4 Open Mornings The Northern Racing College holds Open Mornings every month (except December). They provide young people, their parents, guardians, carers and career advisors with the opportunity to have a look around the College and to meet the learners, who are currently on the foundation course. It starts with a riding demonstration on the gallops (weather permitting) at 10.00am, a tour around the yards, the chance to have a go on our horse simulators and finishes around 1pm after a question and answer session. The majority of the Open Morning takes place outside so please wear clothing and footwear suitable for the weather conditions.

6 Career Paths When you think of the horseracing industry, what thoughts enter your mind? Perhaps you think about jockeys, trainers and the staff in the racing yards. You might think about the stud hands and grooms and the stallion handlers. Have you thought about all the other more obscure positions, which make horseracing the tenth largest employer in the UK. When raceday comes, millions of people across the world are watching the spectacle. Horseracing is an international sport and is the second largest spectator sport in the UK. For the 100,000 people who work in the British horseracing industry, it s the culmination of years of preparation. From bookmakers to journalists, chefs to jockeys, racecourse managers to trainers, the roles and the career opportunities are endless. Ex-learners: where are they now? David Allan: professional flat jockey, Dominic Elsworth: Cheltenham Festival winning jockey: Hayley Turner: Britain s most successful female jockey, Callum Rodriguez, Connor Beasley, Jacob Butterfield, Luke Leadbitter and Lewis Edmunds are just a few of our jockeys doing exceptionally well. Jonathan Bryan: bloodstock agent, Jessica Lamb: Racing Post journalist, Samantha Whitehead: racing secretary to Ralph Beckett, David Trow: Emirates stalls handler. These are just a handful of our ex learners who are enjoying successful careers in the racing industry. 9 Residential Foundation Course Level 1 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care The Northern Racing College offers a variety of specialist training courses, all of which are designed to meet the needs of the racing industry. For those people seeking their first taste of racing, our Foundation Course which is offered as a riding or non riding course will ensure they have the necessary skills to gain employment in the racing industry, and for existing racing staff emphasis is placed on ensuring they receive the advice and develop the practical knowledge and experience to gain promotion within their chosen field. For the riding course this 18 week, residential foundation course consists of 12 weeks at the NRC and 6 weeks work experience placement. It has been designed to ensure learners are competent both on the ground working with horses and also whilst riding a thoroughbred horse at exercise. Learners will receive lectures and demonstrations and will work to a routine similar to a racing stable whilst at the NRC and then complete 6 weeks work experience in a yard. The aim of this course is to prepare learners for work in a racing stable. Learners will gain a Level 1 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care, Functional Skills qualifications, Emergency First Aid Certificate, L3 Award in the principles of transporting horses by road on short journeys, L1 Award introduction to horse racing industry, life skills including cooking, nutrition, fitness, looking after your money and talks from speakers from NARS and Racing Welfare. In addition learners also improve their self esteem, independence, self confidence and resilience. No previous equine experience or academic qualifications are required to enrol. Applicants must not weigh more than 11 stone ready to ride (i.e. wearing skullcap, body protector and boots). All the necessary equipment can be provided through the on site shop. Body protectors are provided for the duration of the foundation course. Upon successful completion of the course suitable learners, with the right aptitude, will be secured permanent, full time employment in a UK racing yard, where they will become a member of the stable staff team. Tuition is free for EU/EEA residents. Accommodation and meals for the first 12 weeks are provided in our residential centre at a one off cost of 350 which must be paid in full before commencing the course. If the family income is less than 23,000 learners are eligible to apply for a bursary of 300 towards their residential fees, specifically subsistence and meals. They will still have to pay 50. A 50 deposit/bond is required upon enrolment for accommodation; once the rooms are checked on graduation the deposit/ bond will be returned in the event that there is no damage.

15 Other Courses Assistant Trainers Course The Assistant Trainers course is a three-day course reflecting the importance of the role within stables and on the racecourse. The course is also suitable for head grooms and pupil assistants. The course covers aspects of staff management, handicapping, media training, health and safety, Racing Welfare, BHA s licensing and security functions, Weatherbys operations and the rules of racing. Trainers Course The Trainers course consists of three modules, which each take place over four/five days. They are a mandatory part of the criteria for a licence to train, as set by the British Horseracing Authority licensing committee but do not confer automatic right to a licence. The two-day course provides a thorough grounding and allows candidates the opportunity to talk directly with key personnel from organisations such as Weatherbys, the National Trainers Federation, the British Horseracing Authority and the International Racing Bureau.
