8 NSF Caribou Project The goal of this project is to understand the traits of the landscape that control caribou foraging behavior and landscape use patterns. We will collect vegetation samples throughout the home range of the Central Arctic Caribou herd during calving, peak forage growth, fall migration and during winter over multiple years and measure the chemical traits of the plants, that we believe influences their foraging patterns. We have randomly assigned plot locations and we will helicopter into sites with our base of operations being the Toolik Lake Field Station. We will also be using the Dalton Highway as a sampling platform as well when possible. During our summer sampling periods (mid-june, mid-july, late September and in late March/early April) we will harvest plants in 3, 1 m 2 plots that are within a 100 yard radius of the GPS locations. In 25% of our locations we will insert a nickel-size IButton temperature sensors that will be marked with a 12 inch tall, ½ inch diameter PVC tube. These sensors will be retrieved the following year so that we have an estimate of annual soil temperature traits. Once each summer-july-we will insert and pull out, a 1-inch tube into each plot that is 30 inches long to collect a soil core. This soil core will be used to measure soil C and N contents. Our winter sampling trips collecting vegetation above the snow, will also include several snow traits that are of value to the oil and gas industry. We will be measuring snow depth, snow hardness, soil temperatures and will collect snow samples for black carbon and water isotopes. The snow physical properties will be used in a spatial model to depict the depth, hardness and snow cover properties all across the CAH home range. These maps will be made available to our DNR and industry partners.
