5 018 / 019 Racing Media Guide STEWARDS CUP RACE HISTORY Seasons Bloom is the latest in a distinguished line-up of crack milers to have won the Stewards Cup. Last year s race was the fourth Stewards Cup to have been staged at international Group 1 level, having been designated HKG1 since 1991 when the Pattern race system was introduced to Hong Kong. The race itself dates back to 1954 when, on May, the first running of the Stewards Cup took place at Happy Valley Racecourse. That inaugural race was staged over 100m and the distance stayed relatively consistent at around six furlongs until 197 when Jungfrau won the first edition at around a mile 1650m, to be precise. The distance was upped to 1800m the following year and, after four subsequent renewals at 15m, the race was extended to 1400m upon its relocation to Sha Tin in It remained as a 1400m contest until 1991, with the exception of the 198 race, which took place on Sha Tin s sand track over 1650m. The 1991 race saw the Stewards Cup gain a new identity as an elite mile contest. The Jockey Club moved it from a March slot to November and established it as the first leg of the newly-created Hong Kong Triple Crown. That year s race went to the Patrick Biancone-trained Mastermind, ridden by Gerald Mosse. Two years later the David Hill-trained River Verdon took the spoils under Basil Marcus before adding the Hong Kong Gold Cup and the Champions & Chater Cup to become Hong Kong s only Triple Crown winner. Since the turn of the century, the Stewards Cup has emerged as a world-class contest. Its roll-call of winners features superstars such as Able Friend, Good Ba Ba, Ambitious Dragon, Bullish Luck, Fairy King Prawn and Electronic Unicorn. John Size is the most successful trainer in the race s history with five wins, while the contest s most successful jockey is Basil Marcus, also with five, one of which was achieved before the race was raised to its elite status. 5

7 018 / 019 Racing Media Guide STEWARDS CUP LAST YEAR S RACE Seasons Bloom s fortunes turned around when trainer Danny Shum enlisted the services of Joao Moreira. The Brazilian jockey gained his fourth win from six rides on the former Australian galloper when the gelding claimed the best win of his career in the 018 G1 Stewards Cup. Moreira settled his mount midfield on the rail in the Stewards Cup, angled out into clear ground turning for home, and whistled past the post at the end of a final 400m clocked at.08s. Seasons Bloom indeed finished strongly to beat Fifty Fifty by a half-length with Werther close up in third. The race was most notable for three horses who were unplaced - Southern Legend (4th), Beauty Generation (7th) and Time Warp (10th). Beauty Generation went on to win six of his next seven starts, earned himself the Hong Kong Horse of the Year accolade, and ended 018 with a stunning second success in the G1 LONGINES Hong Kong Mile. Time Warp was to win the Citi Hong Kong Gold Cup next start, in then record time, while Southern Legend later won the SIN G1 Kranji Mile in Singapore. This Stewards Cup success with Seasons Bloom gave Danny Shum his first Group 1 since Little Bridge at Royal Ascot in 01. It s a relief!, Shum said post-race, He loves to race fresh, this horse. He was a little bit disappointing on international day, even though he ran a good race. 12 018 / 019 Racing Media Guide CENTENARY SPRINT CUP RACE HISTORY The Centenary Sprint Cup is the newest of 1 Group 1 events in Hong Kong, although the race dates back to November 1984 when it was first run as the Centenary Cup. It was inaugurated to celebrate the centenary of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, which was founded in Switched between Sha Tin and Happy Valley for the first seven runnings, it was established as a HKG in March over the Sha Tin 100m when the pattern system was introduced in Hong Kong in the 1991/9 season. In 1994, the race was changed from a handicap to set weights and the distance was reduced to 1000m, where it would remain until 016. In 001, the race now renamed the Centenary Sprint Cup was upgraded to HKG1 status, with prize money increased to HK$4.5 million. The race that year went to Tony Cruz-trained King Of Danes, the only three-year-old to win since the contest gained Group status. In 006, it was programmed as the first leg of the Hong Kong Speed Series, which also features the Queen s Silver Jubilee Cup (1400m) and Chairman s Sprint Prize (100m). It was run as an international Group for the first time in 017, before receiving top billing in 018, when prize money increased to HK$10 million. The great Silent Witness features prominently among the race s honour roll, with other dual winners including Best Of The Best, Scintillation, Sacred Kingdom, Eagle Regiment and Peniaphobia. Also successful were Hong Kong Sprint winners Absolute Champion and Aerovelocity, as well as last year s winner D B Pin. Tony Cruz is the race s most successful trainer, winning five times to complement his two victories as a jockey. The most successful rider is Felix Coetzee with four wins. 1

14 018 / 019 Racing Media Guide CENTENARY SPRINT CUP LAST YEAR S RACE The John Size trained D B Pin produced one of the best performances of the season to win the 018 G1 Centenary Sprint Cup under Olivier Doleuze. He won despite beginning moderately and sitting three wide, without cover, for much of the race. D B Pin led a Size trained trifecta in the race with the gelding beating stablemates Mr Stunning and Beat The Clock, who dead-heated for second. The same three horses would then, remarkably, close 018 by finishing first, second and third in the G1 LONGINES Hong Kong Sprint with Mr Stunning (then trained by Frankie Lor) beating D B Pin and Beat The Clock. He s so consistent, Size said after D B Pin s Centenary Sprint Cup win. He s honest and he s diligent, he likes to do his job. He s made incremental improvement every time he s gone to the races, but particularly this season. He s a naturally fast horse, but this season he s learnt to settle under Olivier s guidance, he s certainly come on and puts most of his energy into the last 400m, which is winning races for him. It was a momentous result and one of many for ten-time champion trainer Size. Doleuze took the winning ride to record his first international Group 1 success since Hong Kong s Rich Tapestry won the 014 G1 Santa Anita Sprint Championship. It would be the final G1 win in Hong Kong for the French rider before his contract ended at the close of the season. It means a lot to me, if you had told me I would win a Group 1 this year when it is so hard to stay on a horse in a Class 5, I wouldn t have believed you! said Doleuze.
