We are thrilled to have Clive and William on board, both upwardly mobile trainers, and we look forward to them training their first KVT winner next year. We have had a varied 2016, some fantastic results mixed with some disappointments and injury. The first half of the season started with fireworks, both Tullius (Diomed Stakes Group 3) and Magical Memory (Abernant Stakes Group 3 and Duke Of York Stakes Group 2) winning these historical pattern races. Following his debut win, Bohemian Flame also earned black-type on his second start in the National Stakes (Listed). With the season just getting going we had high hopes of reaching our 2015 season record prize money. The second half of the season has proved more challenging. Signal Hill started the year with great expectations, but injury intervened. Fellow three-year-old Match My Fire was also thought of highly but niggling issues have held him back. However Frenchman performed satisfactorily having won and been placed. Of the two-year-olds, Bohemian Flame looks to have a bright future and we are hopeful that Contango and Gorham s Cave along with the well handicapped The Big Short and Percy Thrower will show their metal next year. Dandy Roll has been managed through training issues, but Social Secretary had problems that proved intractable. KVT has had some great extra events this year, beginning with a mid-december visit to see the yearlings followed by a Christmas lunch. The Yearling Parade at The HAC in the City of London was an enormous success and we enjoyed an excellent morning at Epsom for Breakfast with the Stars. Additional visits to trainer s yards and picnics at Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood have kept everybody busy. The 2016 season provided exciting sport with many highlights. The dominance of Champion Trainer Aiden O Brien, nearing Bobby Frankel s world record of 25 group wins in a season, and champion jockey Jim Crowley s UK record of 46 wins in a calendar month being noteworthy. At the yearling sales super sires Galileo, Dubawi and Frankel have carried all before them. Our bloodstock advisor Luke Lillingston has been hard at work at all the major sales in the UK and Ireland. We hope that with these six modestly priced yearlings (four colts and two fillies) he has unearthed a gem or two. 3 The Autocracy Syndicate Pedigree Clive Cox Havana Gold / Tipping Over colt This colt is from the first crop of the exciting young sire Havana Gold, a Prix Jean Prat (Group 1) winner for Richard Hannon and by a son of Galileo (Teofilo) out of the fast Group 3 winner Jessica s Dream. KVT has had some success with first season sires, most notably with Magical Memory, who was from the first crop of Zebedee. His dam, Tipping Over, was a stakes performer despite being on the small side. A winner at two, she went on to achieve black-type in Germany and she was also runner-up in the valuable Tattersalls Ireland Sales Race. Her sire Aussie Rules, a son of Danehill, was a classic winner (French 2,000 Guineas). He will be trained at John Francome s impressive yard and private gallops in Upper Lambourn by Clive Cox. Clive has tasted huge success in 2016 with, amongst others, Royal Ascot winners Profitable and My Dream Boat. Clive s handling of the 2013 Champion Sprinter Lethal Force, who won the July Cup in record time, was exemplary and he is a superb placer of his horses at all levels. Our colt comes from the family of KVT s 2015 star Bishop s Leap and traces back to Nick Robinson s 1,000 Guineas placed mare Shellshock. He is eligible for the Plus10 Bonus as well as the Tattersalls Ireland 300,000 Sales Race. Luke Lillingston purchased this colt at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale and commented: I have a good feeling about freshman sire Havana Gold and personally own two mares in foal to him. This colt is a strong grey both in physique and colour and he carries himself beautifully. Like his mother, I am hopeful he can be a useful two-year-old. 4 The Charles The Great Syndicate Clodovil / Holda colt Andrew Balding This colt is by Clodovil, the French 2,000 Guineas-winning son of Danehill who raced for the Lagardere Family in France. Clodovil has been a consistent and solid stallion at stud and has sired the likes of Falmouth Stakes (Group 1) winner Nahoodh and young sire sons Gregorian and Es Que Love. Clodovil s progeny are often tough horses and he boasts the excellent statistic of being just shy of 60% lifetime winners to runners. The dam, Holda, won aged two and has had a good start at stud with three winners, all being rated 80 or above. One of these is Andrew Balding s jet setting Group 2 winning filly Blond Me, who continues to improve aged four and has won 340,000 in prize money. Holda is a half-sister to a Group 1 winner and is from the family of the champion Conduit. The Havana Gold Colt Our colt will be trained by Andrew Balding whose many successes for KVT, most notably in recent seasons with multiple pattern winner Tullius (now an eight-year-old), need little introduction. He is eligible for the Plus10 bonus. Luke Lillingston purchased this colt at the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale and commented: Arriving at the stables of Magical Memory s breeders I am shown an impressive grey who I quickly realise is a beauty. We had two days of waiting and hoping that the horse with KVT s name on him would actually be ours. When the hammer fell, delight and relief were felt in equal measure! 6 The Drumfire Syndicate Pedigree Will Stand at Park Paddocks, Wall Box W, Box 515 Roger Varian Holy Roman Emperor / Megaspiel Colt Holy Roman Emperor has proved a good sire since taking the place of his infertile stablemate George Washington. His progeny includes 1,000 Guineas winner Homecoming Queen and, of course, Charles The Great, who won the Weatherby s Super Sprint and was Group placed for KVT before being sold to Hong Kong for a considerable sum. She is also a half-sister to the Group 2-winning Three Degrees as well as Mehronissa, who has won a Listed race since the sales catalogue was printed. Roger is at the top of his game and has trained a Group winner by Holy Roman Emperor. Luke Lillingston purchased this colt at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale (Book 2) and commented: He is an especially strong and also tough looking colt. 7 The Firebreak Syndicate William Knight Royal Applause / Air Biscuit filly Royal Applause was a top class sprinter for Barry Hills. Based at the Queen s Sandringham Stud, his influence of sprinters has been notable. His Group 2-winning son Acclamation emerged as a high class stallion from humble origins and has in turn produced outstanding young stallions, Dark Angel and Equiano. The dam, Air Biscuit, a three-time winning daughter of Galileo, is a half-sister to the Prix Du Bois (Group 3) winner. Ziria s progeny include four stakes winners one of which, Athenian, is by Acclamation. Air Biscuit has made a bright start at stud producing two 98-rated horses from three runners to date. These include a full-brother to our filly and a half-brother by Equiano. The Royal Applause line crosses well with this family. The Holy Roman Emperor Colt William Knight will be training our filly and it is a great help that he already has the winning half-brother, Solar Flair, in his yard - a horse that he is confident can achieve black-type in due course. William trains from his breathtaking base on the Angmering Park Estate, thus providing a West Sussex dimension for our partners. He has quickly made a name for himself as a talented young trainer and has enjoyed a successful season in His handling of Illustrious Blue, Goodwood Cup (Group 2) winner, gained many accolades. Luke Lillingston purchased this filly at the Goffs Premier Yearling Sale and commented: This filly has a lot of Galileo in her make-up which must be a good thing. The greatest sire on the planet, he is now becoming an extraordinary broodmare sire as well. His daughters can already claim to be the dams of classic winners Galileo Gold, La Cressionnaire, Night of Thunder and Qualify. This filly is very feminine and exudes class.
