By DG Linda Fischer Bruce On Sunday, March 26, almost 200 of you attended the Centennial Foundation Luncheon hosted at the Rivers Casino. PDGs Sue Kelly and Bob Rupp, and Sandra Rebholz, supported pulling off a most enjoyable and memorable event. Food was great, ambiance perfect, auction baskets were the best! We lined up all of our PDGs attending who shared their themes and years as a DG. Providing background music were Assistant Governors Barbara Johnson (with husband Rick) and Andy Dlinn. We had a dessert auction with the highest bidder for an almond torte going for $900! We raised about $7,300 for The Rotary Foundation. Stay tuned for more Foundation news as it develops! [We can't explain it, but the Rivers Casino has adopted the signature All Star blue color of Rotary District 7300 for its magnificent chandelier!--ed.] 1

During her exciting 38-year airline career, she lived in Philadelphia, New York and St. Louis, finally returning to Pittsburgh in She has been to countries all over the world England, France, Italy, Egypt, Israel, Greece, China, Japan, Thailand, and others but says there s no place like home. 4 Oakland Rotary Club Celebrates 73 Years A group of businessmen regularly met in the Oakland area of Pittsburgh before deciding to establish a Rotary Club. On February 17, 1944 the first meeting was conducted. Since then the club grew and expanded the membership beyond the business community to include both the academic and health professionals in the Oakland area. On February 23, 2017 the Oakland Rotary Club conducted their regular meeting, but it was far from the regular meeting. Special guests included the Folia Water presenters, Devlin Robinson and Dr. Theresa Dankovich (inventor of the silver nanoparticle water filter). Also since the topic was related to public health, Dr. Joanne Russell, Assistant Dean of the Graduate School of Public Health and Director of the Center for Global Health was in attendance along with Sarah McMullen, Director of Alumni Relations for Health Sciences at Pitt. Since the clean water project was one that the Pitt Rotaract Club could pursue, Ian Snyder, the President of the Rotaract Club, joined the meeting. The Folia Water filters offer a low-cost solution to providing clean waters in remote areas of developing countries. They have conducted pilot programs and are now at the stage to expand the program. Part of their focus is on the development of sustainable approaches whereby the filters are prepared and packaged in the country where they will be distributed. For more details go to After the group discussed possible ways of expanding the program, those present got together to celebrate the 73 rd Anniversary of Oakland Rotary Club. A special cake was prepared. Oakland Rotarians gathered around the cake, blew out the candles and all enjoyed sharing in the celebration. 4

5 SUBJECT: U.S. Rotary Club and District Liability Insurance Program (Program) Insurance Update to Rotary Clubs Required Renewal Notification: This message (being sent to current Presidents, Incoming Presidents, Treasurers, Secretaries, District Governors, District Governors Elect and District Insurance Representatives in the U.S. or its possessions and territories) is to inform you that the current liability policies will expire 1 July :01 a.m. We want to advise you that the renewal policy terms and conditions may reduce coverage or be more restrictive than the expiring policy based on the underwriting information provided to insurers. New insurance policies will be purchased to provide continuous coverage and we will make every effort to provide the same broad coverage as per the expiring policy. So that you are able to include the insurance charge for your club in your budgeting process, we will provide renewal premium/rate information to you in June. New: We have posted a PowerPoint on the Lockton portal for U.S. Rotarians (see below for access information) that describes who is covered, the insurance coverages provided and also tells you what is not provided under the Program. A claim scenario is included for a typical bodily injury slip and fall injury. Reminders: As you are planning your fundraising events, please review the insurance documents posted on the Portal, specifically, the policy exclusions. Fireworks: There is very limited coverage as relates to fireworks. Fireworks are considered a high risk activity by insurance underwriters; the Program s coverage is limited to liability arising out of selling pre-wrapped fireworks purchased from a licensed third party or a fireworks display that is part of an event where a third party (not the Named Insured i.e. your local Rotary club) has contracted with a pyrotechnic company. If the Rotary Club is a sponsor of an event where there are fireworks, the pyrotechnics company should include the Rotary Club as an Additional Insured on their policy (in addition to the party contracting with the pyrotechnics company). Club sponsored events with attendance of 25,000: If your club is organizing an event that draws 25,000 or more attendees, your club is required to purchase a primary special events liability policy. Include liquor liability if liquor is being served at the event. When your club is a vendor at the State Fair, this requirement does not apply but it does apply if your club organizes, sponsors or is putting on the large event. THE ABOVE INCLUDES SELECTED EXCERPTS, but see critical information site: 5

6 HOMELESS CHILDREN'S EDUCATION FUND EVENT By Robin Zoufalik, President, Rotary Club of Pittsburgh On 25 March 2017, Pittsburgh Rotary provided a fun volunteer service to Homeless Children's Education Fund for the Walk On By Art Show, to bring awareness to local homeless via art. We helped passersby, who joined us, to make origami houses, which fostered learning to read the instructions as well as a fun activity to make the paper houses, and to create a discussion forum on how homelessness affects children, all at the same time. We were able to participate with a student from Pitt, Rachel, and of course under guidance from Susy Robison, the Director of Outreach and Volunteer Services for the Homeless Children's Education Fund. We all made the houses, helped others, provided interaction within the gallery and in recruiting folks walking by. The activity is part of the Rotary Club of Pittsburgh's District 7300 Grant Project. 6

9 Rotary District 7300 s Polio Eradication Legacy by Vince Costa On January 18, Dr. Peter Salk, son of Dr. Jonas Salk gave a lecture to the students of the Graduate School of Public Health on the University of Pittsburgh campus. He anticipates that polio will be eradicated in the next several years. Dr. Jonas Salk s contribution is well known, but there was a Rotarian in Pittsburgh who was part of the movement for the eradication of epidemics in the 1950 s. Before Rotary International entered the Polio eradication arena, District 7300 (730 in 1980) was intricately involved with mass eradication of epidemics including polio. Dr. Robert Hingson, MD, a trained anesthesiologist and Rotarian, had invented the peace gun in At that time he was splitting his time working between the University Hospitals of Cleveland and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. The peace gun provided an opportunity for mass inoculations by eliminating the need for syringes and highly trained staff. The gun was able to increase the inoculation rate up to 1000 shots per hour. Epidemics that had plagued humankind could now be eradicated through national mass inoculations. For thousands of years, diseases such as small pox, polio, measles, diphtheria, cholera, and typhoid plagued children and young adults. Dr. Hingson was a pioneer in the eradication of epidemics and worked with international organizations such as the World Health Organization ("WHO") to promote mass inoculations for children. His peace gun was instrumental in contributing to the eradication of small pox. WHO was not able to undertake the costs of supporting mass inoculation programs during the 1950 s and 60 s, so in 1958 Dr. Hingson established the Brother s Brother Foundation to raise funds and to administer mass inoculation programs outside of North America. The Board of Directors included three Rotarians from the Pittsburgh area. Dr. Hingson was a member of the Oakland Rotary Club in the 1960 s and served as President in During the 1960 s and 1970 s District 730 (7300) Rotarians linking with Rotarian clubs around the world supported mass inoculation programs. The very first program was in Guatemala in The Pittsburgh Rotary clubs raised $25,000 to support a government program in Guatemala City. The then Vice President was also the Rotary District Governor for Central America and his granddaughter was the first recipient of the vaccine. 11 CONTINUING THE LEGACY! By Bob Dove When Tom Nunnally of the Rotary Club of Forest Hills passed away last September, Urukundo Village lost a major angel. Tom was instrumental in bringing clean water to the village and surrounding countryside via a solar powered pumping station financed through an RI Grant. He also paid for the installation of solar panels for two buildings that house orphans on the property, two buildings for the primary school, and a sewing center. The Rotary Club of Forest Hills is continuing Tom's legacy by purchasing two sewing machines each year to be awarded to the top student of each of the two graduating classes from the sewing center. But more is needed. Urukundo Village is an independent home for Rwandan children created and funded through Hope Made Real and its donors. They are not funded by any denomination or organization and welcome all who seek to help the children of Rwanda. It is a 10-year old project of Arlene Brown ( Mama Arlene ) from Williamsport, PA, and is home to fifty-two children. It has a working farm and a primary school for 550 children. Hope Made Real, the foundation based in Pennsylvania that supports Urukundo Village, is trying to raise $24,000 to purchase additional property on which to build housing. This project cannot be supported through Rotary Grants since it is for property and buildings. Mama Arlene herself writes: Solar panels are also supplying electricity for the Chicken farm thanks to Tom. Everything Tom did he did in the name of Rotary--he took no credit for himself. The Rotary emblem is on the water pumping station & nine separate water tanks for harvesting rain water, Dental Clinic Solar system, sewing center, chicken project, and two classrooms at the preschool for equipment supplied. I am sure I missed something but it is important that the you know Dental Chairs were paid for by Rotary clubs in the Pittsburgh area. Lots of love, [Mama Arlene] If you would like to help continue Tom s legacy with a contribution to Urukundo Village, or if your club would like to help with an international project, please consider contributing online at (indicate that the contribution is for property/building project) or make a check out to Hope Made Real with property building project in the notes line. Checks may be sent to: Hope Made Real, PO Box 3222, Williamsport, PA All donations are tax deductible. [Bob Dove is a bit humble, otherwise he would have mentioned in this article that he will soon be relocating his and his wife's permanent residence to Urukundo Village for an extended period measured in years, not months to devote himself to this worthwhile project Ed.] 11

12 Looking Ahead to the Next Rotary Year Starting July 1 Under RIPE Ian Riseley by PDG Walt Sickles Those who attended the March Tri-State Quad PETS in Altoona were fortunate to hear a presentation, via Skype, by incoming Rotary International President Elect (RIPE), Ian Riseley. Ian was planning to be with us in person on Saturday evening, but the weather and airplane gods had different ideas. In his presentation, Ian asked us all, as Rotarians Making a Difference, to do three new things during the Rotary year. We are first asked to keep track of the number of volunteer hours that your club members and friends on your club's behalf, spend doing good in the world, both at home and away, during the year. That number should include the amount of time spent in planning and preparation. Second we are asked to keep track of the amount of monetary donations and contributions that your club makes to our beneficiaries during the year. Keeping track of this data will be a little work on each club s part, but when we and the rest of the world see the worldwide totals at the end of the year, a lot of eyes will be opened wide and our service to humanity should be much better understood. The reporting of this data will be done on the RI Website with instructions on how to do so to be forthcoming. The third new request from RIPE Ian is that every club plant a new tree somewhere in and around their community for each member in their club. That, of course, will mean that over 1.2 million new trees will be planted throughout the world next year making our planet much prettier and greener. Make your plans now to get on this bandwagon so that the end results of the Rotary year will definitely prove that Rotary does Make A Difference. 12
