I m delighted that our membership will have a new exciting and interactive site to learn about education and current events at a touch of a button! said Lynette. The committee recommended Standing Stone Media for the $13,500 project which is expected to be ready for launch in three to four months. The redesign committee, comprised of Webmaster Lynette McMoran, Finance Committee Chairperson Gary Maholic, Membership Chairperson Diane Engler, Vice- President Debbie DelGiorno and President Susan Lax, has met for about a year to determine what the needs of the membership are, what kinds of features the site should include, and what vendor should be hired. The committee requested bids on its specifications from interested vendors, narrowed the focus to three bids, and then reviewed the proposals and participated in the demonstrations of those vendors. The web site will include a calendar of events that offers click-on information and pages with information about the various ESDCTA opportunities, such as Dressage, Eventing, Youth, competitions and educational programming. The committee took a year to carefully make its recommendation, according to Susan. We felt that slow and steady wins the race, she said. We wanted to make sure that the site was as state-of-the-art as financially possible, with all the amenities that will engage both members and non-members. There was a lot to learn about web sites and we did not want to rush into something that we are hoping will be around for a very long time. The committee chose Standing Stone to ensure that the web site could evolve as time went on, incorporating new and innovative features as they are developed, rather than reinventing the wheel every couple of years, according to Susan. The site also will include a members-only area as well as a mechanism for people to apply or renew for membership. The committee is hoping that people will also be able to register for competitions and programs and other activities, services, and products.

Follow us on PRESIDENT S MESSAGE It seems like ESDCTA has been on a roll of activity that is bringing so much to our members. I cannot believe that our committee members have worked so hard in the past few months, accomplishing so much and I am so proud to be working alongside of them. Some of the roads traveled have been a short path to success while others have been long and arduous, but all have been well worth the journey. First, I have to compliment the Dressage committee for putting together what seemed the absolute best Memorial Day weekend Dressage show and CDI*3. The amount of work that went into this great event was obvious the entire weekend. I cannot say enough but you will read all about it in the July issue. While coordinating the show with her committee members, Terry Masters also commandeered the arena improvements at the Horse Park of New Jersey. This came about as a result of ESDCTA s commitment to having the best competitions possible and the board approving a $25,000 donation to the Horse Park s capital campaign for the improvements. An added bonus to making the arenas better for our competitors was the dedication of the east arena in memory of Lazelle Knocke, a founder of both ESDCTA and USDF. The work that Terry put into this improvement cannot be measured. In addition to working closely with the Horse Park board to determine how the arena improvements needed to be made while finding a reasonable donation level that matched our wish for improved footing, Terry was at the Horse Park every day with the contractors who worked on the arena. She made sure the specifications were followed and the improvements were in keeping with both organizations expectations. Terry is an example of how ESDCTA volunteers show up. They don t just give a little, they give whatever it takes. They don t do one part of a job, they follow through. The new web site featured on the front page of this issue is another example of what has been accomplished in recent months and how much time and effort our volunteers put into any given project. We are looking forward to the new site being launched by September in time for membership renewal if all the ducks can be in a row and the i s dotted and t s crossed. ESDCTA s commitment to education is more than just a commitment: it is our mission! While we have have been without a permanent Education Chairperson for a bit, Tammy Purdy has stepped up to take on this role and has already started to reach out to members to find out what they would like to see in programming. In the meantime, Melissa Pribic has been active getting us programs in conjunction with Skylands Saddlery, and I would be remiss if I did not sing out praises for her work, as well as Skylands. We have had an incredible array of seminars as a result of her efforts, including having Apassionata as an educational component of our MDW show and the offer for reduced tickets for our members at their New Jersey and Maryland shows. Debbie DelGiorno has once again brought Dressage with the Experts to the MDW show and we thank her for this great program that enables visitors to learn what Dressage is as they watch the competitors. Lauren Sprieser, filled in at the very last minute to be the DWTE narrator. Thank you Lauren! Everyone gained valuable knowledge from your insight. Giving as they do can be exhausting for many of our volunteers but the exhilaration and energy generated has been, I hope their reward. Do remember to say thanks when you see any volunteer, as each and every one makes membership in our club an exciting experience. As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. John Fitzgerald Kennedy (American 35th US President ( ), ) Susan and Chevy

5 VOLUME 2 ISSUE 6 - JUNE 2012 COLLECTIVE REMARKS PAGE 5 FOALIN AROUND Youth News, Activities, and Opportunities Youth Fix-A-Test Was Fun By Jessica Kuc On May 5, one of this year s three Youth Fix-A-Test Clinics was held at Hidden Creek Equestrian Center with clinician Kelly Smaltz ( L ). Six of our youth members participated along with two adult amateurs. Each rider completed a test in front of Kelly before getting a half-hour lesson and the chance to ride the test again with their new feedback in mind. The riders also got the educational opportunity to attend a lunch with Kelly in which she discussed what she looks for when judging. Six-year-old Allison Roecker started off the day on her pony Nemo, riding Intro A and B; the clinic was her first event as an ESDCTA member. Kelly helped her to better control her feisty little pony by developing a power position with her shoulders back and heels down. Kelly gave her exercises to work on in lessons to keep up her power position. Kelly also worked on developing a more effective position with members, Daniella Corrente and Haley Schierwagen, both riding Starlight in the clinic at Training 1 and First 3, respectively. Both riders scores went up multiple percentage points when they rode their tests the second time. Melodie Higgins and youth rider, Grace Schierwagen, also saw major improvements in their scores at Training 2 and First 1; both went up five points after their lessons! Becky Kuc used the clinic to debut Training 3 on her four-year-old gelding, Harley, and Jessie Kuc and Thunder participated to improve their Beginner Novice A for a Combined Test the following day. Kelly helped both riders develop a steadier connection in their horses which lead to much better second tests; both girls saw a four percentage point increase to a 66% (or the eventing equivalent!) after just a half-hour of work. Alexandra Bielinski, another new ESDCTA youth member, audited and participated in the clinic at Training 1. She and her horse Zip impressed fellow riders and auditors by earning a 70% in their very first test together! Still, Kelly was able to find room for improvement, particularly in Alexandra s position, that raised her score to a 72%! Every rider came out of the ring extremely happy with the feedback and help they received from Kelly, who donated her time and expertise. Many of the youth participants audited the clinic when they weren t riding in order to learn from their fellow riders and earn credits towards their Youth Educational Award. A big thank you goes out to Kelly Smaltz and the host stable, Hidden Creek Equestrian Center, for giving our members such a wonderful opportunity.

6 VOLUME 2 ISSUE 6 - JUNE 2012 COLLECTIVE REMARKS PAGE 6 HORSE TREATS By Meredith Rogers Region 1 Adult Team Competition held in conjunction with Our youth members probably look forward to another birthday because it means another day closer to leaving for college or being able to drive. But for many of us, another birthday just means more aches and pains. However, even those of us with more candles on our cake than we want to count should not despair because there are riders who have done amazing things well into their senior years. Take Hilda Lorna Johnstone, the oldest female Olympian, who at 70 years of age competed as part of the British Equestrian team at the 1972 Olympics. She also competed in the 1956 and the 1968 Olympic Games, where at age 66, she helped Great Britain claim 5th place in the Mixed Dressage Team event. In the 1956 Olympics her teammate, Lilian Williams was 61 years old. Ms. Johnstone continued to compete in dressage into her eighties, and died at the age of 87 years. They are an inspiration to all of us to continue pursuing our passion with horses as long as we are able. This year there will be another septuagenarian riding in the Olympics. Hiroshi Hoketsu, 71 years old, qualified for the London games to represent Japan. He competed at the Beijing Olympics at age 67! They are an inspiration to all of us to continue pursuing our passion with horses as long as we are able. Potomac Valley Dressage Association Summer Showdown July 7-8, 2012 Level 1 Recognized Dressage Show Prince George s Equestrian Center, Upper Marlboro, MD Show is open NOW! Closing Date: June 15, 2012 Don t Get Left Out!! get your teams together & entries submitted For entry information & prize list: ESDCTA Members interested in participating should contact Cindy Anderson at cindya@bluebridle.com Psychology Puts the Success into Your Show Season Once again, Psychologist Scottie Reeves has brought her expertise to Skyland Saddlery and ESDCTA s Seminar Series to teach us how to overcome fears and mental blocks thwarting our success with our horses. Scottie started the series by having the participants share their stumbling blocks to success. Each participant was then asked to devise a game plan. The subsequent seminar focused on what they had accomplished and learned with their horses as a result of those plans. Scottie advised that determining one s SMART goals Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time bound makes the challenges more easily overcome and gives the rider a focus that leads them, step by step, to the fruition of their goals. Scottie gave her first seminar last year. It was so successful that members asked for a more in-depth series. A joint program offered by Skylands Saddlery and ESDCTA, the series is held at the tack shop located on Route 202 in Ringoes, NJ. ESDCTA education programs will continue in July with a webinar offered by Sarah Ralston, PhD. Stay tuned for more information coming your way via ESDCTA s newsletter, web site, Facebook page and blasts. From left to right, Scottie Reeves, Melissa Pribic

9 VOLUME 2 ISSUE 6 - JUNE 2012 COLLECTIVE REMARKS PAGE 9 THE START BOX Eventing News ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL JERSEY FRESH INTERNATIONAL THREE-DAY EVENT By: Dr. Carey Williams The week of May 7 was a very busy week for many, including myself. The Jersey Fresh International Three-Day Event took place at the Horse Park of New Jersey in Allentown, NJ. The competition itself spanned four days, with Thursday (May 10) and Friday as the two days of dressage, Saturday was cross-country jumping and Sunday was show jumping and the awards ceremony. However, the entire week prior was used for course set up and design, so many hands were needed during the non-competition days, as well. Some of these preparatory jobs included painting jumps, decorating them with straw, mulch, flowers, and other festive things, putting up sponsor banners, roping and staking for the cross-country course, not to mention all the preparation for the dressage and stadium jumping phases. Many of the Rutgers Undergraduate students and even postgraduates attended the event by volunteering for some of the previously mentioned jobs, as well as jobs during the event, such as taking horses pulse and respiration in the vet box after cross-country and helping check in riders prior to both veterinary inspections. The students not only gained experience learning what kind of preparation goes into such a high caliber event, but they also get to network with the vendors, sponsors, veterinarians, organizers, and riders. for all divisions. There were a few falls at the water complex, which is where I was the area steward, and a few falls elsewhere on course, but everyone, including the horses are all okay. One horse, Will Coleman s Zipp, did end up going to the NJ Equine Clinic with a laceration to the hind leg after hitting a flag, but it is nice to say that he will be just fine. Stadium jumping day on Sunday gave us more great weather and some thrilling finishes. The CCI3* finished with Phillip Dutton on Mystery Whisper in first and Michael Pollard on Jude s Law in second. CIC3* finished with Rebecca Howard (CAN) on Riddle Master in first and local rider, Sinead Halpin, on Manoir do Carneville in second. While in the 2* CCI division Boyd Martin riding Crackerjack was in first and Kelley Williams riding Brazen Bomber came in second. More excitingly for me however, was Wendy Lewis, my trainer and ESDCTA member, riding Mastercraft who placed 5th, which was up from 17th after dressage. Way to go Wendy! Finally, the CIC2* division finished up with Karen O Connor taking both first and second place on her previous Olympic partner, Mandiba (who was coming back after an injury) and RF Amber Eyes, respectively. All in all it was one of the best Jersey Fresh years yet! If you missed it this year, be sure to put it on your calendar for next year! This year s event was particularly important because this competition was being used as one of the selection trials for the London Summer Olympics for the USA s Eventing Team. So there were many really outstanding horses and riders including Phillip Dutton, Karen O Connor, and Boyd Martin, just to name a few riders, and some Olympic hopeful horses including Manoir de Carnville, Neville Bardos, and BallyNoe Castle RM for the US and Exponential, Riddle Master, and Gin N Juice from Canada. Cross-country day turned out to be one of the most spectacular Jersey Fresh cross-country days ever (and I have only missed one of them). The weather was perfect, as was the footing. The little bit of rain on the days prior made everything just soft enough, but not slippery. The course was tough but not too tough Jaynelle Tenor manned the registration table at the ESDCTA Cross Country Schooling held concurrently with the MDW Dressage Show.

10 VOLUME 2 ISSUE 6 - JUNE 2012 COLLECTIVE REMARKS PAGE 10 SALUTE... By: Rebecca Kuc Christy will be beginning her senior year of high school in Fall 2012 at Hunterdon Central Regional High School. Aside from school and riding, Christy enjoys going to bonfires with her friends and figure skating. She also enjoys supporting her brothers at their ice hockey games, and is determined to teach herself acoustic guitar this year! Christy has been riding for thirteen years and has been training with Carol Blackman for the past ten years at Toy Box Farm in Ringoes, New Jersey. When Christy was six, she got her first pony with whom she did hunter paces. After doing that for a while, Christy saw the Rolex Three-Day Event on television and was completely hooked, and had to do it. Shortly after, her mother signed her up for lessons with Carol, and at age eight, Christy and her 21 year-old pony completed their first event! Christy has been riding on ESDCTA s Youth Team since 2005, at the Region 1 Youth Competition, Lendon s Youth Dressage Festival, and the Eventing Team Competition in Christy plans to compete at Lendon s Youth Dressage Festival again this year on one of her horses and compete on the Eventing Team Competition at Stuart with her other horse. Christy states, I can honestly say my favorite year was my first year at Morven Park for the Regional Championships, with Jessie and Becky! It was everyone s first time and it was an all-around fun and exciting new experience! Christy also shares that her favorite part of being on the Youth Teams is the fun and exciting experience of meeting new people and riding besides old friends! Christy would like to thank everyone on the teams, and those supporting them, for making every year a great time and for giving her generation of equestrians these wonderful chances at showing the horse world what we have. She d also like to thank the kids she s ridden with for being such amazing and professional people! Currently, Christy owns two horses. Christmas Eve, Eve, is a 9 year-old Holsteiner/Oldenburg mare. Christy has been riding Eve since June 2010 and has had the pleasure of bringing her up the levels in both Dressage and Eventing. Stornoway Bay, Apollo, is a 6 year-old Thoroughbred who has only been under saddle since September She s gotten the opportunity to basically train him herself and she calls both of her horses her Dream Team. Eventing is Christy s passion and she s been hooked ever since her first time out cross-country. She loves the rush you get in the start box and the focus and intensity of the ride throughout the open terrain. However, Christy also feels that Dressage is the most important phase of eventing, and everyone should try to master it. Christy really enjoys Dressage and relates it to math, Dressage is like math, you may hate it and try your best to avoid ever doing it, but anything you do in the saddle requires the basics of Dressage. Dressage will follow you everywhere. Christy hopes to continue in Dressage as well as hopefully qualify for the American Eventing Championships and eventually compete at the North American Horse Trials. In 2011, Christy and Eve completed their first three-day event! Also in 2011, Christy won DVHA s First Level Dressage Champion with her old horse, Mr. Whiskers. Christy has also won many ESDCTA Year End Awards over the years and most recently was awarded the ESDCTA Good Sportsmanship Award. Christy was completely blown away by receiving this award and was speechless when she received it after speaking at the 2011 Banquet about her experience. Christy said it was very nerve raking to stand and speak in front of everyone, however, she hopes that her helmet and brain safety message came across to people. She is very thankful for this award and for all the support of everyone when she was recovering from a riding accident. Everyone was so patient with me when I had trouble remembering things. But thank you mom and dad for helping me get back in the saddle! CHRISTY PELLEGRINO
