5 04 - RACE HISTORY The Hong Kong Derby was first staged in 1873, 11 years before the formation of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, and, with the exception of the war years, has been an annual social and sporting highlight ever since. The race is the most prestigious local event in Hong Kong racing and nowadays offers once-in-alifetime glory to each winner. Since 1981, the Hong Kong Derby has been exclusive to four-year-old horses and is the race that often determines that generation s outstanding champion. The race was established, as with all Derbies around the world, in the tradition of the original Derby, first staged at Epsom, England in The Hong Kong Derby is today the second most lucrative of all the world s Derbys and this year s (2017) 140th edition offers total prize money of HK$18 million, compared to a purse of HK$30,000 when Hong Kong racing turned professional in 1971/72. Initially run at 2400m, the distance of the Hong Kong Derby has varied down the years, but was at 1800m from 1977 until it was increased to its current 2000m in BMW has partnered with the race since The 1980s and 1990s saw several Derby heroes crowned Hong Kong s Horse of the Year - Football (1982), Co-Tack (1983), Yuno When (1986), River Verdon (1991), Makarpura Star (1995) - and in the current decade the brilliant Ambitious Dragon (2011) and Designs On Rome (2014) have taken Hong Kong s top accolade at the end of their Derby-winning campaigns winner Werther joined this illustrious group as he was named Horse of the Year last season, having added the G1 AP QEII Cup at his start after the Derby. In tandem with Hong Kong racing as a whole, the overall quality of Hong Kong s four-year-olds has improved since the turn of the century. The 2005 Derby winner, Vengeance Of Rain, went on to become the first Hong Kong Derby winner to win an overseas Group 1 when he collected the 2007 edition of the Dubai Sheema Classic. Viva Pataca, the 2006 Derby hero, twice won the G1 AP QEII Cup (2007 & 2010) and was runner-up in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic (2008). More recently, the 2013 victor Akeed Mofeed followed up with an international triumph in that year s G1 LONGINES Hong Kong Cup, and the 2014 winner, Designs On Rome, added the G1 AP QEII Cup and the G1 LONGINES Hong Kong Cup to his big-race haul. Able Friend, second in 2014, went on to achieve the highest ever rating by a Hong Kong horse (127) when co-third in that year s World s Best Racehorse Rankings. Two fillies have won the Hong Kong Derby in the professional era, Corvette in 1976 and Elegant Fashion in

8 07 - LAST YEAR S RACE The BMW Hong Kong Derby is always the race that owners strive to win above all others, and 2016 saw a potent mix of high-profile imports and prominent locally-developed gallopers seeking Derby glory. Trainer John Moore led the way, sending out four imports two from the southern hemisphere, two from the northern hemisphere. John Size-trained Sun Jewellery was out to try and become the first horse to complete a clean sweep of the Four-Year-Old Classic Series, having won both the Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m) and Hong Kong Classic Cup (1800m), while G1 Irish Derby placegetter Giovanni Canaletto also had his fair share of admirers. However, it was New Zealand import Werther who was sent off as 3.3 favourite on the back of a first-up win over 1600m on LONGINES Hong Kong International Races day before finishing second in both the Hong Kong Classic Mile and Hong Kong Classic Cup. As the son of Tavistock loomed up at the 300m, he looked likely to race clear for an easy win, but through along the inside came a familiar foe stablemate Victory Magic, ridden by Zac Purton. The two Moore four-year-olds broke clear of the chasing pack to fight tooth and nail for Derby glory, but in the end, it was the punter s elect Werther who prevailed by a head. This represented a new high in Hong Kong for Sydney-based rider Bowman and he admitted that it had not been the easiest of rides: I was a bit worried in the early stages I let him stride out of the barriers and then he wanted to get on with it. I just had a little bit of a wrestle but once he settled into a rhythm, from about the mile, we were in business then and it was just a case of waiting until I got a bit of room and the horse certainly didn t let me down. For Moore, it represented a fifth Derby score, equalling the record held by handler Brian Kan, and he took the quinella to boot: It s just amazing. We ve pulled off the big one and we ve pulled it off in a big way. I thought this was going to be a really close Derby, I didn t expect the margin to be what it was between second and third. I reckoned there d be a length between four or five of them. But the result in the end was conclusive.
