Fresh off graduating from a course on stud management sponsored by the Grayson Foundation in the late 1960s, Landry and some partners purchased a farm near Leesburg, Va. With some help from Carolyn and Sam Rogers, he put together his first consignment at Fasig-Tipton in Timonium, Md., in I got some notoriety the first sale I went to, Landry said. I had a Delta Judge filly that came into the ring and normally (auctioneer) John Finney would have read the pedigree and talked about the horse, but he was on the phone. Whoever was in the auction stand just kind of mentioned the horse and who KEANE STUD BY EVAN HAMMONDS she was and went on trying to sell her. She wasn t selling very well. I jumped up out of my seat and yelled, If that guy would get off the phone and tell the people about my filly, she d bring what she should be bringing. She wound up bringing about three times what she was about to be hammered down for. I guess a lot of people had sort of wished they could say something like that to Mr. Finney. I didn t know who he was or what the deal was, so my naiveté paid off and I gained a fair amount of notoriety with people saying, Are you the guy who told John Finney to get off the phone? Growing up just outside Baton Rouge, Landry had an uncle who would talk Landry s mother into letting him take the youngster to Fair Grounds in New Orleans. Noting it was fun, Landry didn t train any horses of note other than one that you couldn t train on the track. You just had to turn him out in a field and he would circle the field as many times as he thought necessary and then he would let you catch him and put him back in his stall. He was a self-trained horse. He had a habit of stopping right on the finish line. We never knew whether he won or was passed by everybody. From Pennsylvania the Landrys moved to Maryland to a farm near Chesapeake City named St. Augustine Farm and were part of the group that purchased the 1,000-acre Windfields Farm, which was later divided into several farms including today s Northview Stallion Station. After operating a farm in New Jersey for a while, the Landrys moved to a farm near Charlton, N.Y., and had a home in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. We used to just be summer people up here while we had the other locations, Landry said. We had a house in Saratoga Springs right on Union Avenue. At one time we had the closest privately owned home to the front of the track, but then about years ago we decided to buy a house on the river. It was going to be a weekend house, but it had been abandoned for 20 years so it turned into a money pit. It was a matter of selling the house in town so we could finish this one to make it livable. It s a lovely house, and it has the best view of the Hudson River. Landry has also had a great view of the Thoroughbred business for the last 40- plus years. As a bloodstock agent, he notes his highest point came early on when he sold the mare to his future wife. Financially he s done well, selling some horses privately that were considered homeruns. 108 / BloodHorse.com / NOVEMBER 8, / TheBloodHorse / BloodHorse

I bought a mare in Arkansas, with a foal by her side, for $10,000 and between her and the filly, I got about a quarter of a million for that pair. Hilmer Schmidt bought the mare. There have been some others that were pretty good deals. I ve got some stakes horses going right now that I sold. I m sure the people that have bought them have thought they ve hit a home run. For Snow Lantern Thoroughbreds, a pair of longtime clients Robert Powell and Dr. Joseph Orlick from Virginia, Landry sold Avanzare (Grand Reward Turn the Tide, by Theatrical) for $1,100 at the 2011 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic yearling sale. The 4-year-old gelding won the Washington Park Handicap (gr. III) Aug. 30 and was third in the City of Hope Mile Stakes (gr. IIT) Oct. 4 at Santa Anita Park. Snow Lantern s Long On Value was a $3,000 sale at the 2012 Midlantic sale. The son of Value Plus Long Message, by Orientate, has won four stakes for Wachtel Stable and George Kerr, getting up late Oct. 31 to win the Twilight Derby (gr. IIT) on the Friday Breeders Cup program. I was cheering him on, said Landry, who watched the race on TV. Robert didn t have the channel, so I was calling Twilight Derby winner Long On Value was bred by clients of Landry the race to him over the phone. He really enjoyed it. I have a great respect for him and his knowledge of horses, said Powell of Landry, who has been a client since the late 1960s. I m in another business but I ve always enjoyed the horse business as an advocation as much as a vocation, and he has acted as my agent on every horse I ve ever bought or sold. Through all of those years except for a few rare years when I had another farm down in Georgia we ve been in partnership up until this last year when Louise died. Powell notes the success they ve had with Turn the Tide and Long Message, the dams of Avanzare and Long On Value, respectively, horses they teamed up on early. Turn the Tide was a $5,000 purchase for Powell at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic winter mixed sale in Though she was unraced, her second foal was Avanzare who races for bloodstock agent Donato Lanni and John F. Youngblood. Lanni has since purchased the Turn the Tide who is in foal for 2015 to The Factor. Long Message was bred in New York by Landry and Rhapsody Farm, and Long On Value is her third foal. She has been bred to Mill Ridge Farm stallion Keep Up for Long Message is on Powell s farm in Virginia and when his mares are in Kentucky to be bred they reside at Millennium Farm. Landry had a 36-horse consignment at the Oct. 6-7 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga mixed sale, and he was among the leading consignors by gross. While active, Landry contemplates slowing down following the death of his wife this past spring, perhaps wintering in the Ocala, Fla., area, but don t expect him to exit the business the way he came in anytime soon. People ask me when am I going to retire, he said. I say, People work all of their life so they can retire and do what they want to do. And I ve been doing it my whole life. So what am I going to do? Go retire and do something I don t want to do? B SKIP DICKSTEIN 110 / BloodHorse.com / NOVEMBER 8, / TheBloodHorse / BloodHorse
