2 The Marilynn Smith Scholarshi Information for Scholarshi Alicants The Marilynn Smith Scholarshi is granted annually through The LPGA Foundation and the Marilynn Smith Scholarshi Fund. Established in 1999 by Marilynn with the roceeds of a golf tournament she organized, the objective of the Marilynn Smith Scholarshi is to rovide a scholarshi to a female high school senior who has layed golf in high school or in her community, and is lanning to lay golf at an accredited college or university in the United States. Secial consideration will be given to need-based alications. Ten scholarshis, in the amount of $5, each, will be awarded in BACKGROUND One of the original thirteen founders of the Ladies Professional Golf Association, Marilynn is known as one of golf s greatest ambassadors. Her sunny smile, outgoing ersonality, and natural enthusiasm earned her the well-deserved nickname, Miss Personality. Marilynn s varied contributions to the golf world are noteworthy. Originally from Kansas, Marilynn won three straight Kansas State Amateur titles ( ), as well as the Women s Intercollegiate title in 1949 while attending her alma mater, the University of Kansas. During her career as a ro, Marilynn had 21 career victories, including 2 majors, and became the first layer in LPGA history to record a double eagle. Marilynn also made history when she became the first female television commentator at a men s golf tournament in Additional accomlishments include serving as President of the LPGA from , co-founding the teaching division (now known as LPGA Teaching & Club Professionals), and organizing the first senior women s rofessional golf tournament, the Marilynn Smith Founders Classic. Marilynn heled conduct more than 4,000 clinics worldwide and instructed more than 250,000 golfers. As one of the true ioneers of women s golf and in recognition of her tireless efforts to romote the game of golf to women, Marilynn was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2006 through the Lifetime Achievement category. 3 INFORMATION FOR SCHOLARSHIP APPLICANTS The Marilynn Smith Scholarshi is granted annually through The LPGA Foundation and the Marilynn Smith Scholarshi Fund. The objective of the Marilynn Smith Scholarshi is to rovide scholarshi(s) to female high school seniors who have layed golf in high school or in organized junior golf rograms, and are lanning to lay cometitive golf at an accredited college or university in the United States. SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA 1. Alicants must be female and a U.S. citizen or U.S. legal resident. 2. Alicants must be high school seniors acceted to attend a full-time course of study at an accredited college or university in the United States. 3. Alicants must have layed in a minimum of 50% of a high school golf team s scheduled events or have layed cometitive junior golf regularly for the ast two years. 4. Alicants must have a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale. 5. Alicants must lan to lay cometitive golf at an accredited college or university in the United States. APPLICATION CRITERIA 1. 9 The Dinah Shore Scholarshi Information for Scholarshi Alicants The Dinah Shore Scholarshi was established in 1994 by The LPGA Foundation to honor the late Dinah Shore, a graduate of Vanderbilt University, a Hollywood entertainer, and an honorary member of the LPGA Tour Hall of Fame. The Dinah Shore Scholarshi is granted annually to a female high school senior who is ursuing a college education, but will not be laying collegiate golf. The Dinah Shore Scholarshi receives tremendous suort from Kraft Foods, Inc., the Fund s largest cororate donor, and the Kraft Nabisco Chamionshi, one of the LPGA Tour s four major chamionshis. One scholarshi in the amount of $5, will be awarded in BACKGROUND The daughter of (Russian) Jewish immigrant arents, Frances Rose Shore was born in 1916 in Winchester, Tennessee. At her arents urging, she ostoned her interest in a singing career to ursue an education, and graduated from Vanderbilt University in Shore then followed her dream and moved to New York, where she became known as Dinah, after the song she made famous. A beloved singer and actress for over fifty-five years, Dinah got her first break by singing with another hoeful singer, Frank Sinatra. Her early career coincided with World War II, and she erformed for the troos as the first female USO erformer overseas, as well as making over 300 Armed Forces Radio Broadcasts. Known for her southern charm and husky singing voice, Dinah had a string of hit records, a radio show, and in 1951, was the first woman to host her own television variety show, The Dinah Shore Show. She later hosted The Dinah Shore Chevy Show, sonsored by Chevrolet, where she made famous the sonsor s theme song, See the USA in Your Chevrolet. Desite a bout with olio as a young child, Dinah layed tennis and golf, and later established one of the most restigious golf tournaments on the LPGA Tour, the Colgate/Dinah Shore Winner s Circle Golf Chamionshi now the Kraft Nabisco Chamionshi, at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California. She tirelessly romoted the game and enlisted many of her show business friends to lay in ro-am tournaments. For her efforts on behalf of women s golf, after her death, Dinah Shore was made an honorary member of the LPGA Tour Hall of Fame. 16 The Phyllis G. Meekins Scholarshi Information for Scholarshi Alicants The Phyllis G. Meekins Scholarshi is granted annually through The LPGA Foundation and the Phyllis G. Meekins Scholarshi Fund. Established in 2006, the objective of the Phyllis G. Meekins Scholarshi is to rovide a need-based scholarshi to a female high school senior from a recognized minority background (see Scholarshi Criteria), who will be ursuing a full-time course of study and laying collegiate golf at an accredited college or university in the United States. One scholarshi in the amount of $1, will be awarded in BACKGROUND The Phyllis G. Meekins Scholarshi was established by her daughter, Denise McBride, to recognize her mother s notable contributions to the game of golf. Phyllis G. Meekins became a member of the LPGA in 1981 and earned LPGA Teaching and Club Professional life status in Known for her dedication to junior golf, Phyllis Meekins established the Phyllis G. Meekins (PGM) Golf Clinic, Inc. at Mount Airy s Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Philadelhia, Pennsylvania, in Under Meekins guidance, thousands of students have articiated in the PGM Golf Clinics, and through develoing life skills such as erseverance, goal setting, self-disciline and leadershi, many have also gone on to achieve significant success both in the classroom, as well as in their careers. An African-American, Meekins was inducted into the National Afro- American Golfers Hall of Fame in She also received the National Golf Foundation s Outstanding Service Award. Meekins was a firm believer in the concet, knowledge withheld is useless, and wanted her PGM clinics to share the beneficial asects of golf with all youth, esecially those who otherwise would not be exosed to the sort.
