Web-based Outreach Tools (New ) Developed and refined four web-based calculators for important topics on frequently asked turfgrass calculations

6 i. Turfgrass Fertilizer calculator: Provides information on how much nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium to purchase depending upon the size of the area being fertilized, target nutrient application rate and other relevant information. Additionally it calculates potential fertilizer costs. This calculator was revised (Spring 2011) to include liquid fertilizers in addition to granular materials. It also provides more helpful information on reading and interpreting a fertilizer label. ii. Turfgrass Seed calculator: This new tool is similar to the fertilizer calculator except that it allows the user to properly calculate seed needs for planting. In addition it provides the user with the ability to better understand the components of a seed label and select high quality seed for their intended needs. iii. Sand Topdressing calculator: This new tool helps turfgrass managers determine sand needs for topdressing, filling core aeration holes and sand bunkers. It was designed in response to the numerous questions regarding how much sand to use. Users input various criteria such as how large their area is, what depth they intend to apply the sand and also provides information regarding the importance of core cultivation and sand topdressing. iv. Lawn Turf Species Selector: This new tool was created in response to the numerous questions related to the best species to plant in lawns throughout the state. This tool allows the user to first identify the site criteria: user s must select their turf intended turf use (lawn or utility turf), environmental conditions (shade vs. sun), desired appearance/intended visual quality (low, medium, high), and the specific county where the turf will be cultivated. The tool then provides a list of potential species that could be planted on the site. In addition a color photo of the turf, a brief description of the species are provided. Additionally a printable copy of this description is also offered. It also provides a link to cultural and pest information for the North Central Region at the Lawn Problem Solver as well as the Purdue Turf Science program. Additional Web-based Outreach Materials The Lawn Problem Solver is a website for homeowners in the North Central Region. This site provides unbiased, scientifically based information regarding general lawn maintenance, integrated pest management and a self-guided diagnostic tool that enables the user to diagnose the potential cause of common lawn problems. Dr. Bigelow has contributed his expertise in terms of authoring content and providing color images for 14 topics including but not limited to: grass-like weeds, animal urine damage, mower scalping, thatch, fairy-ring, earthworms and ants. Purdue University Turfgrass Tips: Dr. Bigelow regularly writes seasonally appropriate tips for turfgrass managers related to recent developments in his research projects regarding nutrient management and other practical turfgrass management topics.

[Online] Available at Participation in Outreach Events and Conferences Extension/Outreach Presentations ( ) Since 2006 Dr. Bigelow provided 98 invited educational presentations at local, state, regional, national and International venues with over 8700 attendees. Below is a summary of the meetings in which he participated as a speaker. Invited Outreach Presentations ( ) Summary of Conference, Workshop, and Field Day Presentations International National Regional State Total Programs (number) Attendance Instructional-Counseling Responsibilities: Courses Taught with Primary Administrative Responsibility AGRY 110 Survey of Turfgrass Management: 1 credit This course is designed to introduce all new and interested freshman and transfer students to the Turfgrass Science program and provide an overview of the Agronomy Department degree options. Students are exposed to basic turfgrass management principles and an early relationship is developed between these new students and the Turfgrass Science faculty. Additionally, this course familiarizes the students with the many employment opportunities in the turfgrass industry, to help them confirm that they are on the correct career path. Dr. Bigelow enhanced this course by bringing junior and senior level Turfgrass Science students into the classroom to discuss their internship and summer work experiences, which encourages new students to find suitable experiences for their own practical training. This also fosters networking and mentoring opportunities between the upperclassmen and new students. AGRY 210 Fundamentals of Turfgrass Culture: 3 credits is an introductory course and open to any student who has an interest in maintaining turfgrasses. Students taking this course become familiar with the breadth of the turfgrass industry, learn the characteristics of the primary turfgrass species, and learn which species are appropriate for home-lawns in the region. By the end of the course the student should be able to properly select an appropriate turfgrass species for a lawn and establish and manage that species at any desired quality level using sound and environmentally responsible cultural practices. AGRY 211 Fundamentals of Turfgrass Culture Laboratory: 1 credit This companion laboratory to AGRY 210 provides practical learning opportunities for Turfgrass Science majors. Students learn vegetative turfgrass and seed identification, winter-weed identification, turfgrass fertilizers, fertilizer and pesticide label interpretation, summer annual

9 weedy grass control strategies, basic turfgrass establishment and maintenance practices and the mathematical calculations required for employment in the turfgrass industry. AGRY 311 Turfgrass Diagnostics: 1 credit This course is designed for students who want to further their diagnostic skills and compete in the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) and Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) annual Collegiate Turf Quiz Bowl Competitions. This course enhances and further tests the students skills in identification of turfgrass species, turfgrass weeds, seeds, and insect identification, ability to determine soil texture, and solve critical thinking questions related to turfgrass management practices. AGRY 510 Turfgrass Science: 3 credits This intermediate course builds on the concepts learned in Agronomy 210 and emphasizes the advanced cultural practices required to successfully manage an economically important recreational turfgrass area (e.g. golf course or athletic field) may enroll. In addition to lecture, a hands-on laboratory section offers practical exercises such as fertilizer spreaders, pesticide sprayer, irrigation equipment calibration and other items. The course also offers periodic field trips to local golf courses and athletic fields. Undergraduate Advising, Counseling and Recruitment Dr. Bigelow is the primary contact for all queries regarding Turfgrass Science studies at Purdue University. In this role he regularly corresponds with potential students via or the telephone and frequently meets in person with potential Turfgrass Science students and their families. He also serves as a mentor and shares the responsibility for the professional development and academic advising for the > 50 Turfgrass Science majors. His mentoring responsibilities include reviewing resumes, writing letters of recommendation for scholarships and employment, locating summer internships, and assisting them in post-graduation placement. Dr. Bigelow utilizes his relationships with professional turf managers in Indiana and across the nation to place students in positions that will maximize the student s qualifications and meet the employers needs as well as aid in post-graudate career placement. In addition, Dr. Bigelow is the faculty advisor to the Turfgrass Science Club. This club has approximately 20 undergraduate members. The club hosts guest speakers and industry representatives, who speak to the club on a variety of industry-related topics like preparing for major golf tournaments like the United States Open, management challenges at stadium athletic fields, or providing technical training on such topics as irrigation equipment troubleshooting. In addition, the club participates in Spring Fest and fields a nationally recognized team that competes at a very high level in the Golf Course Superintendents Association and Sports Turf Managers annual Collegiate Turf Quiz Bowl competitions.
