EACHing Ou A new multi-million dollar facility beside Clinton Raceway called the Regional Equine and Agricultural Centre of Huron (REACH) offers equine enthusiasts endless possibilities. By Kathy Rumleski

t Many talented trainers, drivers, breeders and horses have come out of Huron County. Jack Darling, Bob Hamather, Paul Taylor, Tigerama and Au Rumba to name a few that have won awards and big races within the past year and hail from the county known as Ontario s West Coast. Now, with a brand new 66,000 square foot arena complex, which officially opened for business this fall and has a plethora of projects on the go, the county is poised to nurture and support even more blossoming talent. The Regional Equine and Agricultural Centre of Huron (REACH) is a $6.5 million state-of-the-art facility set on 40 acres, which administrators boast is the only one of its kind in Canada. The impetus for the project dates back four years when the county s chief administration officer, Richard Harding, started searching for ideas for the land next to Clinton Raceway that had an elementary school building on site. Harding, also the REACH executive director, had a large vision and worked to bring the necessary decision makers on board. The result is a stunning multi-purpose facility that has endless possibilities in education, entertainment, community outreach and support for the agricultural industry and its partners. I m over the top, Harding said, just a couple of months after the official ribbon cutting ceremony opened the facility in September. It is so limitless that right now at times it s difficult to know in which direction to go. More on the projects and programs will come later in the story, but let s take a look at the new gem. It features: x 108 foot indoor riding arena; - Grandstand seating for more than 500 and handicap access; - Indoor raised and heated viewing room/judges booth; - Sound booth; - Concession stand; - 73 x 133 foot indoor warm-up area attached to the arena;

REACHING OUT - Stabling for 22 horses and two stallions; - Teaching barn, suitable for hands-on studies in farrier science, reproduction and equine massage; - Teaching laboratory for reproduction and other courses; - Two indoor wash stalls; - Heated and secured tack room; - Administration offices; - Six outdoor wash stalls. Its education centre includes a boardroom, three classrooms, meeting room, media studies room with computer connections and an amphitheatre where large animals can be walked into a tiered seating style classroom, plus dorm rooms and a kitchen. It s considered a luxury arena and Harding explains why. It s luxury in the sense it s large glass space with natural lighting, which is good for those attending and participating. You don t have a lot of unnatural light, he said. Some 380 seats are bucket seats which are more comfortable and there s a state-of-the-art sound system. To take a look at the facility and see The beautiful indoor arena at the new REACH facility has seating for 500. what it offers, a comprehensive website has been designed to help navigate viewers around the centre and its programs. Go to to take a tour and see what s coming up. One of the most exciting programs planned for the facility is the performance horse handler certificate offered through the Ridgetown campus of the University of Guelph. The program in scheduled to start in September. We called together an advisory committee from the industry to develop this course, said Melanie Prosser, REACH s director of program services. We worked on developing a very unique curriculum for a one-year certificate. Forty students will receive training in its first year. Prosser said horse racing and equestrian personnel in the region are excited about the program. There s a huge buy-in from the performance horse industries, that s Standardbreds, Thoroughbreds, Quarter Horses, dressage and show jumper and things like that. With registration closing in February, REACH and the college want to get the word out about the program. Ridgetown has been going to all the high schools in Ontario and also trying to reach people who may have left high school a few years ago. Prosser said this program will be very hands on. We are a complete working facility. They will have opportunity to work alongside us. Clinton Raceway will also offer a great training ground for the students. Several of the horses are going to be involved at the racetrack. They ll be learning about exercise physiology and learn- January 2010 The Harness Edge

REACHING OUT ing how to use heart rate monitors. Currently there are 10 horses on site at REACH. The majority have been donated to REACH and we now own them and two are on a lease agreement, Prosser said. REACH has two Thoroughbreds retired from the track, four Standardbreds including the stallion Shipps Speed (sire of millionaire trotter Mc Cooeye), a Percheron, Appaloosa, Paint and a crossbred. We want to make sure future students have the opportunity to work around all different kinds of horses. For those already involved with performance horses, REACH offers reproduction courses for all disciplines and breeds as well as equine massage classes. Prosser said the first reproduction class was hands on and hands in. People learned about preparing their mares nutritionally for the upcoming breeding season through to learning artificial insemination techniques. A lab and an adjoining teaching barn were used. The next equine reproduction course is scheduled for February 20 and 21. There are also equine stretching and equine massage classes planned for March. Prosser said the first massage class was well attended by people in the harness racing industry. Equine Guelph also partnered with REACH to offer seminars called Horses 101 this past fall on health, nutrition, anatomy and equine management. Some of the Horses 101 instructors are anatomist Dr. Jeff Thomason from the Ontario Veterinary College, Dr. Robert Next month the REACH facility will begin a horse handler certificate course offered through the Ridgetown campus of the University of Guelph and will be very hands on for the students attending. Wright from the provincial agriculture ministry and Dr. Katie Crossan from the Kirkton Veterinary Clinic. In November, Dr. Temple Grandin, a world-renowned animal behaviourist from Colorado State University and best-selling author, traveled to Clinton for a two-hour lecture. Close to 200 people from across the province attended. Besides courses and lectures, the local community also has opportunities to use the facilities. Four nights a week, the arena, which can hold about 15 to 20 horses, is open for community ride nights. People bring in their own horses to ride. The Back in the Saddle program is for folks who used to ride, but need some help to polish up their skills. They re allowed to come back and have supervised riding sessions, Prosser said. That one is quite popular. There is also an after-school program three nights a week for children. The program has three components: nutrition and preparing healthy snacks, kickboxing and Tai Chi and learning about horses and riding. January 2010 The Harness Edge

REACHING OUT The Ministry of Health funds the after-school program. REACH staff is also looking at developing a link to a nearby wildlife area that already has existing horse trails and offering therapeutic riding. There are so many groups that are interested... we know we ll support them, but it s just a matter of working our way through each of those various things and starting to watch them be successful, Harding said. While horses are at the forefront of the centre, Prosser said the facility can also be rented out for a variety of other events, such as RV shows. Harding and staff have been creative in figuring out ways to keep the centre in use year round. One interesting proposal is to offer weddings on horseback. Harding has obtained his certification to be a marriage commissioner so that he can perform wedding ceremonies. In my position within the municipality, I had the opportunity to obtain status as a marriage commissioner. It made sense that I get that certification so that as part of my role in the municipality and here, we would have that extra piece to go out and market. He said he has already spoken to travel agencies about creating wedding packages. The intention is to put a full package together where we can have a wedding and reception and a travel package to go to Kentucky for a week or some place else for a honeymoon. With the endless possibilities, Harding said, it s enough to make your head spin some days. It s a pretty big vision when you consider every component of it. Harding said the process of getting to this point took hours of research, brainstorming and talking to local people involved in the agricultural and equine industries. It all started when the municipality decided to look at its community park, which included the racetrack and its buildings, the grandstand, the pool and arena. We were looking at our long-term planning. The (REACH) property bordered on these lands. When it came available from the local school board, I felt we should consider the purchase, he said. Harding wanted the site to be functional for the municipality as well as provide economic development for the community. He also wanted a facility that would bring people to the county, who might not other wise come. Harding was also drawing on the provincial government s plans to focus educational dollars to keep youth in school for trades training. He wanted youth to get top training to be in a strong position to keep their farms running and profitable with the latest research and information. What we re trying to do at REACH is not only offer the traditional knowledge that they would get, but be a little bit at the front edge of that so that you can have a better understanding of the industries and look to the future as to how they can operate their local farms. Prosser called it a motel for education. Melanie Prosser, the Director of Program Services at REACH. We are not aware of any other facility like this in Canada. This is a brand new concept that Richard came up with. We don t know anywhere else that you can have access to the things we have here. Harding said it only made sense that REACH would be agriculturally based. One of the things I found that has been unsuccessful is when you try to do something you re not good at and you try to mimic somebody else. I wanted to do something that would be obviously supportable locally, but where we could draw on local expertise. That expertise is the county s long, long history in agriculture and in the equine industry. One-third of the horse population in the province or 120,000 plus horses is within an hour of Clinton. Ontario has the fourth largest horse population in North America. Clinton Raceway s general manager Ian Fleming said having such a facility as a next-door neighbour is great for the racetrack. It will bring a lot of people to the site. It couldn t get people any closer to the track so it s good for us. We think it will draw a lot of unique events. You get people to the door and they ll be right in our neighbourhood and we hope to be able to capitalize on that. January 2010 The Harness Edge

REACHING OUT Richard Harding, the Executive Director of the REACH facility, was also the mastermind behind its inception and creation. The track donated $750,000 to REACH. We think it s good for the horse industry, for us and the horse people. We think it s going to be a great fit for us, Fleming said. Harding was also keen to ensure the centre was top of the line for agricultural shows. There was an obvious shortage for show facilities, in particularly show facilities that had all of the little pieces right for particularly large horse shows and cattle shows and auctions, Harding said. Many of the facilities that exist may have been missing this or that. I did a lot of research and talking to people about what would make a very good facility. Even people not associated with the industry will profit through economic development, Prosser said. Once the students arrive next September, the economic benefit will increase even more, she said. The potential... is phenomenal on all sorts of levels. The town is certainly buying into this whole concept. Harding said the centre will also create jobs. Direct jobs will eventually amount to about 10 positions, but more employees will be needed to help run events such as summer youth camps and large shows. Organizers will also need parking and security assistance. The spinoff jobs are where the real benefit will be in local restaurants and other service industries. I fully believe that they re going to be significant, said Harding, whose own workload has been substantial. The municipality and REACH, which has an operating budget of about $750,000, now need more attention than Harding can given them as one individual. I ve worked a considerable amount of hours to make sure we made it through construction on budget and on time and keeping the municipal business up to speed and up to date, he said. I m working with council and the REACH board to make sure both get the full attention they deserve. He s enjoying watching REACH expand these days. It s a good feeling, he says, knowing that more hard work is still to come. We had our open house and the first thing I said to (staff) the following day was, The real work now begins. It s been a lot of work getting it to this stage. Now we have to go out and spread the word and bring people here. We know that once we bring people here, they ll be back.
