Cross tying in barns is allowed. 2. Stall renters must keep area in front of their stalls clear. 3. Equines should not be left in wash rack unattended. 4. Carriage horses may be harnessed in stall or in aisle, but must be put to or hitched outdoors. 5. A groom or helper should be available to keep the area clear of pedestrian traffic while equine is being groomed, washed, saddled or harnessed. 6. Equines should remain in stalls assigned unless cleared with Show Manager. 7. Carriage horses must always wear a bridle and bit while hitched to a carriage. 8. It is suggested that carriage driving Youths, 14 and under, wear fastened safety headgear while driving equines in warm up area, arena and in between. 9. Warm up areas can be dangerous if everyone is going in one direction and someone decides to go the opposite direction. Someone needs to designate when to reverse direction. 10. Be available and ready to enter the arena when your class is called. 11. Carriage show team members will make safety inspections each show morning. They are helpful and knowledgeable in making equipment decisions. 12. Keep in mind that carriage horses are not usually familiar with cattle, bucking horses, shooting, large crowds milling around, balloons, 4 wheelers, whips in their faces, loud noises, flags, etc. 13. Also, saddle horses have been known to run backwards at the sight of a carriage. 14. When carriage horses are in the show arena and the judge calls for Reverse Direction or Change of Rein, it is safest to drive a diagonal cut across the arena rather than a circle. 15. The judge and/or Show Manager or Superintendent have the right to make changes in the schedule, patterns or arena dimensions for the sake of safety.

6 CARRIAGE DRIVING CLASS DESCRIPTIONS AND RULES American Driving Society (ADS) Class Specifications and Articles Used as a Reference Safety and Inspections before classes begin in the morning Whips must be carried by drivers in hand while in arena for all Classes Pleasure Driving (Classes 801, 802, 803, 807, 808, 814) Standard performance includes the following gaits: Walk, Slow Trot, Working Trot, Strong Trot, to include: Halt, Reinback. The judge may ask these gaits to be performed both directions. Divisions are based on approximate equine sizes. The judge reserves the right to combine classes. At the conclusion of the class, all entries will line up facing the judge or ring steward. Horses are to stand quietly and reinback IF asked. If a groom is riding in the carriage, he/she may dismount and head the equine during the lineup. Grooms should remount the carriage before it moves out. Grooms are optional for single horse vehicles; mandatory for pairs. A driving whip must be carried by the driver at all times. Whip length should reach to the shoulder of the equine. Dropping the whip or placing in whip holder is not permitted. Lap robes/aprons, hats and gloves are appropriate for all pleasure classes. Buy a new hat. Match your apron. Pleasure Turn Out (Classes 804, 805, 806) Please refer to the above Pleasure Driving description. However, note that Turn Out places more emphasis on the overall suitability and appearance of carriage and harness to the equine than a Pleasure Class. Both the driver/whip and groom should dress to present a visually pleasing harmony with the horse and carriage. Neatness and condition of harness, carriage and dress are judged. Picnic Pleasure Country Drive (Class 807) This is an Open Class with no divisions. It is a popular ADS class. However, there is no actual drive in the country. It is conducted in the arena. Dress here can imitate a more festive air. Think summer colors, bright overskirt, matching hat, shawl, umbrella basket, PICNIC BASKET, ETC. Period or historical clothing can be worn. Each entry should have an actual picnic basket to be opened and judged during the lineup. Baskets should be fastened to the carriage to avoid spills but easily opened. REAL FOOD IS AN OPTION FOR YOU TO DECIDE. Whip must be carried in the arena. Costume Driving Novelty Class (Class 808) Open to all Equine and Drivers. This class is conducted as a Pleasure Class on the rail. Entries are encouraged to be creative. If groom accompanies driver, he/she is encouraged to dress up also. Turnout will be judged on creativity, novelty and humor. Lap robes/aprons are optional. Whip must be carried while in the arena. For fun, Google: Walnut Hill Costume Class Double Jeopardy Times Obstacle Class (Class 809) Open to all Equine and Drivers. One at a time in the arena. Start and finish line are the same. Time starts and ends by horse s nose. This is a timed event with a pattern of no more than 10 cone gates to be driven in numerical order. Course will be posted and may be walked prior to class. It takes two drivers to compete. First driver completes gates one through ten, then brings the carriage to a complete stop at a designated spot and hands the reins to the second driver. A 20 second penalty if the carriage is not brought to a complete stop. The second driver completes the course in reverse order to cross the finish line. Entries will re-enter arena for lineup. There is a 5 second penalty for running over a cone. NO CANTERING. HELMETS RECOMMENDED. Gambler s Choice Obstacle Class (Class 810) Open to all Equine and Drivers. One turnout at a time in the arena. Start and finish line are the same. Time starts and ends by the horse s nose. Maximum of 10 obstacles. Course will be posted and may be walked prior to class. Obstacles may be completed in any order from either direction. Obstacles may be driven twice only; but not in succession. Running over a cone or dislodging an obstacle; points for that obstacle cannot be counted or driven again. A signal will denote time is over and driver should head to the finish. If entry is in an obstacle when the bell rings, that obstacle cannot be counted. Entries will re-enter arena for lineup. NO CANTERING. HELMETS RECOMMENDED. WHIPS MUST BE IN HAND.

7 CARRIAGE DRIVING CLASS DESCRIPTIONS AND RULES American Driving Society (ADS) Class Specifications and Articles Used as a Reference Safety and Equipment Inspections are held in the morning before the first class. Late arriving entries will need to be inspected before entering arena for the first time. Whips must be carried by driver in hand while in arena for all classes. Reinsmanship Dressage / Type Pattern (Classes 811, 812, 813) Three divisions: Ladies, Gents and Youth. NO RAIL WORK. This class is open to all equine. Class is an abbreviated 2-3 minute pattern. Pattern will be posted. Same pattern for all divisions. Entry will be judged on correct completion of the pattern and quality of communication between the driver and horse. Pattern will include: Working Walk, Slow Trot, Working Trot, Strong Trot, Halt, Reinback and Stand Quietly while driver salutes the judge. Transitions should be smooth but obvious and at correct marker in the arena. Turnout should include: hat, gloves, apron and whip. Carriage and harness should look sharp. Marathon carriages are allowed. All wheel types are allowed except wire bicycle wheels, which are allowed for VSE s and ponies only. All entries for all three divisions will re-enter the arena together for lineup facing the judge and/or ring steward. Breaks to the Canter will be penalized. Novelty Pleasure / Stuffed Animal to Ride (Class 814) Open to all equine. We wanted to include a Carriage Dog Class, but rules are NO DOGS. So pick your favorite stuffed animal; tie him on the seat or on the groom s stand. Feel free to accessorize your animal and yourself. This should be a fun, no stress class. This is a pleasure type class so all entries will be on the rail at the same time. The judge will call for different gaits to be performed in both directions in the arena. NO CANTERING. LAP ROBES/APRONS NOT NEEDED. Scurry Cones Timed Obstacle Pattern Class (Class 815) Scurry Cones is a timed obstacle class that is open to all equine. Start and finish line are the same. Time starts and ends by the horse s nose. Only one entry at a time in the arena; gate must be clear before the next horse enters. There will be no more than 10 sets of cone gates to be driven in numerical order. Scurry cones will have tennis balls atop them (red ball on right), dislodged ball will accrue a 5 second penalty per ball. These 5 second penalties will be added to the driver s total time. The fastest time wins. The course will be posted and entrants may walk the course prior to the class. Entries will re-enter the arena. CANTERING IS NOT ALLOWED. HELMETS ARE RECOMMENDED. LAP ROBES NOT NEEDED. WHIPS MUST BE IN HAND. Cones Weaving Timed Obstacle Pattern (Class 816) This class is similar to a 4-H Pole Bending event. Six cones with tennis balls atop them will be placed in a straight line spaced 30 feet apart. Pattern will be posted. Only one entry at a time in the arena; gate must be clear before next horse enters. Entries must trot up one side of the cones (left or right), weave the cones both up and down in a serpentine pattern and then trot back across the finish line on the opposite side the vehicle came up. Start and finish line are the same line. Time starts and ends by the horse s nose. Knocking a ball off a cone is a 5 second penalty. Bumping a cone is not a penalty. Running over a cone is a 5 second penalty. Fastest horse wins. CANTERING IS NOT ALLOWED. HELMETS ARE RECOMMENDED. LAP ROBES NOT NEEDED. WHIPS MUST BE IN HAND. SHOW RESULTS Please check show results at Check our website for directions and a map of the State Fair. This concludes the 2015 Nebraska State Fair Carriage Driving Show. We want to thank all of our exhibitors for helping to make The Nebraska State Fair such a success. We also wish all of our exhibitors a safe trip home. See you next year!
