Background: Family started W H Smith newsagents and owned village of Hambleden in Buckinghamshire before its sale in Former restaurateur and film producer, who inherited title as fifth Viscount Hambleden on father s death in August, Divorced with two children and now lives with Anni-Frid Reuss, better known as Frida Lyngstad from Abba. Hugh Scott-Barrett - Born: September, Background: based in Wiltshire. CEO of Capital & Regional PLC since Non-executive director of Goodwood Estate Company and GAM Holding AG, a Swiss asset managing company. Previously member of ABN AMRO s managing board. Educated in Paris and at Oxford University. Has been involved in various racing partnerships. With wife Karen, he is a keen supporter of carriage driving and has competed with world champion Boyd Exell. Lord Margardale - Born: April 4, 1958 as Alastair Morrison. Background: Brother of trainer Hughie Morrison. Inherited title as third Baron Margardale in 2003 and lives at the 9,000-acre Fonthill Estate in Wiltshire as well as owning some 73,000 acres on the island of Islay. Continues the family s Fonthill Stud, breeder of Dunaden s sire Nicobar. No previous Investec Oaks winners Hughie Morrison (East Ilsley, Berkshire) Born: November 7, Background: Father Lord Margardale was longstanding MP for Devizes and owned Fonthill Estate. He bred the Oaks-winning half-sisters Juliette Marny and Scintillate as well as 1978 St Leger winner Julio Mariner. Eton-educated Hughie Morrison, who rode five point-to-point winners and served as a steward at Newbury, initially forged a career outside racing. After graduating with a degree in business studies, he worked for a healthcare group as well as pharmaceutical and lighting companies as an unusual grounding for a career in racing. Anyone who has run a lighting business in Manchester in the depths of recession can cope with stress, he said. Lure of horses saw him spend two years as assistant to Paul Cole before buying Summerdown Stables at East Ilsley in Berkshire in September, 1996, and began training following spring. Sariska was the last filly to complete the Musidora Stakes-Investec Oaks double in *Raced once at two, finishing powerfully to land a mile maiden at Goodwood by a length and three-quarters in August. *Sire, Azamour, won four Group Ones including St James s Palace Stakes over a mile and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes over a mile and a half. Starts: 2; Wins: 2; 2nd: -; 3rd: -; Win & Place Prize Money: 45,767 Ballymacoll Stud Background: Ballymacoll Stud represents a continuation of the bloodstock and racing interests of the late Lord Weinstock and late Sir Michael Sobell through their respective families. Lord Arnold Weinstock, the youngest of six children of Polish-Jewish parents who came to London in 1904, was born on July 29, 1924, and orphaned at the age of 10. He died on July 23, 2002, and his family has continued the racing interests which include Ballymacoll Stud in Co Meath, Ireland, managed by Peter Reynolds. Lord Weinstock was one of the great post-war captains of industry, serving as managing director of the General Electric Company from 1963 to 1996, at one stage employing a workforce of 230,000. Weinstock was knighted by Harold Wilson in 1970 for services to exports and created a life peer 10 years later by Margaret Thatcher. His widow Netta is the daughter of Sobell, with whom Weinstock owned horses from Sobell and Weinstock bought Dorothy Paget's bloodstock interests for 250,000 in 1960 including the 300-acre Ballymacoll Stud. Sir Michael passed away in 1993, while Lord Weinstock s death came four days before Golan s emotional victory in the 2002 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Lord Weinstock s son Simon, who died aged 44 in May, 1996, became a partner in Ballymacoll in His widow Laura continues the involvement. The stud has been responsible for 28 individual Group One winners, most of whom carried the famous pale blue, yellow and white silks, headed by dual Derby hero Troy, six-time Group One winner Pilsudski, dual Breeders Cup Turf victor Conduit, and Derby hero North Light. Took out a public licence to train in 1972, recording his first success that year when Sandal won at Newmarket on April 28. Trains at Freemason Lodge in Newmarket. 4 MADAME DEFARGE (GB) FACTFILE Breeding: b f Motivator - Friendlier (Zafonic (USA)) Breeder: Middle Park Stud Ltd Born: March 11, 2010 Owner: Bill Gredley Trainer: Michael Bell Jockey: Tom Queally Form: 1-3 *Kept on after meeting traffic to take third behind Talent in the 10-furlong Listed Pretty Polly Stakes at Newmarket on May 5. *Successful on her only other start, posting a half-length success in a mile maiden on heavy ground at Yarmouth in October. *Could bid to give owner/breeder Bill Gredley a second Investec Oaks success, 21 years after the victory of User Friendly. Madame Defarge s dam is a half-sister to the four-time Group One winner. Race Record: Starts: 2; Wins: 1; 2nd: 0; 3rd: 1; Win & Place Prize Money: 7,455 Bill Gredley Born: March, Background: Founder chairman of Unex Group of companies, which are involved in property development and have their headquarters at Stetchworth, near Newmarket. His son Tim, a former showjumper who has represented Great Britain, is managing director of the Unex Group, while his daughter Pollyanna is also heavily involved in the business. The 2013 Sunday Times Rich List estimated the family s worth at 125 million. Racing Interests: Became involved in racing in 1977, when he sent a couple of horses to Bill Marshall and Clive Brittain - his first winner, Purple Mark (trained by Brittain) came at Wolverhampton on April 10, He purchased Stetchworth Park Stud from breeder Douglas Gray in 1982 and still keeps a band of broodmares at the property. The best horse to be bred and owned by Gredley was User Friendly, also trained by Brittain, who won four Group One races - the Investec Oaks, the St Leger, the Irish Oaks and the Yorkshire Oaks. He openly admits to running his racing interests as a business and called for an owners strike in 1992 to make the government aware of racing s low levels of prize money and the amount that VAT and other taxes extracted from those involved. In 2005, he paid 280,000 for the cast iron entrance gates to the winner s enclosure at Ascot. After school, he prepared yearlings at the Haras d Etreham in Normandy and then spent three years in the Life Guards, during which time he rode as an amateur - winning five races, including aboard Ten Cherries at Sandown s Grand Military meeting. Spent two and a half years as assistant trainer to Mercy Rimell and three years in the same role with Paul Cole. In 1988 Pass The Peace - carrying the colours of Brian Bell, Michael s father - won the Group One Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket. Apprenticed to trainer Pat Flynn at 15, although the apprenticeship was terminated when Queally s parents insisted he finish his leaving certificate at school.
