3 Course Definitions Course Walk-Through: Opportunity to navigate the course on foot prior to competition in order to become comfortable with the pattern. During the OHC led walk-through, each judge will lead through their section. With the use of our overhead maps, course direction is fairly self-explanatory. We encourage all exhibitors to walk the course prior to the Judge led walk through. Please refrain from talking during the walk through as others around you may not be able to hear the judge. We will have at least two people with flags that walk the exact route each exhibitor needs to take. NO questions will be allowed during the walk through. Walk-throughs will be discussed further at the Fall Trail Clinic. Off Course: Taking an obstacle in the wrong direction; negotiating an obstacle from the wrong side; skipping an obstacle directed by judge, negotiating obstacles in the wrong sequence; not following the correct line of travel either in the drawn pattern or at the judges instruction. Off Course will result in a score of zero for that obstacle. Order of Go/Working Order: Randomly determined order in which exhibitors in a division compete on the course. There will be an order of go posted for ALL Silverado classes. You must be ready when you are called. It will not be the Oregon Horse Center's responsibility to find or track you down. If you are not ready when your number is called, you will miss the opportunity to show in that class. There will not be an order of go in the Logan Arena, we will follow the schedule class list. Refusal: Any action taken by the horse to avoid performing an obstacle, part of a combination of obstacles or portion of a trail course. These actions may include, but are not limited to the following: refusing, evading or running past an obstacle, complete loss of the required gait, and any blatant action by the horse that demonstrates an unwillingness to approach, negotiate and/or complete an obstacle. Either, after 3 unsuccessful attempts at an obstacle or 15 sec of an unsuccessful attempt at an obstacle, the judge will instruct the exhibitor to move to the next obstacle and the exhibitor will take a score of zero for that obstacle. Mtn Trail Explorer: Neither horse nor exhibitor have won 1st Place in an OHC Mountain Trail competition in the Silverado Arena prior to this event. Novice Horse: Horse has not won three (3) first places at OHC (Silverado Arena only). Anyone who has a horse, mule or pony and enjoys the beauty, adventure and challenge of traversing a trail course is eligible. Whether you choose the more difficult Silverado Arena course or a few single classes in the Logan Arena, you are in for a treat! There is something for everyone and this is truly a one-of-a-kind competition that has become the Ultimate Trail Competition! What is a Trail Horse? A trail horse is one that can maneuver through a course of obstacles with physical skill, expression and a good mental attitude. It should travel through and between obstacles with inquisitive desire to go forward without compromising its calm, relaxed attitude and way of going. It should approach each obstacle squarely with authority and correct form, with its own style, yet maintaining its willingness to be guided by the competitor with no apparent resistance. What Tack & Attire should I use? We want you to dress like you would for a day on the trail. Remember though that this is a competition and if it comes to a tiebreaker, the cleaner, neater package may be the difference. We do require all riders wear safe supportive footwear (preferably boots with at least a ½ inch heel). You are encouraged to wear a helmet. As for equipment, you compete with the tack you would use on a trail ride. Make sure it is safe and proper. Silver and/or show clothes will never matter in this competition! Also, a word about bits: You will not be disqualified for using 2 hands on a shank bit, however, there may be a penalty. Riding with two hands is permitted if you are using a snaffle, regardless of the age of the horse Where is the Schooling Area? A schooling area will be provided in the Emerald Arena. When will the Trail Patterns be available? Patterns and order of go for each division will be posted at least one half hour before the walk through. How will I be Scored? All horses enter the arena with a score of 0. With each obstacle, the judge will determine a score to that obstacle. Each obstacle will be scored on a scale of A score of zero will be given for a refusal or off course and a score of 10 is perfect. Scores in between represent the degree to which the judge feels the horse and rider negotiate that particular obstacle. At the completion of that division, scores will be totaled and a final score for each exhibitor will be given. Scores for each division will be posted as soon as possible.* New Rule- If a horse refuses an obstacle for more than 15 seconds or refuses the obstacle 3 times the judge will assign a zero (0) and the participant will be asked to move on to the next obstacle.* Who will be Disqualified? Abuse to the animal inside or outside the competition arena and/or evidence that an act of abuse has occurred will result in disqualification. This includes lameness and/or fresh blood in mouth, chin, shoulder, barrel, flank or hip; disrespect or misconduct by exhibitor. What is a Course Walk-Through? Opportunity to navigate the course on foot prior to competition in order to become comfortable with the pattern. During the OHC led walk-through, each judge will lead through their section. With the use of our overhead maps, course direction is fairly self explanatory. We encourage all exhibitors to walk the course prior to the led walk through. Please refrain from talking during the walk through as others around you may not be able to hear the judge. We will have at least two people with flags that walk the exact route each exhibitor needs to take. NO questions will be allowed during the walk through. Walk-throughs will be discussed further at the Fall Trail Clinic.

12 HORSE RIDING AGREEMENT AND LIABILITY RELEASE FORM FOR INDIVIDUALS RIDING HORSES AT THIS STABLE, THIS FORM MUST BE COMPLETED BY AND FOR EACH PARTICIPANT OREGON HORSE CENTER AND RONALD MAJOR DEFOE, hereinafter known as THIS STABLE. Located at Prairie Rd., Eugene, OR (541) PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE SIGNING SERIOUS INJURY MAY RESULT FROM YOUR PARTICIPATION IN THIS ACTIVITY. THIS STABLE DOES NOT GUARANTEE YOUR SAFETY OR THAT OF YOUR HORSE. IT IS HEREBY AGREED TO AS FOLLOWS: THAT A. AGREEMENT OF RIDERS AND AGREEMENT PURPOSE the following listed individual hereinafter known as the RIDER, and the parents or legal guardians thereof if a minor, do hereby voluntarily request and agree to participate in horse riding on THIS STABLES S promises, and that RIDER will ride his/her own horse or one borrowed or leased by RIDER S own arrangement, today and on all future dates: RIDER NAME AGE (IF UNDER 21) ADDRESS CITY STATE ZIP B. AGREEMENT SCOPE AND TERRITORY This agreement shall be legally binding upon me the registered RIDER, and the parents or legal guardians thereof if a minor, my heirs, estate, assigns, including all minor children, and personal representatives; and it shall be interpreted according to the laws of the state and county of THIS STABLE S physical location. Any dispute by the RIDER shall be litigated in and venue shall be the county in which THIS STABLE is physically located. The term HORSE HEREIN SHALL REFER TO ALL EQUINE SPECIES. The term HORSEBACK RIDING or RIDING herein shall refer to riding or otherwise handling of horses, ponies, mules, or donkeys, whether from the ground or mounted. The term RIDER shall herein refer to a person who rides a horse mounted or otherwise handles or comes near a horse from the ground. The terms I, me, my shall herein refer to the above registered rider and the parents or legal guardians thereof if a minor. C. ACTIVITY RISK CLASSIFICATION Horseback riding is classified as RUGGED ADVENTURE RECREATIONAL SPORT ACTIVITY, and that there are numerous obvious and non-obvious inherent risks always present in such activity despite all safety precautions. According to NEISS (National Electronic Injury Surveillance Systems of United States Consumer Products) horse activities rank 64 th among the activities of people relative to injuries that result in a stay in U.S. hospitals. Related injuries can be severe requiring more hospital days and resulting in more lasting residual effects than injuries in other activities. D. NATURE OF RIDING HORSES No horse is a completely safe horse. Horses are 5 to 15 times larger, 20 to 40 times more powerful, and 3 to 4 times faster than a human. If a rider falls from horse to ground it will generally be at a distance of from 3 ½ to 5 ½ feet, and the impact may result in injury to the rider. Horseback riding/horse driving is the only sport where one much smaller, weaker predator animal, the human, tries to control and become one unit of movement with another much larger, stronger prey animal, the horse, with each having a limited understanding of the other. If a horse is frightened or provoked it may divert from its training and act according to its natural survival instincts which may include, but are not limited to stopping short, changing direction or speed at will; shifting its weight from side to side, bucking, rearing, biting, kicking, or running from danger. E. RIDER RESPONSIBILITY Upon mounting a horse and taking up the reins the RIDER is in primary control of the horse. The RIDER S safety largely depends upon his/her ability to carry out simple instructions, and his/her ability to remain balanced aboard the moving animal. The RIDER shall be responsible for his/her own safety. F. CONDITIONS OF NATURE THIS STABLE is not responsible for total or partial acts, occurrences, or elements of nature that can scare a horse, cause it to fall, or react in some other unsafe way. SOME EXAMPLES ARE: Thunder, lightning, rain, wind, wild and domestic animals, insects, reptiles, which may walk, run, fly near, bite and/or sting a horse or person; and irregular footing on out-of-door groomed or wild land which is subject to constant change in condition according to weather, temperature, natural and man-made changes in landscape. G. INSPECTION OF PREMISES RIDER has inspected THIS STABLE S facilities and trails and is satisfied that all premises conditions are reasonably safe for RIDER S intended purpose, usage and presence upon THIS STABLE S premises. H. ACCIDENT/MEDICAL AND PERSONAL LIABILITY INSURANCE Should medical treatment be required, I and/or my own accident/medical insurance company shall pay for all such incurred expenses. My accident/medical insurance company is. Should my actions or that of my horse cause injury or damage of any kind I and/or my own personal liability shall pay for such damages. My personal liability insurance company is. I. PROTECTIVE HEADGEAR WARNING I have been fully warned and advised by THIS STABLE that the rider should purchase and wear protective headgear (riding helmet), and that the wearing of such headgear while mounting, riding, dismounting, and otherwise being around horses, may prevent or reduce severity of some head injuries and even prevent death from happening as the result of a fall or other incurrence. J. LIABILITY RELEASE In consideration of THIS STABLE allowing my participation in this activity, under the terms set forth herein, I, the RIDER, and the parent or guardian thereof if a minor, do agree to hold harmless and release THIS STABLE, it s owners, agents, employees, officers, members, premises, owners, insurers, and affiliated organizations from legal liability due to THIS STABLE S ordinary negligence; I do further agree that except in the event of THIS STABLE S gross and willful negligence, I shall bring no claims, demands, actions and causes of action, and/or litigation, against THIS Stable and IT S ASSOCIATES as stated above in this clause, for any economic and non-economic losses due to bodily injury, death, property damage, sustained by me and/or my minor child or legal ward in relation to the premises and operations of THIS STABLE, to include while riding, handling, or otherwise being near horses owned by or in the care, custody and control of THIS STABLE.
