4 What does my Class Score Mean? To better understand the rating bands here is the data on how each band appears in the entire population of tested horses in the database with known racing outcomes. This database includes horses from major yearling sales throughout North America, Europe, Australasia and Japan as well as homebred yearlings in those countries. Rating % of Population Stake Winners A+ 3.20% 1 in every 5.2 A 6.85% 1 in every 8.1 B 7.21% 1 in every 10.5 C 12.15% 1 in every 32.5 D 70.59% 1 in every Keep in mind that at major yearling and two year old sales there will be approximately 3.5% Stakes winners to horses offered, or 1 for every 28 offered for sale. Please keep in mind two important factors depending on the test there is an error rate and trainer effect. These will have a large impact on the variance between predicted and observed outcomes. What does my Distance Rating Mean? The distance range of the horse is generated by looking at both DNA, cardiovascular and weight variables to obtain the prediction of optimal distance for the horse. While the DNA alone can give us information as to how far a horse wants to run, via variations found that are associated with muscle fiber type composition, the size of the horse and also the cardiovascular parameters of the horse do play an important role in defining the optimal distance of a horse. Horses of high class are often able to run at distances outside of this optimal distance range, especially as two and three year olds. Cardiovascular Type This is a description of the cardiovascular measurements of the horse as it relates to the type of cardiovascular system that it is. The algorithm that is used to create this cardiovascular type is a K-Means clustering algorithm that uses iterative techniques in an unsupervised fashion to group cardiovascular measurements in our dataset into clusters that contain similar characteristics. There are 9 clusters, or groups, to which we assign a label to based on what the horses in that group predominately are: Cluster % of Population Label/Type % 3YO Miler % Late Maturer/Miler % 3YO Miler/Classic % 3YO Bullseye Sprint % 3YO Dirt Miler % 3YO Bullseye Miler % 3YO Classic/Long % 3YO Turf Bullseye % 2YO Bullseye Turf Sprint 3YO Miler A relatively common cardio type. Generally horses with this type of cardio are best at three over a mile. This cardio type can lack class if there is no speed in the genotype. Late Maturer/Miler a rare cardio type and generally horses with type of cardio are late maturing horses that are best over a mile or more. This type of cardio can lack class. 3YO Miler/Classic generally horses with type of cardio are horses that excel at a mile or more. This type of cardio can be high class if combined with good biomechanics and genotype. 3YO Bullseye Sprinter this is a somewhat common cardio, but it is a really effective one if it is combined with horses of the right genotype (sprinters). Horses such as Moanin, Groupie Doll, Heatherly and Callback share this cardio type. It does cause a mismatch if found in staying genotypes that usually compromises class. 3YO Dirt Miler this is a very common cardio type in North American racing. Horses such as Stopchargingmaria, Take Charge Indy and Carpe Diem have this cardio type. You can see the odd high class turf sprinter have this type of cardio as well as it sustains pressure. 3YO Bullseye Miler a very good cardio type for three year olds and older horses over a mile and it is not surface specific. Horses such as Arrogate, Tepin and Seaburge share this cardio type. 3YO Classic/Long a somewhat common cardio type. This cardio type is very hit or miss with high class horses such as Fort Larned, Dortmund, Hardest Core and Boisterous sharing this cardio type but a lot of slow horses also have it. 5 3YO Turf Bullseye a somewhat common cardio type, horses with this cardio tend to be good over a range of distances on the turf. You can get the odd dirt horse with this cardio type but they are usually backmakers. 2YO/3YO Bullseye Turf Sprint a somewhat rare cardio type that is a high class cardio for two year old and three year old turf sprinting. Horses such as Capitalist and Fontiton have this cardio type. You do see the odd distance horse that races on dirt with this cardio type, but most are turf sprinters. Please note: the cardio type is included in the calculation of the overall class score. There are significantly more horses that have good cardio types than there are good horses so please use the cardio type as a guide only. Precocity Index The precocity index is based on the genetic markers and cardiovascular parameters of the horse. In examining over 4000 racehorses with known racing outcomes and comparing their date of birth to the date of their first start and the date of their win with the highest prize money we have developed a precocity index that is based on genetic and cardiovascular parameters to predict this outcome. Projected Average Stride Length The projected average stride length is based on biomechanical properties taken at rest. Using a high speed (500fps) camera we captured maximal and average stride length of 2yo s in training and then after measuring the same horses at rest were able to create a prediction model that predicts average stride length. Horses are assigned a label that best describes the predicted outcome. Relative Weight Index Based on a scientific model of weight prediction (Stanair, et al 2004) we are able to determine the approximate weight of the horse. This weight is then compared to all other horses in our database of the same sex and within 30 days of the date of measurement of the subject horse. The radiographs were examined as recommended under the conditions of sale by the auctioneer. The X-Rays viewed revealed no lesions that in my opinion would be of clinical significance. A physical examination was conducted on the horse when stationary and walking. In my opinion the horse was clinically normal, in good health and excellent condition.
