2 Explanation of Adventure The Spring Mountain Trail Adventure offers two levels of competition on two different courses built in separate arenas at the Oregon Horse Center. Classes in the Silverado and Logan Arenas are run simultaneously, however in the case of a class conflict we will work with entries so that everyone has a chance to participate. The more advanced competition is held in the Silverado Arena and is made up of several Divisions. Entering a division means that you are judged on one run through the Mountain Trail Course each day of the competition (Friday, Saturday & Sunday). That combined score will determine winners of each division. Prizes for Champion and Reserve Champion, along with Ribbons for 3 rd -6 th place will be awarded. In addition cash prizes will be awarded in the Open Jackpot, the Bareback Jackpot and the Timed & Judged Open and In-Hand Jackpots. The route through the Mountain Trail course will be different each day. Course maps will be posted daily at 7:30am. Exhibitors will have the opportunity to walk the course at 7:45 am in the morning with the judges. The competition in the Logan arena is made up of obstacles and elements similar to what is in the Silverado Arena, but on a slightly smaller scale, as well as elements you might find in a Trail Class at a horse show. A variety of classes on this course will be offered each day with circuit awards being awarded after Sunday s performance for the combined score leaders in each class. A High Point and Reserve High Point Trail Horse will be awarded in four divisions: 17 & under Youth, 18-49, 50 & Over and In-Hand. To be eligible a horse/rider combination must enter at least three individual classes in the Logan arena and one class in the Silverado arena. Your best three classes (daily scores) in the Logan and your best one class (cumulative three day score) in the Silverado will be counted for the award. In-Hand classes will only count toward the In-Hand High Point. Join us for our Complimentary dinner Thursday night at 6:00pm in The Feed Room Restaurant. Saturday evening will be our Spring Mountain Trail Adventure Aisle party. Decorate your stalls, set out some appetizers and invite all your Mountain Trail Friends for munchies, drinks & laughs! Great way to meet everyone & socialize! Take part in the North West Mountain Trail High Point Series! The purpose of this trail series is to support the development of great mountain trail equines. By providing a mountain trail high point series, with year end awards, we hope to give owners one more reason to work with and improve their mountain trail mounts. Earn points in the Professional Class, Amateur Class or Novice Rider Class. As an exhibitor all you need to do is enter the class at the approved events and fill out a participant registration prior to your first competition. Year end prizes will be awarded in all three divisions! For more information on this series, go to Adventure Rules, Conduct, & Definitions Who is eligible? Anyone with a horse, mule or pony and enjoys the beauty, adventure and challenge of crossing a trail course is eligible. What is a Trail Equine? A trail equine is one that can maneuver through a course of obstacles with physical skill, expression and a good mental attitude. It should travel through and between obstacles with inquisitive desire to go forward without compromising its calm, relaxed attitude and way of going. It should approach each obstacle squarely with authority and correct form, with its own style, yet maintaining its willingness to be guided by the competitor with no apparent resistance. What Tack & Attire should I use? We want you to dress like you would for a day on the trail. However, this is a competition and if it comes to a tiebreaker, the cleaner, neater package may be the difference. We do require all riders wear safe supportive footwear (preferably boots with at least a ½ inch heel). You are encouraged to wear a helmet. As for equipment, you compete with the tack you would use on a trail ride. Make sure it is safe and proper. Silver and/or show clothes will NEVER matter in this competition! Also, a word about bits: You WILL NOT be disqualified for using two hands on a shank bit, however, it may result in a lower score. Riding with two hands is permitted if you are using a snaffle or a bit that is typically used two handed for your breed, regardless of the age of the horse. When will the Trail Patterns and order-of-go be available? Patterns will be posted at 7:30am each morning. The order of go for each division will be posted at least one hour before the start of the class. What is a Course Walk-Through? All entered exhibitors will be allowed to walk and inspect the Silverado course with the judges at 7:45am. Please walk the course prior to the judge led walk through so that you are familiar with the course and any questions you may have. The Logan course walk through will take place 15 minutes following the Silverado walk through with the show beginning 15 minutes following the conclusion of the Logan walk through. How will I be Scored? All horses enter the arena with a score of 0. With each obstacle, the judge will instruct a scribe to assign a score to that obstacle. At the completion of that division, scores will be totaled and a final score for each exhibitor will be given. Scores for each division will be posted as soon as possible. Each obstacle will be scored on a scale of A score of zero will be given for a refusal and a score of 10 is perfect. Scores in between represent the degree to which the judge feels the horse and rider negotiate that particular obstacle. Who will be Disqualified? Abuse to the animal inside or outside the competition arena and/or evidence that an act of abuse has occurred will result in disqualification. This includes lameness and/or fresh blood, disrespect or misconduct by exhibitor. Can more than one person ride the same horse? Yes, but the same horse cannot be ridden in the same class with different riders. In order to be eligible for awards for each class, the equine must be shown by the same rider all three days.

NATURE OF RIDING HORSES No horse is a completely safe horse. Horses are 5 to 15 times larger, 20 to 40 times more powerful, and 3 to 4 times faster than a human. If a rider falls from horse to ground it will generally be at a distance of from 3 ½ to 5 ½ feet, and the impact may result in injury to the rider. Horseback riding/horse driving is the only sport where one much smaller, weaker predator animal, the human, tries to control and become one unit of movement with another much larger, stronger prey animal, the horse, with each having a limited understanding of the other. If a horse is frightened or provoked it may divert from its training and act according to its natural survival instincts which may include, but are not limited to stopping short, changing direction or speed at will; shifting its weight from side to side, bucking, rearing, biting, kicking, or running from danger. E. RIDER RESPONSIBILITY Upon mounting a horse and taking up the reins the RIDER is in primary control of the horse.
