterised by 7 majestic holes that line the Indian Ocean rock cliffs, four of which are played over ocean and cliff.

18 What to pack for your Safari Many of you will remember the scenes from Out of Africa when Karen Blixen went on Safari with everything including the kitchen sink and the gramophone! Luckily for us the lodges are so well equipped you can leave your hairdryer at home. Rest assured that they will have one there for you. Clothing Jackets, Hats, Shoes Safaris are generally casual affairs, even at the high end camps, so no need to bring evening wear but you'll want to be warm and comfortable. Make sure all your clothes are not too bright in colour - that includes white. Bring clothes that are loose fitting and comfortable, and which you don't mind getting dirty. It will be chilly in the early morning when you start your game drive, so you'll need to layer up and bring a fleece. At night, there will usually be a campfire to keep warm, but you will want to wear long sleeves and trousers to cover yourself up and avoid those mosquitoes etc. Hats and caps - Broad brimmed hat as well as cap. Boots and socks for game drives and game walks - Many of the safari lodges include Bush Walks as part of your game drive activities. Leave the Jimmy Choos at home! Sandals or open footwear to wear around camp during the day. A small back pack orrucksack for game walks. A light jacket or windbreaker for game drives in summer - Even during the summer the temperatures can drop significantly after sunset. Don t forget long pants to protect you from the mosquitos. Pale and natural coloured clothing so you blend in with the bush - Look the part and wear neutral colours. For walking safaris do not wear white or cream. A sarong and swimming costume - Most of the camps have pools and even during winter months its hot enough to sun bathe and relax around the camp. Dress Code - The lodges in Africa have a very relaxed dress code. There is no need to dress up for dinner. Sometimes its nice to freshen up before dinner but sometimes the game viewing is so good that time does not allow for it! The weather in April On the Garden Route and in Cape Town, the average midday temperature during the months of February and early March is 82 degrees Fahrenheit. Night time temperatures are on average in the region of 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The Kruger Park is a little warmer during this time of the year, with an average midday temperature of 89 degrees Fahrenheit going down to 70 degrees fahrenheit in the evenings.
